Health Education Update

From our Curriculum Office:

In compliance with Michigan law, the HPS Sex Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) has approved a program of instruction for teaching students about blood borne illnesses including HIV/AIDS. Lessons specific to HIV/AIDS are taught as part of a comprehensive K – 12 health curriculum.  We have recently updated the 5th grade heath curriculum to include a lesson on blood borne illnesses to align with the Michigan standards.

According to Michigan law, public review of new or revised health curricula must be provided prior to formal board approval.  Therefore, we are making the new 5th grade HIV/AIDS lesson available for parent review until February 22.  Our next step will be to seek final board approval to include this lesson in our comprehensive health program.
