Summer Snapshot = College Tours

To help our new parents and students become familiar with us (the Georgetown staff), we will be sharing a little bit about ourselves and families in the weeks ahead through our blog posts.

Through these posts, we hope you see all of us as teachers who are also family members, parents, spouses, community members and quite simply, individuals who can’t wait to learn about all of you too!

I am choosing to kick off my summer snapshot series with the feature: COLLEGE TOURS.  I know that some of you are enrolling your first child into pre-kindergarten or kindergarten, so the contents of this post may cause you to GULP as you think about preparing your child for college. Apologies for any anxiety I cause in advance!

My daughter, Kelsey, is officially a high school senior.   As a result, one of our summer adventures has been touring colleges in the midwest.   We have spent many hours together in the car driving through the states of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio to visit schools with the hopes of finding the top four for application purposes.

A few highlights of our adventures include a flat tire (which we took care of ourselves), surprise meeting with an albino squirrel, a giant gum ball eating contest (we did this to entertain ourselves on long drives) and new friendships—we met so many great people along the way.

If you are interested in following how I cope with the final year of high school, feel free to follow my 365 Senior Year photo journal.  I plan to use these photos in some special way at my daughter’s open house next June.

Appleseed Article, Summer 2010 Edition

Our district publishes an all district newsletter five times throughout the school year.  This newsletter is mailed with the Advance newspapers during the publication cycles which allows us to share all we are doing with an audience that is much broader than our own building communities.

This Appleseed communication includes an update from our superintendent (Nicholas Ceglarek) and many highlights about academics, special events and academics throughout the district.  All of our schools use this communication to highlight events that have been shared in our newsletters/blogs within our own buildings.

I will begin posting these on our blog and file them in a category titled, APPLESEED.  You will also be able to find them by typing in the word appleseed into the search bar found on the blog sidebar.

The most recent newsletter can be viewed by clicking on the highlight words below.  Please note that the times for our district open houses are not correct in this publication.

The correct times are as follows:

Grades PK and K:  August 31

All teachers in grades 1st through 5th:

  • September 1, 6:30-7:30 pm.

Introducing our New Teachers

Library Check

Our new teaching staff came to open library on Wednesday.   Many of our staff, students and parents came to welcome them to Georgetown.  It was a wonderful opportunity for the team to see the building and learn about all the great people at our school.

We had well over 40 parents and children visit…and more than 70 books checked out of our library.   Each week the library is staffed with teachers who love reading as much as they love seeing kids on summer vacation.  If you have not been to open library yet, try to visit before summer ends!

Drum Roll, Please!

I am very excited to announce to you that our staff hiring is complete!  As I mentioned in aDrum roll blog posting on June 16,  some of our staff members took open positions in other buildings.  This created openings, allowing for movement within our building—and when all was said and done, we had six positions to fill for the coming school year.

On  July 1st, I posted a blog article announcing  four positions had been filled  as follows:  Miss Taber-1st Grade, Mrs. Wert, Resource Room, Mr. Kooiker-4th grade and Mr. Bialochowski -3rd grade, were joining our team.

With the help of several teachers from our building, we found three additional outstanding teachers to help us carry on our important mission of BE NICE • WORK HARD • LEARN WELL. They are each from neighboring districts and are as follows:

Mrs. Mandy Boes will be teaching pre-kindergarten (PK).   Mrs. Boes comes to us from Fruitport and has experience with PK and K children.  Mrs. Boes has a daughter Lucy who will be helping her set up the classroom —or maybe taking down what her momma has already put up!

Mrs. Lisa Jabaay will be teaching kindergarten.   Mrs. Jabaay comes to us from Kellogsville with experience in K and first grades.  She has two young children at home–and they may be seen helping set up their momma’s classroom.

Mr. Toby Jurewicz will be teaching 1st Grade.  He will join Miss Taber, Mrs. Woodring and Mrs. Stadt as the first grade team.   Mr. Jurewicz comes to us from Comstock Park where his wife is a kindergarten teacher.  I am sure that you will see both of them at school setting up his classroom!

All of our new teachers are busy setting up class blogs and getting acquainted with the school and their colleagues.  As soon as they have their blogs set up, an email alert will go out.

Thank you for your patience while we worked extra hard to find the just right teachers for our wonderful school!
