Special Blog Feature: Peter Pappas About Our Student Writers

We were featured as a “writing school” to check out by Peter Pappas, a national educational consultant. Mr. Pappas left a comment on our school blog about our fabulous student writers and also highlighted us on his blog as a school that publishes student writing!  This was exciting and flattering news to receive on the eve of our upcoming JUST WRITE celebration, May 4-8.

The Final Week of School, 2014-15

readers

We are entering our final week of school for the 2014-15 school year.  It has been an amazing year — one filled with memories of friendships (new and continued), learning celebrations and school happenings.   We want you to know how much your support means to us — through volunteering in the classrooms, at PTC events and through your support of your child’s learning activities.  Your support of your child’s learning environment makes it possible for our school to reach all learners. Our school is great because of you and your children!

We have many events going on this week.  One of the most important is We Have Something to Say…JUST WRITE!  A celebration of our writing work PK-5.  Please visit your child’s class blog to find out the date, time and details of the event.  Each grade is organizing their celebration to make it appropriate for the age of the students.  While you are visiting our school for JUST WRITE, take time to read the many stories posted on the walls.  We are raising amazing writers who will be able to use their skills to demonstrate their thinking in higher grades, secondary, post high school education and their careers.

Throughout the summer months, I will update our blog with details about the upcoming 2015-16 school year.  Open Houses for next year will be held the week before school begins.  Dates and times are below.

open house

Also…our Library will be open in the summer from 10-12 on Tuesdays.  This is a great time to come and meet teachers and check out books.

School dismisses on Friday at 1 pm.  The children will eat lunch at school before we dismiss them.

Here’s to a fantastic week…filled with sunshine and wrap up activities!

Four Week Countdown: May 11-15, 2015

calendar

There are four weeks remaining until the end of the 2014-15 school year….and these weeks are going to fly by.

You will be receiving emails and see blog posts about upcoming events.  Teachers are exceptionally busy staying on top of M-STEP testing (new…stressful and time consuming for both students and teachers), finishing up important curriculum instruction AND completing final assessments for end of the year report cards.  If you are unsure about an event, check the blog.  If you don’t see it on the class blog, email or call your child’s teacher.

The final week of school will be our JUST WRITE celebration.  In the past, this has been mid-May, however we had to move it due to the state testing that now takes up the final 8 weeks of school for grades 3-5.    Tours for each grade will be as follows:  Grades 3, 4, 5 will be on JUNE 1; Grades K,1,2 will be on JUNE 2.  Teachers will soon be getting the time of the JUST WRITE tours out to you so you can put this down on your calendars.

Below is a snapshot of some of the events for the coming week.

Wishing every mother a WONDERFUL Mother’s Day weekend!  Save those precious notes and cards.  You’ll want to pull these out and re-read them when your children are older and too embarrassed to share such sweet thoughts and sentiments with you!  And…if you get a moment, watch this video segment, #iwishmymotherknew.

Will it feel like SPRING this week?

I hope so!  And, even if it doesn’t, we keep moving along with our spring like events at Georgetown.  Some signs of spring that can be spotted on our school calendar:  Teacher Appreciation Week (always a spring event sponsored by PTC) and Field Trips (always listed in green).

Our school is also starting to look very spring like with LOST & FOUND items filled with spring jackets and baseball caps rather than boots, mittens and winter jackets.  If you look closely at the lockers and walls, you will also see student writing start to appear in preparation for our Annual Just Write Celebration (May 12-16).  Just Write is a celebration of all the writing our students have done this school year.  It will be a time that parents, friends, grandparents and other special people in your lives can tour the building to read pieces of writing on display by every single writer in the building.   The tour schedule is below and more information will also be on your child’s class blog.

Have a wonderful weekend…and a great week!

The British have Arrived!

Hope/Liverpool Student Teachers May 2012

It is that time of the year when we host student teachers from Hope Liverpool University.  Each May term, Hope College (Holland, Michigan) participates in an exchange program with Hope Liverpool.  Just as we host their teacher candidates, the Liverpool schools host Hope College teacher candidates.

The goal of the program is to help these future teachers experience global teaching and learning settings and through that experience understand the commonalities and differences in helping all learners to achieve.

Over the past four years, we have hosted 30 student teachers.   This year, we will host 15 teacher candidates and they will be placed in grades 1-5.  Some student teacher names your child may be referencing:  Miss Arblaster, Miss Daniell, Miss Laverick, Miss McDermott, Miss Turner and Miss Walters.

If you come to visit during our JUST WRITE celebrations, be sure to introduce yourself and welcome them to Georgetown.
