Recognizing Our Artists

Art Blog

Last week,  over 40 of our student artists were recognized at the district Art Show.  The event, I believe, was the best ever.   If you visit Mrs. Brouwer’s blog, you can see the pieces and points of celebration from the show.

Many thanks to everyone who made this possible:  district art teachers, student artists (who’s work wouldn’t make this event possible), parents, administrative and board support of our fine arts program.

Our art program has also been recognized in yet another way:  Mrs. Brouwer’s blog was selected as the featured blog of the week for the international Edublogger’s community.   Her blog was selected because of the way in which student work is celebrated–and for the use of the blog to communicate with parents, students and the world.  Announcement of this honor was posted to facebook, twitter and the Edublog community blog forum. Congratulations to Mrs. Brouwer and all of our artists!

We have something to say….JUST WRITE!

jw logo

If you haven’t heard, one of the most important all school celebrations is fast approaching.  The week of May 24-28 is our opportunity to honor 600 writers–students in grades PK-5, teachers and the principal.   This will be our fourth annual celebration.

The week is organized into classroom celebrations which include a reading of their stories, tour of posted poster stories displayed throughout the building, and a scavenger hunt.  Parents and special guests are invited to attend these events.  Each teacher will be posting their celebration/tour time on their classroom blogs.

JWSchedule

In addition to the tours of student writing pieces (displayed on lockers) and specially selected poster stories on display throughout the hallways, the rotunda will also be filled with published classroom anthologies.  During the past two years, writers select their best piece to be published through an online book site called lulu.com.  Please take time to see our publications in the rotunda.   We will be sure to send you the link to our published stories once we have these on the lulu site.

We also have a tradition of wearing special designed Just Write T-Shirts on that day.  If you would like to purchase one for your child, you can download the order form and send this into the office.  Just Write T-Shirt Order Form We will accept orders through May 5.

If you would like to view a photo video from last years celebration, visit the MAY 2009 blog post.

We look forward to celebrating our writing work with you.

The Week Ahead: April 26, 2010

I simply cannot believe that we are entering the final week of April.  All of a sudden, it feels like the school year is moving at the speed of light.

We will begin the serious and important work of class placements for next year on May 1.  If you have not completed the Child Profile Form, please do so as soon as possible.  This information is so critical for our placement work.  The process was explained in an earlier post, which you may want to check out.  So far, over 200 parents have completed the online form.  (These forms do not need to be completed for current 5th grade students because they are moving onto Baldwin Middle School.)

Here’s to a fabulous week!

Raey Guang Visit On Schedule

Raey GuangOur visitors from Raey Guang Elementary are firming up their itinerary for their visit to the United States in early June!  They will arrive at Georgetown on June 3rd and depart on June 4.

The interest in the trip was higher than expected.  The teachers and principal were overwhelmed with 70 student applications.  Because there were spots for only 32, the students had to take an English exam and perform in an audition or interview.

The purpose of the visit is to introduce the students to American culture and traditions, as well as exposure to English language.  The time at Georgetown will give them a taste of American schooling.  Each Raey Guang child will be matched with a student from our building which will allow them to ride the bus home, eat dinner with their host family, spend the night and ride back to school on Friday, June 4.  This should be a wonderful experience.

I have matched 22 Georgetown students with Raey Guang students.  I am still looking for 10 more host students.  If you are interested, and your child is in grades 3-5, please let me know via email or phone.  You can also comment on the blog and I will receive this notice as well.
