Two Wonderful Events in One Great Week

This past week, we celebrated two kinds of artists:  creative and writing! Mrs. Brouwer celebrated artists in grades PK through 5 during the Hudsonville Public Schools Art Show on Wednesday night at Park Elementary.  And, Mrs. Heerema, our Gifted and Talent Consultant, help us kick off our writing celebration by taking us to Calvin College’s Young Authors Conference.  To view our creative artists, visit Mrs. Brouwer’s Art Blog. Our writing artists are featured on this slide show.

Special Blog Feature: Peter Pappas About Our Student Writers

We were featured as a “writing school” to check out by Peter Pappas, a national educational consultant. Mr. Pappas left a comment on our school blog about our fabulous student writers and also highlighted us on his blog as a school that publishes student writing!  This was exciting and flattering news to receive on the eve of our upcoming JUST WRITE celebration, May 4-8.

Just Write: Our Books Are Published!

We Have Something to Say...

Our 2nd annual and  HUGE celebration of writing called, “We have something to say…JUST WRITE!” is just four weeks away.  The event takes place during the week of May 4, with different events scheduled each day. Teachers are busy preparing student stories for publication on lockers, hallways, doors, posters, and BOOKS. We are publishing a book for each class, and these will be available through lulu.com. For each book purchased, we will receive $4.00 to put toward our writing program (supplies, author visits, and software).  In addition, you can download a book for free–an important option in these economic times.

We have something to say…

JUST WRITE!

During the week of May 4, we will be celebrating ALL Georgetown writers…grades PK-5.  Since our opening in September 2006, we have been focused on creating a community of readers and writers.  Throughout the school year, we hold mini-celebrations of our work in reading (Reading Counts sponsored by the PTC) and classroom writing celebration (small moments to honor the hard work and successes throughout the year).

Our “We have something to say, JUST WRITE!” celebration brings together all that we have learned about reading and writing as a partnership in learning.  Each student will have a favorite piece of writing posted in the hallway, and in addition, we will be publishing our work online through lulu.com.  Many other special events will be held, including a visit by Shirley Neitzel, the author of many books, including THE JACKET I WEAR IN THE SNOW.

To help you learn more about the author and the books she has written, we have devoted a page to her, found in the tabs at the top of our blog.

Mark your calendars for the week of May 4-8!  Details will be coming!

Just Write: A Celebration in May

We are in our second year of developing our writing skills–both process and craft.  In May, we will be holding our second annual, We have something to say…JUST WRITE!  Celebration.  For this event, each writer (and this includes staff members) selects a piece of writing to publish professionally.  In addition, we post writing around the building and on our blogs.  There are many other events that take place, and details will be shared as the date draws nearer.  In the meantime, I would like to invite you to visit the stories that were published last May on the lulu.com site.  Any of these titles can be purchased or downloaded for free. To view our books at the lulu.com location, simply type Georgetown Elementary into the search area.
