VOTE FOR CAMP PINEWOOD

As you know, every spring we take our 5th graders to Camp Pinewood for a three day, 2 night camping trip.  Camp Pinewood is a YMCA camp located in Twin Lakes, Michigan (near Muskegon).  This camp has phenomenal staff.  They truly have made a difference in the lives of many of our students over the past several years.

Nearly 5,000 children each year come to experience new things and have fun at Camp Pinewood. They deserve to have a field that allows them to experience the power of sports and team play
This field is important to the community because:  Children of so many different socio-economic backgrounds come here to learn new things and to meet new people. It links many communities together.

This field is in poor condition because: The camp was forced to cut expenses this year and not complete a field renovation that began last year.

Every year the Kellogg company offers the opportunity to fix up athletic fields at 30 locations throughout the country.  Camp Pinewood is one out of thousands of applicants that have the opportunity to have their athletic fields redone–and they need our help to win.

Simply go to the Kellogg’s website and vote for the camp.  Search for the camp by typing in Camp Pinewood.  When it comes up, click on the camp photo and then VOTE!

FRIDAY FACTS FTO

FRIDAY FACTS FTO
5/8/09

WOW what a week!!!!  “Just Write” was another huge success this year!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE
18 school days and counting!  Hold on tight, these last few days will be a whirlwind!  But FUN!!!

Please forgive me for not getting a FTO for the last few weeks, but the office has been a little crazy with visitors and we are really hard at work trying to get all the Kindergarten lists finalized.

**Please do not forget to view our calendar on the right hand side of the blog.  This will have our calendar of dates for important events through the rest of the year.

FOOD SERVICE NEWS
FOOD SERVICE INFORMATION FOR THE END OF THE YEAR AND SCHOOL YEAR 2009-2010
REMINDER:
Please keep an eye on your child’s account balance as we get to the end of the school year. Your child will not be allowed to start the new school year with a negative lunch account balance. This is also true if your child will be going to the middle school or junior high building and they have a negative amount left from the elementary building. You can use the LunchDeposit.com online system to check on balances or you can contact the Food Service office at 457-2400 to find out what your balance is. Final balances will be available after June 8, 2009. Money that is left in your child’s account will be carried over to the next school year. If your child is a 5th/6th or 8th grader, their remaining money will be moved to their account at the middle school, junior high or senior high. If you wish to transfer money between your children’s accounts, you need to send a note to the server in your school letting them know from which account you want the money taken from and which account you want it deposited in. Please write the full first and full last name of all children when asking for a transfer. If you do not want the money in your child’s account to carry over the summer, you will need to send a written request to your school for a refund. The request must include your child’s name, school building and where you would like the money sent to. Refund checks will be issued after June 8, 2009.
Requests received after June 8, 2009 will not be processed until August 25, 2009. It is also important to let the food service department know if your child will be moving to a different building or district for the 2009/10 school year. You do not need to let us know if they will be moving up to secondary building in your same district. The lunch and milk prices for 2009/2010 will remain the same. A reminder that we WILL NOT be sending out a lunch packet in August. You will be receiving a bright yellow postcard that will direct you to our website (www.jenhudfood.org). This website will have all the lunch information including a copy of the free and reduced lunch application. You can also apply for free or reduced price meals after August 1, 2009 at www.lunchapp.com. A new free/reduced lunch application must be filled out every year.  A paper packet with all of this information will be available in the school office and at the district office for those homes that do not have access to the Internet or just would prefer to pick up a packet. Look for your bright yellow postcard in the mail the week of August 10.  Please feel free to contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have any questions or concerns.

Spring Has Sprung!

Spring has sprung and there have been lots of questions about things with wheels and what is allowed on the playground, etc.  Please support us with the following procedures regarding “things with wheels!”

Students are allowed (with parent permission) to bike, skateboard or ripstick it to school.  Bikes are parked at the rack and students walk to playgrounds.  Skateboards and ripsticks can be used UP TO the playground entrance and then MUST BE CARRIED onto the playground —as well as all sidewalks on the play ground/bus loop area.  NO USE (including TRICKS) with these at school will be allowed….even while waiting for the bus.

Ripsticks/skateboards are stored inside lockers.   Thank you for your support!  Safety is our focus.

Let me know if you have questions!  Mrs. Reagan

TAKE 25: Child Safety Campaign

WHAT IS TAKE 25?
• Take 25 is a national child safety campaign encouraging parents and guardians to take twenty-five minutes to talk to their children about ways to stay safer.
• A program of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® (NCMEC) created in commemoration of National Missing Children’s Day
• Take 25 promotes an ongoing dialogue between children, families, and communities
about child safety issues.
• Take 25 is a national grassroots initiative designed to raise awareness of the issues
surrounding missing and exploited children.
WHAT IS NATIONAL MISSING CHILDREN’S DAY?
• National Missing Children’s Day was first declared a nationwide day of commemoration by former President Ronald Reagan in 1983 and has continued to be annually marked by each Administration.
• Annually honored as May 25th, this day serves as a reminder to the nation to renew efforts to reunite missing children with their families, remember those who are still missing and make child protection a national priority.

WHY IS TAKE 25 IMPORTANT?

• According to a study by the U.S. Department of Justice there were an estimated 800,000 children reported missing in the United States in 1999, amounting to roughly 2,200 per day. Thankfully, the vast majority are located quickly.
• According to that same DOJ study, an estimated 58,200 children were abducted that year by non-family members. About 115 children are the victims of the most serious, long-term abductions that people consider “stereotypical kidnappings.”
• A 2003 study conducted by RoperASW, a leading marketing research firm, surveyed a group of more than 1,000 parents and grandparents. The study’s results indicated the need for increased parental/guardian education as half of the parents and grandparents considered child abduction and sexual exploitation to be a “very big” problem.

For more information, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office has teamed up with the following groups; Michigan Masons, Safe Kids Lakeshore, Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Sam’s Club to promote the TAKE 25 campaign. On Wednesday May 20, 2009 stop in at the Sam’s Club at 2190 North Park Drive in Holland Township located adjacent to US 31 between 4p-8p to learn more on the TAKE 25 campaign. Children will have the opportunity to take part in the Masons MICHIP program. In a matter of minutes, you’ll walk away with a “Child ID kit” that includes everything needed for the Amber Alert system. You can also visit booths sponsored by Safe Kids Lakeshore and learn more about Bike, Boater or Home safety as well as information on child safety seats. Join your community in learning how to keep our children safe on May 20, 2009.

NEWS from the OFFICE
Just a friendly reminder from the office that the students have next Thursday, March 5, and Friday, March 6 off. This is considered our winter break. This also means that Friday, March 13 is a Tuesday/Thursday Pre-K/K day!!!

A few things that are extremely helpful for the office. The office is very busy at the start/end of the day. If you have a change in plans for your child could you please make sure to try and call us by 3:00pm. As the end of the day is crazy and the teachers are sometimes hard to reach as they are getting students ready for the busses and parent pick-up! What works best for all is if you send a note in with your student to give to the teacher.

Last, but not least, the playground is very muddy right now. Please keep sending the boots along. If the students want to leave the black-top they need to have boots. Please try to remind your children to be careful as it is getting to be a habit to call home for dry clothes!

Residents of the district are encouraged to participate in the process by attending an open forum conducted by a MASB representative on Tuesday, March 10, 7:00 p.m., at Park Elementary, 5525 Park Avenue, Hudsonville, MI 49426.

The MASB representative will provide an overview of the search process and receive input from community members regarding the criteria to be used in evaluating candidates.

If you are unable to attend, a letter or card listing ideas and viewpoints about characteristics and competencies of a superintendent may be sent to Superintendent Search Services, Michigan Association of School Boards, 1001 Centennial Way, Suite 400, Lansing, MI  48917 by March 10, 2009.

I Think this is it for now!
