Snow Day Readers ROCK!

Reader11

The best part of the snow days:  Seeing photos of Georgetown kids READING!  Thank you to parents for encouraging your readers and sending the photos my way.   Mrs. VandenBerg (our super librarian) has added your words to your totals.

readers12

I had planned to get another incentive (math) set up and posted today, however, much of my school day included “calendar surgery” to reschedule meetings and teacher observations as well as other odd jobs that are part of being a principal.  Also, the longer I worked with the sunshine coming in the window, the more I thought, “We will be back to normal tomorrow…no worries if I can’t get to this.”  Please, let us be back to normal tomorrow!

For those wondering about how many days we receive before we make up days, the answer is SIX.  Today was day SEVEN.  Our superintendent, Mr. Ceglarek, has been working throughout the day to create a plan to communicate to parents and staff.   Bottom line for all of us who work with kids:  One snow day is magical and romantic, beyond that it is lost instruction time — and we MISS the CHILDREN!

Hoping for normalcy tomorrow,

Mrs. Reagan

Millionaire Club Interest Grows!

Since our post yesterday about our most recent millionaires, Mrs. VandenBerg has received several questions about how to track words for this program.

These students have read 18 MILLION words (collectively) since the fall of 2009:

Linnae, Nathan, Bryce, Aliya, Alison, Austin, Jon, Ryan M, Matthew L., Marisa, Cielle, Ryan Y. (2009-10)

Chloe, Quinn, Matthew L., Ezra, Cam and Hunter (2010-11)

*There are readers who are very very very close to reaching the million mark this spring.  We will honor them later this year!

If your child takes a reading counts quiz and/or completes a book blog, Mrs. VandenBerg keeps tracks of these words.

Any books that are read at home will need to be tracked  by each student on this form:  Million word club form.  Turn this into Mrs. VandenBerg when it is complete and she will add these words to her master list.

Here is some additional information from a prior post:

They read HOW many words?

million

Look at the photo above.  Pictured are students in grades 3-5, Chloe, Quinn, Matthew, Ezra, Cam and Hunter.  If you had to guess how many words they have EACH read in the past few months, would you say:

  • 6000
  • 420.003
  • 560,321
  • 1,000,000
  • If your answer was #4, ONE MILLION WORDS, you are correct!

Each of these Georgetown students has read 1,000,000 words earning them a place in the honorable and highly sought after GEORGETOWN MILLIONAIRES CLUB.  This CLUB was initiated last year with 12 voracious readers who were awarded t-shirts and certificates at the end of the 2009-10 school year.  Please note that Matthew Lawrence has now read 2,000,000 words…and rumor has it that he is closing in on another million!

I thought it would be a great idea to get a photo in the library with these readers surrounded by the books they consume.  However, each time I asked them to say “CHEESE”, one or more had their faces looking into an open book!

    readers

This year they will each sign out the PTC donated NOOK e-reader with a story of their choice. The NOOK will then make it’s way from millionaire to millionaire to millionaire.  We hope these readers can provide feedback on the value of adding more e-readers to our school library in the future.

And for those of you who think it is impossible to read one million words, YOU CAN SAY THAT NO MORE!  Mrs. VandenBerg tracks in school reading for those who do book blogs, reading counts quizzes and other projects for reading.  You can also keep track of your reading at home by using a form created by Mrs. VandenBerg.  You can print this form and complete it at home:  Million word club.

We are hopeful that this provides incentive to read for those students who may be burned out with Reading Counts quizzes.   With the help of Mrs. Roon (Reading Counts Chair) and Mrs. VandenBerg (Librarian), we have made changes to our Reading Counts program this school year.  For those who still  enjoy the Reading Counts program, this gives them yet another way to be rewarded for reading.
