New In-District Transfer Policy

FROM THE ADMINISTRATION OFFICE…..

In-District Building Transfer Requests & Schools-of-Choice Hudsonville Public Schools will be considering In-District Building Transfer Requests and Schools-of-Choice Applications for all buildings (room permitting) for the 2010-2011 school year.

The following conditions apply:

  • The staffing and building facilities can accommodate the transfer.
  • Openings will be determined by grade level allowing open positions for move-in students.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Due to staffing, student transportation, or other considerations, the district may opt to deny a request.
  • In-district building transfers, once approved, will remain in effect unless a major shift in student population or redistricting occurs.
  • Schools-of-Choice (non-resident) students are required to apply annually.

Always Changing: 4th and 5th Grade Videos

Each spring, we are required to share information with our fourth and fifth grade students regarding Always Changingchanges in human development related to puberty.  These videos go through an extensive review process to make sure that the material is appropriate for the developmental age of the students and meet the state standards for our health curriculum.

The videos will be shown on April 1.  The students will be grouped as follows:

  • Fourth grade girls will view the video with Mrs. Boersma, Mrs. Jurewicz, and Mrs Reagan allowing time for Q & A following the viewing.
  • Fourth grade boys will view the video with Mr. Hahn and Mr. Gort, allowing time for Q & A following the viewing.
  • Fifth grade girls will view the video with fifth grade teachers, allowing time for Q & A following the viewing.
  • Fifth grade boys will view the video with Mr. Dalrymple and Mr. Kooiker,, allowing time for Q & A following the viewing.

If you would like to preview the videos, please visit the host P & G website which sponsors the curriculum.  At this location, you can examine the curriculum, view the video and also look for addition support if you would like to answer questions from your child at home.   As always, our preference is that all children feel comfortable talking with their parents about how their bodies are changing–and we will encourage them to talk with you if they have questions that cannot be addressed at school.

The website provides the answer to most questions that parents have regarding the videos.

If you DO NOT want your child to view the video with the grade level gender group,

please call or email your child’s teacher.

We will make arrangements for your child to be supervised in the office during the Always Changing curriculum program.

The Teenage Brain

Teen If you have  teenagers, I am sure you have found yourself wondering, “What were they thinking?”   Dr. Francis Jensen, a Harvard researcher,  shares information that helps parents to understand how adolescent brains think differently.

The research shared by Dr. Jensen will help parents to develop a sense of understanding about the why teens develop “sour moods” and make irrational decisions.  The article also gives parents hope for post-adolescent brain maturity!

RAISING A READER SCHOOL CHALLENGE

We have the incredible opportunity to win $5,000 for our school library through a contest called, Raise a Reader School Challenge. Individual readers are also eligible for great prizes.

The contest is sponsored by the International Reading Association and Parents Magazine.

As a school, we are participating in a national contest that requires students to log their reading minutes from March 8 to May 31. We would like to ask every parent to register for this program today. You will then log in your child’s minutes read at home. The winning school (most minutes read) will receive $5,000 toward library books.

Simply go to this link: RAISE A READER SCHOOL CHALLENGE

We developed a “how to register” checklist.  You can view it here:  Raising a Reader Directions

If you have questions at any time, check with Mrs. VandenBerg, our school librarian, or your child’s teacher.

Thank you for doing such a great job to raise your child to be a reader and for supporting our school library!

The Week Ahead-March 8, 2010

The second week in March brings PK/K Round Up, field trips for select classrooms and more mild weather!   The mild weather means many things to a school staff, including but not limited to the following:

  • Joy
  • Decrease in winter viruses
  • Increase in lost and found items

Our lost and found is overflowing with LOST items, and the onset of mild weather will mean that it will grow as students wear their jackets/sweatshirts outside for recess…and then peel them off while playing.   We will be donating left over winter items to a local agency the first week of April.  Please make sure you have your child check for any missing items before spring break arrives.

Finally, our annual talent show will be held on the Thursday before spring break!  If you have a 3rd-5th grader who is interested in participating, check out the GOT TALENT post.

Here’s a snap shot of the week ahead!

Mrs. Brouwer’s Gallery Showing

Mrs. Brouwer, our talented and nationally recognized art teacher, is showing her collage and fiber art at the Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven!  Her opening was this on Friday evening and several of us attended this very special event.

It is quite an honor and accomplishment to be selected for a gallery showing!  Mrs. Brouwer is very humble and does not like to be in the spot light, so the gallery event was forcing her to step outside of her comfort zone.

I must tell you, she looked beautiful and so did all of her pieces.  I snapped a few photos of the artist sharing her work as well as a one of my favorite fiber creations (Hope) and the decorative and functional wool covered soaps.  You can find out more about her work on her school art blog and her Valley View Farm Fiber blog.   If you visit her Valley View blog, you will see the sheep that share their wool…and contribute to some of her work!

It’s Maple Syrup Time!

While walking Cooper along Lake Michigan today, I stumbled upon a grove of maple trees that are being tapped for their sap.  Luckily, I had my camera along so I snapped some photos to post on my 365 project and share with all of you on the blog.

M is for Maple Syrup

The rise in temperatures this past week has caused the maple sap to run–and this typically lasts for a few weeks.  The best time to catch the sap is before the maple tree buds–causing the sap to become more bitter.  Blandord Nature Center kicked off it’s Sugarbush Trail Tours this weekend which take place through March 27, their annual Sugarbush Festival.  If you would like to learn more about the sugar bush and how maple syrup is made, visit the Michigan Maple Syrup Association.
