More 2011-12 Kindergarten Scoop!

We have received many questions regarding enrollment of PK and K childrenblocks for the 2011-12 school year.

How old does my child need to be to enroll in PK or K?

  • Children eligible for PK or K must turn 5 years before December 1, 2011.

How do I find out about the difference between PK and K?

If my child is in PK with Mrs. Boes room this year,  do I need to attend Round Up?

  • No, you do not need to attend.  You simply need to complete a registration form for kindergarten.  This will arrive home this week.  Registration form can also be downloaded here:  K Registration

If  I have a child that will be NEW to Georgetown and you would like to find out more about PK and K, should I attend the meeting on March 8?

  • Yes,  we would love to provide you with information about the programs.

What if I cannot attend the meeting?

  • If you cannot attend the night meeting, we invite you to go to the 10 am meeting at Alward or South Elementary.  The information will be the same.  If the meeting times do not work for you, stop by Georgetown and pick up the enrollment information.  The office is open from 9 – 4 pm each day.

Should my child be screened to determine if a PK or K placement is best?

  • Every parent has the option to have their child screened.  We offer this screening to help parents with this decision. The screening is brief—-approximately 20 minutes.  Recommendations are shared at the end of the screening.  This is scheduled when you turn in the enrollment form.  Screening days are March 15 and 16.

Are Your Kids Immunized?

There are new requirements for immunization for children.  The  state rules have changed to include new vaccinations this year.

  • Now, kindergartners, sixth-graders and kids over age 11 changing school districts need two doses of the chicken pox vaccine.
  • Sixth-graders and those over age 11 who are changing districts need a meningococcal vaccine to protect against meningitis and a “Tdap” booster vaccine that protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough.

To find out more, you can visit the state website as well as the Grand Rapids Press immunization article.

Drum Roll, Please!

I am very excited to announce to you that our staff hiring is complete!  As I mentioned in aDrum roll blog posting on June 16,  some of our staff members took open positions in other buildings.  This created openings, allowing for movement within our building—and when all was said and done, we had six positions to fill for the coming school year.

On  July 1st, I posted a blog article announcing  four positions had been filled  as follows:  Miss Taber-1st Grade, Mrs. Wert, Resource Room, Mr. Kooiker-4th grade and Mr. Bialochowski -3rd grade, were joining our team.

With the help of several teachers from our building, we found three additional outstanding teachers to help us carry on our important mission of BE NICE • WORK HARD • LEARN WELL. They are each from neighboring districts and are as follows:

Mrs. Mandy Boes will be teaching pre-kindergarten (PK).   Mrs. Boes comes to us from Fruitport and has experience with PK and K children.  Mrs. Boes has a daughter Lucy who will be helping her set up the classroom —or maybe taking down what her momma has already put up!

Mrs. Lisa Jabaay will be teaching kindergarten.   Mrs. Jabaay comes to us from Kellogsville with experience in K and first grades.  She has two young children at home–and they may be seen helping set up their momma’s classroom.

Mr. Toby Jurewicz will be teaching 1st Grade.  He will join Miss Taber, Mrs. Woodring and Mrs. Stadt as the first grade team.   Mr. Jurewicz comes to us from Comstock Park where his wife is a kindergarten teacher.  I am sure that you will see both of them at school setting up his classroom!

All of our new teachers are busy setting up class blogs and getting acquainted with the school and their colleagues.  As soon as they have their blogs set up, an email alert will go out.

Thank you for your patience while we worked extra hard to find the just right teachers for our wonderful school!
