Do you like scavenger hunts?

I have a Valentine’s Day weekend challenge for you! The first blogger to find all the letters of the word “valentine” will win lunch out with me! To participate in this, you simply have to follow these rules:

1. Make a list of the letters:

* V
* A
* L
* E
* N
* T
* I
* N = Megan’s Blog
* E = John’s Blog

2. Go to each of the student blogs and hunt for the letters. (These are found on the Blogpals main site.)

3. When you find a letter, write the student blog name next to each letter. (See the examples I put above next to N and E. These are just examples!)

4. You must post a comment to the school blog.

5. The first person to find all the letters and make a comment, WINS!

AND…the letters do not need to match the letters above.

There are two e’s and two n’s. They must be from different student blogs!

Good Luck…Have Fun…and happy Valentine’s Day!

Mrs. Reagan

Please NOTE: Any of the students in our school can participate! Also, if you are a parent or visitor from another school, you can participate as well. I can’t give you lunch, but we can celebrate your talents on the blog!

Kindergarten Readiness Program

2009/2010:   HPS Kindergarten Readiness Program

Research shows that most children who turn five by December 1 are ready for kindergarten. As a district, Hudsonville Public Schools has many supports in place to ensure that students will be highly successful in school. As an initial step, screening will be conducted in March for children whose birthdays fall between June 1 and December 1. Following the screening, teachers will meet with parents to inform them of their child’s strengths as well as to define readiness areas that can be developed during the months
leading up to kindergarten.
If however, after the screening parents still feel that their “young five” child is not ready to attend kindergarten in the fall, Hudsonville Public Schools will be offering a tuition-based, Kindergarten Readiness Program, on two full days per week located at one or two of our elementary buildings (depending upon enrollment). The Kindergarten Readiness Program will focus on fun, hands-on learning, incorporating Zoo-Phonics, Handwriting Without Tears, and math/literacy skills essential for future school success.

The stars are coming out!

An Update from Mrs. Roon, our Reading Counts Chairperson:

The Reading Counts bulletin board is full of stars!!  Remember, the last day the students can make their goal is Friday, February 27.

Party plans are in the making! The students will be “launching” into outer space for the next Reading Counts Party on Friday, March 13.  Watch for more party details, but at this time aluminum foil, thin mylar ribbon, and regular ribbon are items needed for the party. If you can donate any of these items, they can be dropped off at the library or sent in with your child.  Thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping to make this party a success!

Baby, it’s cold outside!

With the many winter weather advisories issued this past month, we have been faced with the issue of checking the wind chill temperatures daily.  This is a task that Mrs. Ripley and Mrs. Nurenberg take on as our incredible school secretaries.  If you take a peak at their computer desktops, you will see that they have the school WeatherBug data posted to enable them to check the wind chill live for our playground.

When the wind chill temperature drops below zero, we keep the children inside for recess.  Wind chill temperature is “how cold people and animals feel when outside. Windchill is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by wind and cold. As the wind increases, it draws heat from the body, driving down skin temperature and eventually the internal body temperature. Therefore, the wind makes it FEEL much colder. If the temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind is blowing at 15 mph, the wind chill is -19 degrees Fahrenheit. At this wind chill temperature, exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes.”  (Information for the NOAA)

We anticipate that the weather will be much better this week.  However, it will be brisk on the playground. PLEASE dress your child warmly.  And, 5th graders:  Wear the warm stuff!  It is more important to be warm that lookin’ cool!
