Introducing our GVSU Statistics Winner: THALIA JACKSON

Each year, state-wide schools with students in grades 4-6  participate in the GVSU Statistic Contest.  Well over one hundred students participated and one of our students, Thalia Jackson received first place.  This is the second year in a row  a Georgetown student won FIRST PLACE … and on both occasions, the winners were girls.  This is important to note because statistically, boys perform better mathematically than girls in elementary and middle school.  At Georgetown, we focus on raising all learners to do well in all contents.

To enter the contest, each student must identify a data set to student.  This is focused around a question that requires researching data and examining patterns in the data that answer the question.   Thalia’s question:  “What are the Commonly Used Letters in Baby Names?”  Thalia researched and analyzed her data to create a poster visually demonstrating the commonly used letters in baby names.

On behalf of everyone at Georgetown, I extend my congratulations to Thalia who has demonstrated strong writing, reading, problem solving and team work ability throughout elementary.  Thalia is a person who listen to all members of her team, brings the team together to focus on the topic at hand and goes above and beyond to help the project come together at the highest level.   Thalia is going to continue to work hard and learn well throughout school.  I am excited to see how she impacts our world in her future years!

In addition to Thalia, we had two of our students receive honorable mentions for the GVSU competition.  This is the first time that our school has had three students selected.  Congratulation to Korbyn and Carson for their awards!

  • Carson Dykstra, Grade 5,  “Who’s the Best: Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James”
  • Korbyn Greer, Grade 5, “What is the Toughest College Football Conference”
