BLOG BITS 10/12/12

BLOG BITS 10/12/12………..  Happy Friday Georgetown Parents!!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……… It has been a fairly quiet week here at Georgetown.  The MEAP testing started on Tuesday and today we are just doing some make-up testing.  Next week we will be doing make-up testing on Monday and finishing up the other MEAP tests on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Let’s help get these kiddos off to a good start on these days!  Try to make sure they get a good night’s rest and start the day with a good breakfast too!  : )

ATTENDANCE………. Parents we are asking for some help on your end.  Attendance here is very important as we are trying to make sure all of our students are safe and accounted for.  We are just asking that if your student is going to be absent or even late that you call and notify the office.  By you calling your student in it saves us an enormous amount of time in the morning because we do not have to ask the teacher if they have heard from the student/parents and we do not have to make phone calls home to check in.  With 615 students here at Georgetown these extra steps for attendance can take a long time.  Our attendance line can be reached 24 hours a day so you are welcome to call at anytime and leave us a message.  Thank you  : )

NOTES FOR AFTER SCHOOL CHANGES……….  Please, Please, Please try to remember to send a note with your student if there will be an after school change in transportation or where your student will be going at the end of the day.  We are receiving a high volume of changes on a daily basis and that therefor means a LOT of interruptions to the classrooms!  : (  Not only does it mean interruptions, but it is hard for the teachers to remember all these changes without a handwritten note as a reminder.  Most of the teachers like to post the notes by their doors/bus schedules so they have a reminder as to all of the changes for the end of the day.  Thank you so very much for your consideration in this matter.

SCHOOL PICTURES………..   We have been receiving many phone calls as to when pictures will arrive.  We spoke with Geskus yesterday and they informed us that they should be in by the end of next week.  We will do our very best when they  come in to get them out ASAP to the students.  So look for them by the end of next week.  : )  Another little reminder, if you ordered a yearbook, these WILL NOT come until the spring sometime.  Picture RE-TAKES will be held on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30. Remember to send in your picture packet that you already received if you would like re-takes.  If your child was absent on picture day this will be your opportunity to have their photos taken.

SCHOOL CALENDAR CORRECTIONS…….. Please see the following update that shows Calendar Corrections for the district.  A couple of the dates do affect Georgetown!!

BLOG BITS 10/5/12………  HAPPY FRIDAY GEORGETOWN PARENTS!!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE………   We had another good week here at school.  Almost seems like we never left, everyone seems to know exactly what they are supposed to be doing : )  A little note from the Administration Building……..  we as a district raised a little over $4000 at our HEF Fun Fest last Friday night before the Varsity Homecoming game!  Way to go Hudsonville!!  With this money teachers are able to apply for mini-grants for items/programs that they feel will benefit the students.

One more thing……. as much as I do NOT like having to tell all of you this…… we have been seeing a fair amount of students with the stomach virus already.  So be aware of this and make sure to remind your child to be washing their hands regularly.  As a reminder we like students to be fever free and not having any stomach symptoms for 24 hours before they return to school.

If anyone would be willing to donate Clorox/Lysol wipes to the office that would be greatly appreciated!  We go through a lot of these as we wipe down a number of things in the health room and phoneswhen the students are sick.

SCHOOL CALENDAR CORRECTIONS…….. Please see the following update that shows Calendar Corrections for the district.  A couple of the dates do affect Georgetown!!   LIBRARY NEWS………   We have enrolled Georgetown Elementary in the Double JJ Resort Reading Program.  This program is used in conjunction with the Pizza Hut Book It Reading Program.  When your student’s monthly reading goals have been met they will turn in their reading calendar for the Pizza Hut Book It program to their teacher.  In return, they will receive their free pizza coupon to Pizza Hut and a certificate to Double JJ Resort for either One Gold Rush Waterpark Day Pass or One Snow Tubing Hill Pass.  Georgetown understands the importance of reading and LOVES to reward our students anyway that we can.  If you have any questions, please direct them to Mrs. VandenBerg in the Library.

BLOG BITS 4/13/12

Happy Friday the 13th Georgetown Parents!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…… We are hoping that everyone had a great Spring Break.  Now we are all rejuvenated for the remainder of the school year!  With that being said, it is hard to believe we only have 8 WEEKS of school remaining.  Hold on tight because it will fly by!!  Just a couple of things directly from the office, OTC and prescription meds and snacks.  Medications….. MUST be brought to school by a PARENT, NOT a student!  We also have to have a medication form filled out in order to dispense these.  If it is a prescription med the form MUST be completed by a physician.  These forms are here in the office or you can find them online.  As far as snacks go we seem to be having a lot of students come down due to forgetting their snacks for morning break.  We do keep snacks in the office for special circumstances, however lately we have been flying through them due to students just forgetting.  We appreciate your help at home with this matter.  Thank you!

LUNCH INFORMATION……… Here is the April lunch menu and a new deposit slip if you need one.   April 2012 Hud Elem     Menu Deposit Slip

BIKES/RIPSTICKS/ETC…….  With spring along come bikes and ripsticks!  With that being said, PLEASE REMEMBER to send a note with your child to their teacher giving them permission to ride/walk/ripstick home.  Unless you have done so, the teacher will be required to send them home however they normally get home, such as the bus!  Thank you for your help in this matter  : )

SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT EVENTS…….  As many of you know, Spencer Meyer is a very special Kindergarten student here at Georgetown in Mrs. Estefan’s class and his parents, Jason and Jodi, are also staff members within the district.  Spencer is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and in March the family was informed that the cancer had returned in his spine.   The entire district is helping to raise money for the SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT FUND and we have a few things to let you know about.  These are great ways to help the family in this time of need!!

BENEFIT BASKETBALL GAME…….. will be held Friday, April 27 at 7:00pm at the High School.  This will be great night of fun for everyone!!  The game will be between the staff at Baldwin Middle and Riley Middle.  It will be the “Baldwin Street Ballers vs. Riley Street Rim-Rattlers”!  Doors will open at 6:30pm and entrance fees will be a VOLUNTARY DONATION to the Spencer Meyer Fundraiser!  Please come out and join us to show your support for the Meyer family!  Lots of fun things and the Eagle’s Landing will be selling $1.00 Squishees (slushees), there will be Jet’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s, pop and candy!  What could be better?!  So MARK your calendars for FRIDAY, APRIL 27!!

TEAM SPENCER….. Fliers for this event should have come  home with your YOUNGEST/AND OR ONLY STUDENT.  I am also attaching it here in the blog.   TEAM SPENCER kids sign up sheet 2  Please read the attached flier or the one sent home with your student for ALL of the details.  This will be a donation for the Spencer Meyer Benefit Fund through sponsorship of runners and individual donations.  There will be a form coming home through PE for FREE REGISTRATION for the children’s events!  You may also order t-shirts on this form. If you want to purchase a t-shirt PLEASE make the check PAYABLE to:  MICHELE SYTSMA.  T-shirt order forms are DUE APRIL 20th!!   Once again this is a great way to help out the Meyer Family!!  FYI….. if Georgetown has 100 students sign up to do this race our wonderful 4th grade teacher, Mr. Kooiker, has agreed to SHAVE his head!!! Let’s do this Georgetown!!!

COMMUNITY NEWS……..  MAY SCHOOL ELECTION………  On May 8 Hudsonville voters will be asked to approve the annual renewal of the 18 mill non-homestead property tax.  This is a tax on businesses and second homes, not on homestead residences or qualified agricultural property.  State Education Taxes  on homestead residences will remain at the 1994 millage rate.

We are deeply grateful for our community’s continued support.  Especially during these difficult financial times, passage of the Non-Homestead Renewal allows the district to maintain the current millage rate for operational funding.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE ON MAY 8th!!

Happy Spring Break Georgetown Parents!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…….  Well we made it!!  Spring Break is here!!  Yes, I know the day is not over, but I look at it this way…. we showed up today so officially we have made it to Spring Break!  What a day we had!  The Talent Show was fabulous as usual and the kids are really excited about having a few days off.  Remember that school resumes on Monday, April 9 and the first Friday we are back to school, which is Friday, April 13, that will be a TUESDAY/THURSDAY PK/K day!

LUNCH INFORMATION……… Here is the April lunch menu and a new deposit slip if you need one.   April 2012 Hud Elem     Menu Deposit Slip

BIKES/RIPSTICKS/ETC…….  Wow have we had a full bike rack this week!!  This warm weather sure does bring out the bikes and ripsticks.  With that being said, PLEASE REMEMBER to send a note with your child to their teacher giving them permission to ride/walk/ripstick home.  Unless you have done so, the teacher will be required to send them home however they normally get home, such as the bus!  Thank you for your help in this matter  : )

STUDENT DROP OFF……..    We have been noticing a HUGE increase in the amount of students being dropped off in the back of the school by the bus loop and the Middle School parking lot.  For student safety reasons we MUST have ALL students dropped off in front of Georgetown in the CIRCLE DRIVE.  The students are then able to walk around the building on the sidewalks to their playground.  Thank you for adhering to this safety rule.

ENTRANCE DRIVE SAFETY…….  As some of you are aware,  we had our first accident at the entrance to Georgetown/Baldwin Middle this week.  The car was attempting to make a left hand turn ONTO Baldwin St and was hit by an oncoming car.  Everyone was ok with minor cuts/bruises, none the less, a scary situation.  We are asking that during the busy drop-off and pick-up times that parents use the service drive by the athletic stadiums if you are needing to make a left hand turn onto Baldwin St.  This way you will come to an intersection with a traffic light.

One more thing in regards to the entrance drive…….. we have a huge concern for student safety here.  Cars are pulling into the drive and exiting the school at a high rate of speed.  This is becoming a safety concern more so now due to the amount of students walking/riding bikes to school.  PLEASE SLOW DOWN as you enter/exit the school drive!!  Thank you!  Remember it is for the safety of the students  : )

ZOX Staps…….  These are really cool bracelets that we are selling to benefit Spencer Meyer AND Jarod/Caleb Mulder.  Jarod and Caleb are also students in the district and attend Park Elementary.  Mr. Mulder is ALSO an employee of the district just as the Meyer’s are!  Jarod and Caleb have a disorder called MPS3A.  These bracelets are being sold for ONLY $7 each in the office and all of the proceeds are going directly back to the families!!  Stop by the office and get one!!  We have been selling a TON of these and have had to get more almost every day this week.  We should have more available also after Spring Break. HURRY IN!!  : )

12th ANNUAL STUDENT ART SHOW…….. Save The Date!  The 12th Annual Student Art Show is just around the corner!  Hudsonville’s annual art show includes masterpieces from students throughout the district, including 100 pieces from our Georgetown artists.  The show runs April 23 through 26 at the Park Elementary Community Room.  There will be a special artist reception for Georgetown students Tuesday, April 24 from 5:30-7:30 PM.  Please check out the attached flyer that will be up in all of the schools to promote this great event.  2012 Flyer-Blog PDF
