HAPPY FRIDAY GEORGETOWN PARENTS!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……… Well let’s just say the office is ready for Thanksgiving Break.  I think everyone needs a little time away and needs to get healthy!  Hopefully all of these wonderful germs will have settled down by then!  Please just make sure you are following the rule that if you child has a fever or has vomited that they need to stay home for 24 hours after the symptoms are gone!  That is so helpful to us here and helps to prevent others from getting these illnesses.

HELP NEEDED….. Please read the following as it is so important to our Holiday Shop. We REALLY need some more volunteers desperately!  If we can not get the volunteers needed this year we may have to stop doing this fun event for the students!  Please consider signing up for one of the following shifts!  The shop this year is Nov. 29 – Dec. 2.  These are the shifts that are available:   Monday, Nov. 29, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm (Set Up);  Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 8:45 am – 12:00 pm and 12:00 pm – 3:15 pm;  Thursday, Dec. 2, 8:45 – 12:00 pm and 12:00 pm – 3:15 pm (tear down).

If you can help out at one or two shifts that would be wonderful!  Please email Jamie Ham at cjham20@comcast.net with your availability!  Thanks for your help in advance!

CHAPSTICK DRIVE……… WOW, way to go Georgetown!!  As a school you donated 1,307 chapsticks!  These were donated to the Helen Devos Children’s Hospital for children undergoing surgery.  The chapstick is used to “sweeten the smell” of the anesthesia when rubbed on the inside of the mask for children undergoing surgery.  Happy Bainbridge and Alaina DePuy did this service project for their Girl Scout Troup #2955.  Way to go girls!

HOLIDAY PROGRAM……. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our annual Holiday Program!  It will be on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9 AT 7PM!  It will be at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville.  (The same place as last year.)  Please visit this blog post for more info    HOLIDAY PROGRAM.

P.E. NEWS…….. We had another great year for our P.E. Cares program!  As a school we collected 2,398 food items that were donated to a local church’s food pantry.  The winning class of the bowling field trip and t-shirts was 5th Grade – Mrs. Burdis.  Way to go 5th graders!  As a class they collected 284 items!  Please visit the P.E. Blog for the top 5 classes that collected the most items.

PTC NEWS……. Marco’s Pizza Night winner……… was Mrs. Jabaay’s Kindergarten class! Way to go Kindergartners!!  You guys are going to get a pizza party for lunch one day.  We once again had great participation and earned $110 for Georgetown.  What an easy way for families to help support our school and put food on the table!  Thanks again!!!

SAVE A WORD

savethewordsWhile driving home from work last week, I listened to a segment on NPR’s All Things Considered which was featuring a man who’s mission is to save words from dying.

Edward Ong, the word saver, created a site that allows visitors to “adopt a word.”  The terms of adoption are simple: The word’s new family agrees to use the word as frequently as possible in conversations throughout the days and weeks ahead.

If you are interested in adopting a word, visit SAVE THE WORDS. You’ll find yourself reaching for a dictionary for a definition or two!

Georgetown Surveyers

tape measureHave you seen these students in the hallway with measuring sticks?  I have watched them measure the length of hallways, the area of the rotunda and classrooms.  Their work in measuring was tied to an advanced math project they were doing for their fifth grade class.

One day I snapped a photo of them with a promise to get their project highlight on the school blog.  Here they are, the Georgetown Surveyers! I can picture each one of these girls pursuing a career that involves mathematical equations and precise detail.

Chapstick Donations = 1300

chapstick

Many thanks to everyone who made Happy Bainbridge and Alaina Dupuy’s chapstick service project a great success.  They managed to collect  1300 chapsticks for children at DeVos Children’s Hospital. First and fourth grades won the contest, bringing in a total of 366 chapsticks.

Happy and Alaina will be delivering the chapsticks later this week.  I am sure they will be put to use immediately, bringing comfort to the young patients in surgery and in recovery.

Thank you for helping with this great project.  It not only helps the children at DeVos but also assisted the girls with receiving their Bronze Girl Scout badge.

Weekly Events: November 15, 2010

winter clothingWe have had very mild days of fall weather so far this school year and this has allowed us to have an extended season of recess ball field use for kick ball, soccer, baseball and football.  BUT…it sounds like the forecast for the upcoming week is more typical for November with rain, winds and possibly some snow showers by week’s end.

We would like all children to be properly dressed for recess with hats, gloves/mittens and winter jacket.  Once the snow arrives, boots are a MUST!

I hope you are aware through the blog updates that we have a very contagious stomach virus moving through our school.  The onset is quite rapid with reported symptoms of a headache and/or yucky tummy.  The vomiting hits quickly.  When one child in a classroom gets sick, in short order others are sick as well.

We are cleaning surfaces as often as we can throughout the day and sick childreminding EVERYONE to wash their hands frequently.  If you child becomes sick, please keep him/her home for at least 24 hours to help us prevent the spreading of this intestinal issue.   Thank you for your help!

A snapshot of the week ahead is below.  Remember to check your child’s class blog for more specific grade/class events.

BLOG BITS 11/12/10

Happy Friday!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE………. Well it has been an interesting week here at Georgetown.  This is just an FYI message from the office staff…. we have sent home ALOT of students this week with the stomach flu!!  YUCK  : (  So just keep tabs on your students if they happen to tell you their stomach is upset.  It is quite a bad stomach bug, mostly vomiting and headache.  As a helpful reminder, please keep your child home for 24 hours after they have vomited for the last time.  This is a huge help and helps to prevent the spread of the germs here at school.  We are taking every precaution here too when the students get sick at school to sanitize.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM…….. I know, I know it is early, but we just wanted to give you a head’s up as to the date  and time.  We have had many calls so we thought we would let you know that it will be THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9 AT 7:00PM at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville.  More info will follow soon.

HELP NEEDED….. Good Afternoon!  It is that time again to sign up to volunteer for the Holiday Gift Shop!

GRIFFINS “SCHOOL NIGHT”……….. Your youngest and or only student should have come with a flyer for the Griffins “School Night”.  Georgetown will be attending the event with Alward Elementary also.  It will take place on Saturday, December 4 at 7:00pm.  The ticket money MUST be turned in NO LATER than MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15! Please send it in with your student in an envelope marked “GRIFFINS TICKETS” to their teacher.  Make checks payable to GEORGETOWN PTC. If you have any further questions please contact Staci Nieboer at 669-1923.

SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH………. I know, I know, I know…. it’s a little early to be talking like this, but we must do it and we were asked by food service to get this information out.  So here it comes…….With snow just around the corner, the food service program would like to remind parents and students about what will happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district is closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow day will be moved to the next school day. An example: ifschool is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.  Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to order a lunch if they need one. The only exception to this policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s
menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with the regular menu on Monday. Information on what menu will be served on the day you return will be available on the food service web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thankyou! -Stacey L. Wykoski, Food Service Director.

P.E. NEWS……. Our “P.E. Cares” food drive just started!  Last year we did an amazing job collecting non-perishable food items for the drive.  This will be taking place until NOVEMBER 17. The class that donates the most food will win a “P.E. Cares” t-shirt and they get to go on a bowling field trip to Hudsonville Lanes with their teacher and P.E. teacher! So start collecting those cans!

COMMUNITY ED NEWS…….. Wacky Science at Georgetown is in need of some more students!!  We just received word from Community Ed that we still are in need of a few more students to sign up for the class to be offered here at Georgetown.  The class will be starting on Wednesday, November 17 and goes through December 15.  It will go from 3:40 to 4:40p on Wednesdays and the cost is $58.  Parents can register at the community ed. office or online at www.hudsonvillepublicschools.org.

We still have the other two activities also that we mentioned last week from Community Ed.  The new programs being offered are Hudsonville Youth Wrestling and Soccer. Youth Wrestling is being offered for grades K – 6th and starts Tuesday, November 30.  Soccer is available for ages 5 thru 12 and starts Monday, November 22 or Wednesday, November 24.  I will attach both of these forms below.
