BLOG BITS 3/23/12

Happy Friday Afternoon Georgetown Parents!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……. Well we had another great week of weather, even though today is a little soggy.  Rain is needed too though : )  Can you believe it….. only 4 more school days until Spring Break!!  With that being said just a reminder there will NO SCHOOL next Friday, March 30!!  This will be the first day of Spring Break.  For PK/K parents please remember the first Friday back to school after Spring Break will be Friday, April 13 and that will be a TUESDAY/THURSDAY Friday!!

BIBLE CLUB…….  This was finished this past Monday, March 19.  So please remember not to have them stay after school on Monday, March 26.  Thank You  : )

BIKES/RIPSTICKS/ETC…….  Wow have we had a full bike rack this week!!  This warm weather sure does bring out the bikes and ripsticks.  With that being said, PLEASE REMEMBER to send a note with your child to their teacher giving them permission to ride/walk/ripstick home.  Unless you have done so, the teacher will be required to send them home however they normally get home, such as the bus!  Thank you for your help in this matter  : )

STUDENT DROP OFF……..    We have been noticing a HUGE increase in the amount of students being dropped off in the back of the school by the bus loop and the Middle School parking lot.  For student safety reasons we MUST have ALL students dropped off in front of Georgetown in the CIRCLE DRIVE.  The students are then able to walk around the building on the sidewalks to their playground.  Thank you for adhering to this safety rule.

ENTRANCE DRIVE SAFETY…….  As some of you are aware,  we had our first accident at the entrance to Georgetown/Baldwin Middle this week.  The car was attempting to make a left hand turn ONTO Baldwin St and was hit by an oncoming car.  Everyone was ok with minor cuts/bruises, none the less, a scary situation.  We are asking that during the busy drop-off and pick-up times that parents use the service drive by the athletic stadiums if you are needing to make a left hand turn onto Baldwin St.  This way you will come to an intersection with a traffic light.

One more thing in regards to the entrance drive…….. we have a huge concern for student safety here.  Cars are pulling into the drive and exiting the school at a high rate of speed.  This is becoming a safety concern more so now due to the amount of students walking/riding bikes to school.  PLEASE SLOW DOWN as you enter/exit the school drive!!  Thank you!  Remember it is for the safety of the students  : )

GEORGETOWN JOGGERS…….. At 9:00am tomorrow morning there will be 18 Georgetown Joggers running in the EAGLE 5K, which is a 3 mile race.  We wish them all GOOD LUCK and a great race!!  : )  Here are the Georgetown Joggers…Sarah Cook, Nathan Conkel, Luke Ellermets, Patrick and Peter Estefan (and Mom), Brad and Kensley Huizenga, Bretton Jahnke, Saige Jeltema, Zachary Kuieck, Mikayla Meyer, Bryce Morningstar, Emmalee Murphy, Ezra and Lorenzo Roerig, Tyler Sheldon, Will Smit, Tom Stutz (and Mom), Claire Telfor, Brayden Vredeveld, Jordan and Kayla Wolma!

SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT EVENTS…….  As many of you know, Spencer Meyer is a very special Kindergarten student here at Georgetown in Mrs. Estefan’s class and his parents, Jason and Jodi, are also staff members within the district.  Spencer is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and in March the family was informed that the cancer had returned in his spine.   The entire district is helping to raise money for the SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT FUND and we have a few things to let you know about.  These are great ways to help the family in this time of need!!

BENEFIT BASKETBALL GAME…….. will be held Friday, April 27 at 7:00pm at the High School.  This will be great night of fun for everyone!!  The game will be between the staff at Baldwin Middle and Riley Middle.  It will be the “Baldwin Street Ballers vs. Riley Street Rim-Rattlers”!  Doors will open at 6:30pm and entrance fees will be a VOLUNTARY DONATION to the Spencer Meyer Fundraiser!  Please come out and join us to show your support for the Meyer family!  Lots of fun things and the Eagle’s Landing will be selling $1.00 Squishees (slushees), there will be Jet’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s, pop and candy!  What could be better?!  So MARK your calendars for FRIDAY, APRIL 27!!

TEAM SPENCER….. Fliers for this event will be coming home with your YOUNGEST/AND OR ONLY STUDENT.  I am also attaching it here in the blog.   TEAM SPENCER kids sign up sheet 2  Please read the attached flier or the one sent home with your student for ALL of the details.  This will be a donation for the Spencer Meyer Benefit Fund through sponsorship of runners and individual donations.  There will be a form coming home through PE for FREE REGISTRATION for the children’s events!  You may also order t-shirts on this form.  Once again this is a great way to help out the Meyer Family!!

ZOX Staps…….  These are really cool bracelets that we are selling to benefit Spencer Meyer AND Jarod/Caleb Mulder.  Jarod and Caleb are also students in the district and attend Park Elementary.  Mr. Mulder is ALSO an employee of the district just as the Meyer’s are!  Jarod and Caleb have a disorder called MPS3A.  These bracelets are being sold for ONLY $7 each in the office and all of the proceeds are going directly back to the families!!  Stop by the office and get one!!  We have a limited amount and when they are gone we can not get any more.  HURRY IN!!  : )

12th ANNUAL STUDENT ART SHOW…….. Save The Date!  The 12th Annual Student Art Show is just around the corner!  Hudsonville’s annual art show includes masterpieces from students throughout the district, including 100 pieces from our Georgetown artists.  The show runs April 23 through 26 at the Park Elementary Community Room.  There will be a special artist reception for Georgetown students Tuesday, April 24 from 5:30-7:30 PM.  Please check out the attached flyer that will be up in all of the schools to promote this great event.  2012 Flyer-Blog PDF

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……..  Well here we go…… ONLY 19 school days until Spring Break!!   The countdown has begun.  Let’s just hope that since March came in like a lamb that it will NOT leave like a LION?!?!  We had a very busy 4 day week here at Georgetown.  Conferences went very well and once again we had a great turnout.  Coin Wars were also a big hit!  We are all hoping that it will be a great fund raiser for our school.  We will be sure and let everyone know how we did and who are the winning classrooms!

Parents please be sure to update phone numbers in the office if any of yours have  changed.  Whether it be home, work or cell.  After we had our snow day last week some parents realized that their numbers were not correct in our system and should have  been updated.  Just send us an email or call the office and we will be happy to update these for you.

5TH GRADE NEWS………  Immunization Requirements for 2012-2013 School Year ~ All incoming 6th graders (current 5th grade students) will have the immunization requirements as stated below:

1.  Two doses of Varicella vaccine or have a history of having chickenpox.
2.  One dose of meningococcal vaccine. (Students must be 11 yrs old before getting this dose)
3.  One dose of tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis (Tdap) (if 5 years or more have passed since last dose of tetanus/diphtheria vaccine – DTaP, Td or DT).

If your child needs immunizations, please make work of completing these immunizations during the 5th grade school year. Doing so will be a great help to the Middle School Secretaries who need to check for immunization compliance for every 6th grade student in our district.

Please be advised that any child who has not had all of his/her immunizations will not be allowed to start 6th grade.

BLOG BITS 1/6/12

Happy first Friday in January back to school!!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……..  Pre-K/Kindergaren schedules…..  Just a few quick reminders coming from the front office.  We know with the Holidays and having 2 weeks off from school everyone’s schedules get a little mixed up, so we are just giving the Pre-K and Kindergarten parents a head’s up as to the dates for Fridays in January.  JANUARY 13 AND 27 are MONDAY/WEDNESDAY Fridays.  JANUARY 20 is TUESDAY/THURSDAY Friday.

CALL INS AND NOTES FROM HOME……..  With all of the illness that is going around here at Georgetown we would just like to remind you to PLEASE call your student in if they are going to be LATE or ABSENT for the day.  With 647 students in our building it takes awhile to do attendance and for every student that is NOT ACCOUNTED FOR we MUST make a phone call to check on them.  This can take quite a long time, so it is GREATLY  APPRECIATED if you call your student in.

For changes in daily routines PLEASE remember to send a note in with your student.  If a student DOES NOT have a note for the teacher telling them of a change in plans the teacher will put them on the bus or whatever form of transportation they use normally.  We do understand that occasionally things will come up unexpectedly, but in these situations if you could please call the office as soon as you are aware of the change it is much easier to find the teacher and student to let them know.  The end of the day is very hectic and sometimes these messages are missed.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

PRE-K/KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT PACKETS…….  These will be available in the front office starting on TUESDAY, JANUARY 31.   We are not allowed to hand these out any sooner.  PLEASE REMEMBER that preferences are not determined by the date the enrollments are turned in.

ATTENTION ALL 4th GRADERS/PARENTS OF 4th GRADERS……  Swimming is coming soon.  Everyday, January 16 – 27 the 4th graders will be going to the High School for swimming lessons.  REMEMBER to send swim suits/towels OR the “NEEDED” essentials to change into after swimming if your student wears their suit under their clothes in morning.  Thank you, this saves the office ALOT of phone calls home  : )

FOOD SERVICE NEWS….  BREAKFAST…..Breakfast is Available in Your Building-  Breakfast is served at Georgetown from 8:25 to 8:50 every day that school is in session.  The cost is $1.25 for paying students, $.30 for students who qualify for reduced lunches and free for students who qualify for free lunches.  There are 4 breakfast kits to choose from with each kit including a cereal, bread item, 100% juice and a milk.  Join us and jump start your day with breakfast!

JANUARY LUNCH MENU……..  Jan. 2012 Hud. Elem Menu      Deposit Slip

COMMUNITY NEWS……. Is it Dyslexia?……. New Chapter Learning, an affiliate of Dyslexia Correction Foundation will provide a free informational seminar on the thinking style, learning differences, and gifts of the visual thinker. What are the characteristics of dyslexia, the root cause of dyslexia, and how the problem can be corrected. The seminar will be held on Tuesday, January 17th at 6:30 PM at Grandville Middle School; 3535 Wilson Ave, Grandville, MI. Room 200.
