PINK WEEK

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS FUNDRAISER
Benefiting SUSAN G. KOMAN for the CURE: 100% OF PROCEEDS DONATE

On Friday, May 1, 2009 Georgetown Elementary school will be having a breast cancer awareness fundraiser day. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Fundraising will take place by purchasing a breast cancer awareness product (see product order form) or by donations. These products would make a great Mother’s Day gift!! Please make all checks out to the Georgetown Parent Club. Products can be pre-ordered between April 13 – April 21, 2009. This will allow us to know how many products to order. The same products will also be for sale on Friday, May 1 if you do not pre-order them in advance. A table with products displayed will be set up in the school for kids and parents to purchase an item or make a donation. This will also be the time to pick up your pre-ordered item.

On Friday, May 1 the kids will celebrate PINK PARTY Day and are being asked to wear as much PINK as possible. The teachers from each grade will be judging for the most PINK outfit and a child from each grade will win a prize. We also plan to have the local newspaper(s) take a photo of all the kids in pink and publish an article in the newspapers.

Please return this Order Form between April 14 and April 21. Checks should be made payable to Georgetown Elementary.

*This project is being organized by Ashley Teisman, a 4th grader at Georgetown Elementary.

April is Poetry Month

I found this wonderful site called GOODY BLOG.  I thought I would share it with you. It is powered by Parents Magazine.

Alphabetica Their recent post features information about National Poetry Month: April.   Our school wide writing program features a poetry unit of study.  Each year, teachers share their surprise and excitement regarding the quality pieces of poetry produced by students in every grade.  Knowing that many teachers save this unit of study for the spring months, I thought you might enjoy this post.

” April was the lucky month dubbed National Poetry Month and poets.org told me this: T. S. Eliot wrote, “April is the cruelest month.” It is our hope that National Poetry Month lessens that effect.
So in honor of April, poetry and all the non-weather-resistant shoes stuck in our closets for another 30 days, I present Alphabetica, Odes to the Alphabet. This bright, intricately designed kid’s book dedicates a poem and a picture-filled page to each letter of the alphabet. As a bad-weather bonus, “P” is for puddles. Here’s an excerpt, “Splishy, splashy, getting drenched, puddle-jumping, sopping wet..”  Sopping wet, indeed. ”

Just Write: Our Books Are Published!

We Have Something to Say...

Our 2nd annual and  HUGE celebration of writing called, “We have something to say…JUST WRITE!” is just four weeks away.  The event takes place during the week of May 4, with different events scheduled each day. Teachers are busy preparing student stories for publication on lockers, hallways, doors, posters, and BOOKS. We are publishing a book for each class, and these will be available through lulu.com. For each book purchased, we will receive $4.00 to put toward our writing program (supplies, author visits, and software).  In addition, you can download a book for free–an important option in these economic times.

Please be sure to visit our lulu STOREFRONT to check out our publications.

Help the Brownies Help Kids

Hudsonville Brownie Troop #2955 has adopted Kids Food Basket as their chosen charity for 2009-2010.   This group of third grade girls represents students from both Alward Elementary and Georgetown Elementary.
Our contact at Kids Food Basket has told us that they are in dire need of 100% juice boxes!  Our troop would like to help so we are asking you for your help!   Please consider donating either juice boxes or gift cards to purchase juice boxes.

Kids Food Basket provides nearly 1,600 sack suppers to over hungry children from 16 area schools EVERY SCHOOL DAY!  And there are 17 local schools on the waiting list. Each sack supper costs just 86 cents, or $140 per child per school year!   Your donation can make an incredible difference!  Thank you for your consideration.

Please place JUICE BOXES in labeled box in the front lobby.

Spring Service Project Update

Many of you have contributed to the Shereda Family’s Spring Service Project. So far, we have received $200 in gift cards to local groceries stores.  These gift cards are being used to keep all classroms stocked with snacks for children who do not have a mid-morning treat from home.  We also received a generous donation of $100.00 from the creators of the Kingdom Assignment, Leesa and Denny Bellesi. This money is being used to pay for student lunches–a small way to help families who do not qualify for free lunch.  Thank you to EVERYONE who has made a donation toward this incredible spring service project.
