Why do we have LEAP YEARS?

The year 2012 is a LEAP YEAR which means we have one additional day in the month of February and as a result, one additional day in  our year.

It takes 365 days plus a little more for the earth to travel around the sun.   This “little bit more” is evened out every four years with an extra day–February 29.

Babies born on this special day, celebrate on their actual birthdate once every four years.  On their non-leap year birthdays, they must celebrate on a day close to February 29–February 28 or March 1.

Visit HOW STUFF WORKS for more information about the purpose of  LEAP YEARs.

BLOG BITS 2/10/12

Happy Friday Georgetown Parents!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…….  Once again it has been a good week here at Georgetown!!  How much better does it get than with popcorn on Friday and knowing you only have 3 days of school next week!!  Of course we are still wishing for snow!  The sunshine did help however this week.

BOUNCY BALLS FOR KIDS IN HAITI……..  A very wonderful 5th grader, Paetyn Bentley, here at Georgetown is taking up a collection of bouncy balls to HAND deliver to children in the orphanages in Haiti. She will be traveling to Haiti in March with her family.  We currently have a collection box in the lobby outside of the office to put the bouncy  balls in.

PRE-K/KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT PACKETS…… These are available in the front office. PLEASE REMEMBER that preferences are not determined by the date the enrollments are turned in.

5TH GRADE NEWS………  Immunization Requirements for 2012-2013 School Year ~ All incoming 6th graders (current 5th grade students) will have the immunization requirements as stated below:

1.  Two doses of Varicella vaccine or have a history of having chickenpox.
2.  One dose of meningococcal vaccine. (Students must be 11 yrs old before getting this dose)
3.  One dose of tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis (Tdap) (if 5 years or more have passed since last dose of tetanus/diphtheria vaccine – DTaP, Td or DT).

If your child needs immunizations, please make work of completing these immunizations during the 5th grade school year. Doing so will be a great help to the Middle School Secretaries who need to check for immunization compliance for every 6th grade student in our district.

Please be advised that any child who has not had all of his/her immunizations will not be allowed to start 6th grade.

UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES FOR 5TH GRADERS……..  March 22 ~ 5th graders will be visiting the Middle School that they will be attending next fall.    April 10 ~ Instrument Fittings at Georgetown Elementary.  (This helps the students determine if and what instrument they might like to play in Middle School Band.)  April 18 ~ Parent Informational Meeting for parents of 5th graders.  This will be held at Baldwin Middle School in the Cafeteria at 7:00pm.
