Persuasive Writing = Donated Books!

Published by treagan under News from Mrs. Reagan

Shelfari: Book reviews on your book blog

Mrs. Molly Guikema, one of our HHS teachers, designed a writing project with a community purpose for her English II-A students.  At the conclusion of their unit of study related to characteristics of an American hero, Mrs. Guikema asked her English students to write a persuasive letter to children’s book publishers.  The intent of the letter to solicit book donations to help build school library collections for their local elementary schools. Five of the students chose to donate the books they received to our school library.

Many thanks to: Jon Igo, Britney Bekken, Alex Slager, Christy Bectel, Nicole Huitsing…and Mrs. Guikema! You can view the donate books on our shelf above…and in our school library!

What We Want for Your Children

Published by treagan under News from Mrs. Reagan

On Sunday nights, I unwind by writing thank you notes (real ones..with paper and pen) and searching my favorite teacher blog sites for inspiration. This evening, I stumbled upon a poignant video that I believe expresses the goals you have as parents and the goals we, at Georgetown, have for teaching your children. Parenting and teaching are incredible and rewarding endeavors — and sometimes they can be challenging, too. Please help us to know what we can do to make improvements in our learning climate for all children–especially yours!

Thank you for sharing your hearts with us. Mrs. Reagan

Blog Spotlight

Published by treagan under News from Mrs. Reagan

If you haven’t had time to visit the specialist blogs, I would like to recommend a quick visit sometime this week!  Each specialist has a blog that includes details about curriculum and events in art, music and PE (Physical Wellness).

Currently, our PE teachers (Mrs. Neinhuis and Mrs. VanKoevering) are selling PE Cares apparel.

Mrs. Brouwer, our art teacher, features the work of our talented artists each week–in addition to showcasing some of the work that will be displayed at our district wide art show this spring.

And, Mrs. Bretz, our music teacher, updates her blog with student features and curriculum highlights.

Kindergarten Readiness Program

Published by treagan under K 2009-10

2009/2010:   HPS Kindergarten Readiness Program

Research shows that most children who turn five by December 1 are ready for kindergarten. As a district, Hudsonville Public Schools has many supports in place to ensure that students will be highly successful in school. As an initial step, screening will be conducted in March for children whose birthdays fall between June 1 and December 1. Following the screening, teachers will meet with parents to inform them of their child’s strengths as well as to define readiness areas that can be developed during the months
leading up to kindergarten.
If however, after the screening parents still feel that their “young five” child is not ready to attend kindergarten in the fall, Hudsonville Public Schools will be offering a tuition-based, Kindergarten Readiness Program, on two full days per week located at one or two of our elementary buildings (depending upon enrollment). The Kindergarten Readiness Program will focus on fun, hands-on learning, incorporating Zoo-Phonics, Handwriting Without Tears, and math/literacy skills essential for future school success.

To find out more, view the attached document. K-readiness-program
