Raising A Reader School Contest

RAISING A READER SCHOOL CHALLENGE

We have the incredible opportunity to win $5,000 for our school library through a contest called, Raise a Reader School Challenge.  Individual readers are also eligible for great prizes.

The contest is sponsored by the International Reading Association and Parents Magazine.

Beginning March 8, students log their reading minutes as they devour books throughout the spring.  Logging of minutes continues through May 31.

We need every parent to register for this program and log in their minutes from home.  We will also record the minutes read at school.

On March 8, go to this link and register:  RAISE A READER SCHOOL CHALLENGE

If you have questions at any time, check with Mrs. VandenBerg, our school librarian, or your child’s teacher.

Thank you for doing such a great job to raise your child to be a reader and for supporting our school library!

Bustin’ Through Books

bean bagOn February 2, we begin to devote a portion of every day to focused time for reading.  This will be called BUST THROUGH BOOKS BOOT CAMP.

We need your help to get this up and running!  You can help in three different ways:

1.  If you are a DAD, volunteer to spend a day running our boot camp.  It’s easy…and fun.  Requirements:  Sign Up by clicking on this form; Wear Comfy Clothes; Bring your reading material (work and just for fun); SHOW UP WITH A SMILE, sense of humor and your books.  Jeff Wressell, Lily’s Dad, will be heading up the volunteer list.

2.  Donate $1.00 to your child’s classroom.  The money will go toward buying timers and bean bags.  Write:  BUST THROUGH BOOKS on your envelope, along with your child’s name and classroom.  (We will also take used vinyl bean bags and timers)

3.  Donate any well loved books from your home.  We have students who love to learn about non-fiction topics.  If you have any books on the topics listed below, please donate them to our program.  Books can be dropped off in the library with the incredible, wonderful Mrs. VandenBerg!

SOME NEWS FROM THE OFFICE

Good afternoon Georgetown parents!

I have a few things to send out from the office.  A couple are activities from Community Ed and the others are notes from the office.

PE CARES FOOD DRIVE

The P.E. C.A.R.E.S. Food drive will be ending on Wednesday, November 18.  The food this year will be going to the Water of Life Church for their food pantry.  Thanks for all your help in this cause so far and remember to bring in your canned goods by Wednesday.  Also if you know a family that could benefit from the food drive, please call Nicole Poolman, from Water of Life Church at 667-9348.

BOOK FAIR

Our wonderful volunteers from the book fair just wanted to make you aware that if your child ordered a book that was on back order they should receive these orders by the end of the week.  There was a communication error with Scholastic so the orders are coming in a little later than anticipated.  Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

BUS LOOP–PLEASE READ

Parents please make sure you read this message.  It was brought  to our attention from the bus drivers that parents are dropping students off in the back parking lot that adjoins to the Baldwin Street Middle School.  On behalf of the bus drivers and our staff here at Georgetown we ask that any students being dropped off at school be let off in the front loop  by the main entrance to the school.  From here students may walk around the building using the sidewalks to get to their playground.  The bus drivers are especially concerned with the students’ safety as they witnessed a child almost being hit by another car in the parking lot and occasionally the students cut through the bus loop and they are concerned that a student may be hit by a car or a bus.  Thanks for helping us out with this safety issue!
