Week 7: October 9-13, 2017

What a wonderful first week in October!   As much as we need the rain, the weather was perfect for outdoor PE, recess and learning breaks.  October also means FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS.  Our local firefighters worked with our kindergarteners to learn the basics of fire safety, meet a firefighter dressed in all the gear and tour the fire truck.  Our fourth graders met with the team today to discuss the importance practicing for a fire exit as well as additional prevention and safety measures.

Many thanks to the Georgetown firefighters for working with our students every year to build awareness.  They are truly our community heroes!

Another big event this past week was an event called Hudsonville Instructional Rounds.  Administrators from throughout the district spent the day observing instruction in our classrooms.  As a school team we are working at reducing the amount of teacher talk time and increasing the amount of time students are engaged in the learning task.  Two texts serve as our resources for this work: Total Participation Techniques and Whole Brain Learning. We asked our colleagues to observe our work and give us feedback for how to improve our teaching practice.   Our students were AMAZING…and earned outstanding’s for demonstrating respectful behavior in the classrooms and hallways.

AND…A VERY BIG ANNOUNCEMENT:  Hudsonville Public Schools won the ART PRIZE YOUTH COLLABORATION AWARD.  This is a great tribute to our art teachers, students and community!

Looking ahead to next week, remember JET’s PIZZA on Thursday and EARLY RELEASE  Friday, October 13.
