BLOG BITS 11/5/10

Happy First Friday in NOVEMBER!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……. Wow this year is flying by!  We had a very busy week here at Georgetown with parent teacher conferences and the book fair this week.  Lots of traffic coming in and out of the building!

WARM CLOTHING….. Please make sure when your children leave the house they are dressed appropriately for the “new” COLD weather we have been seeing.  This past week many students have come to school not dressed warm enough to be outside on the playground before school starts.  We have still been sending them out, but reminding them they need to dress warmer.

GRIFFINS “SCHOOL NIGHT”……….. Your youngest and or only student should have come with a flyer for the Griffins “School Night”.  Georgetown will be attending the event with Alward Elementary also.  It will take place on Saturday, December 4 at 7:00pm.  The ticket money MUST be turned in NO LATER than MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15! Please send it in with your student in an envelope marked “GRIFFINS TICKETS” to their teacher.  Make checks payable to GEORGETOWN PTC. If you have any further questions please contact Staci Nieboer at 669-1923.

SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH………. I know, I know, I know…. it’s a little early to be talking like this, but we must do it and we were asked by food service to get this information out.  So here it comes…….With snow just around the corner, the food service program would like to remind parents and students about what will happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district is closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow day will be moved to the next school day. An example: ifschool is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.  Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to order a lunch if they need one. The only exception to this policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s
menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with the regular menu on Monday. Information on what menu will be served on the day you return will be available on the food service web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thankyou! -Stacey L. Wykoski, Food Service Director

P.E. NEWS……. Our “P.E. Cares” food drive just started!  Last year we did an amazing job collecting non-perishable food items for the drive.  This will be taking place until NOVEMBER 17. The class that donates the most food will win a “P.E. Cares” t-shirt and they get to go on a bowling field trip to Hudsonville Lanes with their teacher and P.E. teacher! So start collecting those cans!

PTC NEWS……. Well we had a Jet’s Pizza Night this past week and the winner is…………. drum roll please…… 1st Grade Miss Taber’s class!  That is one pizza eating classroom, they were the winners of the Marco’s Pizza Party too!  Way to go 1st Graders!  You Georgetown families are the best.  You raised another $189.50 for our school! Fire Coats 4 Kids – No Child Goes Cold…….. Georgetown Fire Department is starting our 2nd Annual “Fire Coats 4 Kids- No Child Goes Cold” Campaign.  Georgetown Township is the largest township in Ottawa County, with close to 50,000 residents.  Due to the current state of the economy there is a great need in the Jenison/Hudsonville school systems for winter coats.  In the 2010 school year there was an estimated 500 students in both school districts in need of assistance.  During this time, through donations from our generous community, we were able to collect and distribute over 800 coats to our school system and local charities.  This year we are hoping to match our successes from last year and collect new and gently used winter coats, gloves, and hats for the kids of Georgetown Township.
It’s easy to donate, we have three convenient locations:
GTFD Station 1: located on the corner of 44th St. and 14th Ave.
GTFD Station 2: located at 7518 Church St., just west of Main St.
GTFD Station 3: located south of Baldwin on 36th Ave.
Donations will be accepted at these locations until mid December.
Also you can donate at the Georgetown Twp. Library at 1525 Baldwin St.

Happy Friday before Halloween!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…… Wow, what a busy day here at Georgetown!  It was party day and there was just a flurry of parents in and out of the building all day!  We are so sorry that Mrs. Ripley and Mrs. Nurenberg had to miss all the fun, however, they did call in a couple of fun PE subs to fill in in the office, a.k.a Mz. Ripster and Mz. Nurdie!

Conference Time……  Conference dates and times arates ane as follows…. November 1, 5pm to 8:30pm; November 2, 4pm to 6pm; and November 3, 4pm to 6pm. Teachers had a staff meeting last night to do scheduling for conferences, so please be watching for your conference time to be coming home.  PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO CHECK THE LOST AND FOUND TABLE ON YOUR WAY PAST THE LIBRARY.

NOTES FOR THE TEACHER……  Parents this is a reminder from the staff and the office here at Georgetown.  We MUST have a note in order for your student to have a change in their transportation at the end of the day.  The teachers, rightfully so, have a hard time with all of the changes that are being made at the last minute at the end of the day!  If we DO NOT have a note stating that there is a change in plans for the end of the day the student will be sent home with their usual mode of transportation!  Remember, not only does this inconvenience you, but we are also first and foremost concerned for the student’s safety when they arrive home!  We have had to make many phone calls at the end of the day due to students saying they are being picked up, but really they were supposed to go home as usual.  The office is very busy at the end of the day and the teachers do not have time to be double checking everyone’s schedule.  Thank you for your consideration in this very important matter.

AFTERSCHOOL BIBLE CLUB…. For those students participating in this activity there will be NO Bible Club next MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST!

PE NEWS…… Well were sorry about having to cancel the Turkey Trot this year, but we still have some winners here from Georgetown that were drawn out of the hat.  Here they are:  TURKEY WINNERS – Paige Gradowski (2-Kuieck), Alyssa Walker (3-Greenlund), Jakob Wortman (K-Bohl); APPLE CIDER WINNERS – Celia Barber (2-Quigley), Anna Fumarolo (K-Jabaay), Kelsey Gelder (4-Huizenga); PUMPKIN WINNERS – Kenzey Burget (1-Stadt), Colton Roby (3-VanArkel), and Ashley Strick (2-Quigley).

PTC NEWS….. We have Box Top winners to announce and the winners of the Marco’s Pizza night from last Wednesday.  BOX TOP WINNERS are as follows:  EARLY CHILDHOOD WING – Dylan Ham (1-Stadt), Addison Jeltema (1-Woodring); 2ND/3RD GRADE WING – Jaron Dykstra (2-Quigley), Elizabeth Ball (2-Kuieck);  4TH/5TH GRADE WING – Brendan Ham (4-Bowen); Emilee Peterson (4-Huizenga).  These lucky winners all receive a $5 gift certificate to McDonald’s!

BLOG BITS 9/17/10

Happy Friday afternoon Georgetown Parents!!

Well we have survived our first full week of school.  I hope everything is going as smooth at home with the new routines as here at school.  We truly are fortunate to have such a great group of kids!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……. Just  a few things from the office crew.  School pictures will be taken on Monday and Tuesday, September 20 and 21Everyone will be photographed on MONDAY,  UNLESS your child is a Tuesday/Thursday Kindergartner or pre-schooler.  Anyone who is absent on Monday will be able to have their picture taken on Tuesday.

NOTES from home…….  please make sure you send a note from home if there will be any changes for after school transportation. It is extremely busy here at school and there are alot of things for the teachers to remember at the end of the day.  It makes it so much easier for the teacher if they have a note to put up by the door to remind them at the end of the day.  If there is no note to alert the teacher of a change, your student will be put on the bus to go home.

DROP-OFF/PICK-UP……..  If your students are riding their bikes to school or being dropped off please make sure they are not arriving at school before 8:30 am.  There is no supervision for the students before this time and for their safety we ask that they not arrive before this time.  As for Pick-up we ask that whomever is picking up that you are here at 3:40pm.

LIBRARY NEWS…….  We have enrolled our school in the Book It Program which is sponsored by Pizza Hut.  This program will run from October through March.  Each grade level will have a weekly reading goal.  A calendar will go home at the end of each month for students to track their reading minutes for the following month.  Once they have met their goal, send the calendar back and we will collect and issue them a certificate for a FREE one-topping Personal Pan Pizza.  You have 30 days from the date on the back of certificate to redeem it.  This program may be combined with Reading Counts and any at home reading.  Please direct all your questions to our Librarian Mrs. VandenBerg at jvandenb@hpseagles.net Feel free to also visit the Book It!
