2009-10 Kindergarten Welcome!

On Tuesday, March 17 we held two Kindergarten Round Up meetings at Georgetown.  We welcomed the parents of 101 new students to our building.  If you have an upcoming kindergartener, and you have not yet turned in your registration please do so as soon as possible.  We will continue to take enrollments throughout the spring.

K Round Up

It is March 17 — the day we kick off our first official preparations for the 2009-10 school year with Kindergarten Round Up.  We will have two identical presentations, offered at two different times of the day.  Parents can choose to attend the 10 am or 7 pm session.  Information about the daily schedule, programming, and registration will be shared.  The sessions will be held in the MPRoom, which is just inside the front door.  I am looking forward to welcome kindergarten parents to Georgetown.

Reading Counts Rocks!

From Angie Roon, Reading Counts’ Chair: I just can’t believe that it is already March and that a second Reading Counts party is already over!  Educators from the Public Museum of Grand Rapids shared lots of cool information about space with our students. Students watched a short video that included many remarkable pictures that were taken from space. They were fascinated with being able to touch a meteorite, a melted meteorite, a solar part of a space shuttle, and to see several personal items from our local astronaut hero, Roger B. Chaffee. They were amazed to learn satellites are used for communication. The students were excited to be able to sample dehydrated food just like the astronauts had in space! You would be as surprised as the students to learn why astronauts eat tortillas in space—Just ask your child for the answer!

The next Reading Counts celebration will be May 15 and Kelly Keur has already changed the bulletin board for the theme: ocean life. It will be fun watching the “fish” swim across the board to show 100% of each student’s goal.

Our Reading Counts parties are only successful because of the help from wonderful parents and volunteers. Thank you, parents and volunteers, for your time and your help! (Staci Niebor, Michelle Hinken, Rhonda Fabbro, Shawna Brandt, Michelle Wierenga, Michele DeWinter, Shelly Telfor, Kelly Bartz, and Kelly Keur)

Georgetown Family Service Project

We are a Georgetown family who feels incredibly blessed during this time of economic stress in West Michigan. For this reason, we have decided to share our resources in an area where there is a great need in our school. We are asking, most humbly, and as you are able, if you will join us in this pursuit. We attend Fair Haven Ministries, and through a special project called the Kingdom Assignment inspired originally by Leesa and Denny Bellesi and then replicated in many other ways through a concept called Pay It Forward (as seen on Oprah in 2006).    We have decided to use our money in a similar way to help families in need at our own school.

The greatest need of Georgetown families at this time is for food. Some families are unable to qualify for free or reduced lunches because of their income, but at the same time, the money they do receive is going to pay mortgages and bills. There are also many children who come to school without snacks, leaving them hungry as they are trying to learn.

Up to this point, there has been a group of very committed teachers and staff who have been pooling their own money to address this concern. We are hoping that we can multiply their generous donations through this blog posting.

Again, if you are able, we would appreciate any donations of gift cards to food stores. Meijer, Family Fare, D & W Fresh Market and WalMart come to mind, but there may be others that you can think of. The gift cards can be dropped off at the Georgetown school office at any time during regular school hours (8:30 to 4:00). Please mark any donations as follows: SPRING SERVICE PROJECT. Please know that you can also purchase gift cards through out PTC scrip program. If you have questions about how to do this, contact Carrie Clark-Berry (csclarkberry@comcast.net).

Thank you so much for your consideration and your support of this Spring Service Project. Know that you will be helping our Georgetown families in this difficult time.

Blog Spotlight

I would like to highlight a very special blog this week:  Families that Blog Together, Learn Together.  This site matches Georgetown families with Raey Guang families — the intent of fostering an appreciation and understanding of one anothers family lives.  Our sister school, Raey Guang Elementary, is in Pingtung, Taiwan.

Michele DeWinter, a parent and paraprofessional in our school, is responsible for creating, hosting and managing this blog.  She has matched families and creatively works to overcome the communication barriers (English vs Mandarin).

A Raey Guang teacher, Chia Pin Chen, recently added a class post to our Blogpal site.  The post helps us to learn about their interests–foods, activities, and pets!  Please take time to read the post and leave comments sharing your interests.  In addition, Chia Pin Chen, created a class blog with photos of the children in his class.  This blog is in early stages of development, but very much worth a visit.

We look forward to sharing all that we learn about our friends in Pingtung, Taiwain through our blogs.
