Be Nice • Be Safe • Be an UPSTANDER!

This week, we concluded our BE NICE • BE  SAFE Anti-Bullying lessons.  These lessons are taught during the first few weeks of school —  a focus on understanding what it ‘looks like’ and ‘sounds like’ to be nice and safe at school:  playground, hallway, classroom, lunchroom, bathroom and the school bus.

Classroom discussions are differentiated based on grade.  All lessons highlight the need to recognize and understand when rough play leads to hurtful words or actions — and how to step back and stop when you are part of this.  We teach the difference between a bystander and UPSTANDER.  An upstander stands up, speaks up and teams up to help others when they are being treated poorly.

You can view our key teaching points for these lessons below.

Siberian Express Update: Feb 23-27, 2015

I thought I would go with the Siberian Express theme for one more post.  After today, all future posts from me will contain hopeful signs of spring!

Based on the forecast for this week, we have more cold coming our way.  This means inside recess — which is a downer if your are either a PK-5 student or a PK-5 teacher.  We do a very good job of working the learners brains all day long.  If you haven’t notice, school is really hard work.  Outdoor recess allows the children to move their bodies, brains and mouths in a different way so they can relieve any stress from learning and get the blood flowing.  And, there are also the usual side benefits of choosing what you want to do, finding friends to talk too and the bonding that goes along with complaining about “nothing to do” or “being bored” or “why do we have recess when it’s so cold outside.”

go noodleWhen the weather necessitates indoor recess, we do everything we can to promote choice and movement within the constraints of the classroom doing our best to monitor for safety and responsible choices.  The teachers have created a resources list of Inside Recess Options that include movement and game resources.  One of our favorites is GONOODLE.   This site offers “short periods of physical activity – dancing, running, jumping, deep breathing, and more – to help kids channel their abundant energy. Kids wiggle.”  GoNoodle gets the wiggles out, so we can get back to learning important stuff.

Our weekly events are listed below.  As you can see, no big school related events.  Check your child’s class blog to make sure you are up to speed on homework, quizzes, learning celebrations, etc.  The big event coming is PK•K Round UP.  This is a meeting for parents of upcoming PK/K classes.  For me, it is also a sign of spring!

Have a great weekend!

Up Up and Away at Georgetown Elementary!

IMG_1317

We served as the launch site for the REMAX Balloon today.  The visit was timed perfectly to match our fourth grade science air and matter unit of study.  Our entire school watched the REMAX team unfold the balloon, fill it with cool air and then hot air.  As the balloon filled, it rose and the basket lifted off the ground…with Mrs. Reagan inside.  It was a short ride (7 feet up) which was just perfect for a very windy May day!  Many thanks to Malachi Hollis for the great photos of this event.

Week 20: January Wrap Up

Chris Crowley and his beautiful daughter, Ellise.

This Saturday evening, our school Multi-Purpose Room was transformed into a winter wonderland for the PTC sponsored Daddy/Daughter Dance.  The room and surrounding halls were filled with beautiful daughters and handsome, proud dads having fun together dancing, posing for pictures in the photo booth, playing a scavenger hunt and much more.  It was an amazing night made possible by Amy McCormick with support from the PTC board and the many parents who donated items.

All of the PTC events highlighted on the blog are planned by the PTC board and organized by parents — all volunteer time.  The funding comes from your parent donations that are made through our once a year fundraiser, the fall WALK-A-THON.  Thank you this commitment.  The memories made by families at these events are priceless.

Below have posted the agenda for week ahead at Georgetown.  I can’t believe that there are only four days left in the month!  The week ahead is quiet — fourth grade swimming is done (allowing special times to return to normal) and no field trips on the calendar for other classes.

Have a great week…and drive safely if you are out on the roads tonight and tomorrow.

May Wraps Up and June Begins: Week 36

It’s the single digit count down:  Only 8.5 days of school remaining.  There is much to be done in the background — classlist work, final assessments, grading and report cards.  In addition, we are growing our staff so we will be adding four teachers and re-allocating spaces.

At the same time, we will be celebrating the remaining days with final projects, picnics, 5th grade celebration (May 30) and a host of other activities featured on your child’s class blog.

Kindergarten Parents:  Remember that the final day of school for MW in June 4.  The final day of school for TTH is June 5.  No kindergarten classes will be held on June 6, 7, and 8.

We will dismiss school at 1 pm on June 8.  As tradition holds, the staff with gather in the bus loop for a big send off of our busses — with the drivers making 2 or 3 rounds through the loop so we can wish all a happy summer.

A snapshot of the remaining days can be found below.  Here’s to a great wrap up of the year with updates to come about Open Library in the summer (TUESDAY MORNINGS) and more.

I hope your Memorial Weekend has been a great introduction to summer fun for your family!

January Wraps Up…

and February rolls in!  The week opens up with the final three days of January and ends on Ground Hogs Day.

It’s ironic that Ground Hog’s Day serves as our marker for counting down to spring when we have had so many spring days in January!  Even more ironic that as I type this, several inches of snow are accumulating in my yard.  What a strange month this has been for weather.

A snapshot of our week ahead is below.  I hope you have a great weekend….and here’s to a great month of February.

Background Check Forms

To ensure safety for all of our students, we are adding a layer of protection that requires all volunteers to submit a background check.  You will receive the paperwork home this week. You can also print the form from this location and send it in with your child at any time.

The form must be completed for parents who plan to support classroom instruction (web reading, center support, general classroom assistance, and field trips).   You can also stop by the office and pick up a form to complete.  All information will be submitted to the Human Resources Department.  LINK to BACKGROUND CHECK.

Each teacher will have a list of parents who have completed the background check.  Volunteers for classroom work and field trips will be pulled from these lists.

Thank you for you help in ensuring that we have a safe climate for learning.

Happy Groundhog Day!

groundhogFebruary 2 is, I believe, one of the most unusual holidays around:  GROUNDHOG DAY.   For those who are sick of winter, this holiday serves as as the six week countdown to spring like weather.

I visited the official groundhog website to collect some interesting tidbits to help sharpen your knowledge of this auspicious holiday.

  • On February 2, Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob – in front of thousands of followers from all over the world – to predict the weather for the rest of winter.
  • According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.
  • The celebration of Groundhog Day began with Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states, “For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day, so far will the snow swirl in May…”
  • Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800s. The first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob was made on February 2, 1887.

The Washington Post reported early this morning that Phil DID NOT SEE HIS SHADOW…which means spring will arrive early.    Our blog count down (upper right corner) shows days left until the spring equinox.  Phil predicts spring will be arriving sooner than this!

Good news for those of you who aren’t happy with our many inches of new snow!

Festival Night: Support the HEF!

HEF Family Fun Fest

The Hudsonville Education Foundation (HEF) is an organization that supports the teaching and learning in Hudsonville Schools. The HEF is managed by Hudsonville community members who want to give back to the school system. Funds raised through this non-profit 501C3 organization go directly to teacher mini-grants that positively impact student learning.

Please join us for our First Annual HEF Family Fun Fest before and during the HUDSONVILLE vs. Grandville football game on September 24.

At 5:00 there will be a dunk tank (where you will be able to dunk someone from Georgetown), inflatables, and face painting. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.

Please come and support the HEF!

Background Checks: Volunteer Requirement

To ensure safety for all of our students, we are adding a layer of protection that requires all volunteers to submit a background check.  You will receive the paperwork home with your packet of student information forms that must be completed at the start of the school year.

The form must be completed for parents who plan to support classroom instruction (web reading, center support, general classroom assistance, and field trips).  Forms will arrive home in the start up packets.  You can also stop by the office and pick up a form to complete.  All information will be submitted to the Human Resources Department.  Link to Background Check Form.

Each teacher will have a list of parents who have completed the background check.  Volunteers for classroom work and field trips will be pulled from these lists.

Thank you for you help in ensuring that we have a safe climate for learning.
