Our Final Week of School June 6-10

With mixed emotions, I write our final blog update for the 2015-16 school year.  The students and teachers in our building have worked extremely hard this year to BE NICE, WORK HARD and LEARN WELL.  While doing this, we have created class families that bring together a new group of learners in September who have made new friends nine months later when the year wraps up.  While we are excited to start our summer schedules, it is hard to say goodbye to friends and teachers.

This week will be full of end of the year celebrations to help us close out one grade and prepare for the next.  Be prepared for bags of belongings to arrive home from the classroom and the locker.

The schedule for this week is below.  Please make sure that you check your child’s class blog forIMG_7413 schedule notes specific to that classroom.  All students will be dismissed to the busses at 12:50 on Friday so that we are ready for the 1 pm bus departure.  Please plan on your child eating lunch at school on the final day.

I want to give a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to our GIRLS on the RUN Team.  They ran their 5K race on Friday and according to their coaches, Elizabeth Sayers, Linda Fuzi and Holly Williams, they did an AMAZING JOB!

As I wrap up this post, I want to thank all of you — parents of our students — for your support this school year.  We want you to know that it is impossible for us to do all that we do without your support at the classroom level and school wide level.

In the next few days, I will be posting information about our Reading Counts winners, Millionaires for our Millionaire Club and other highlights for the week.

Week 4: September 28-October 2

We have had absolutely amazing weather to start the school year and this makes such a difference in helping us to establish routines for learning and working together at school.   The nice weather guarantees outside recess — time for the children to move, run, play and socialize with their peers.  Knowing that the weather will soon shift to rain, sleet, snow and cold we appreciate these beautiful fall days even more.

IMG_9076Our WALK•A•THON weather was PERFECT!  If you attended the event, you saw all 645 (students/staff) walking and running around our school track for 2+ hours.  Amanda Impens (Chairperson) and her staff of volunteers set up a water station and a series of obstacle courses (Ninja Warrior theme) for the participants.  It was a perfect day for a well-organized and fun event.  A video of the event highlights can be found below the calendar.

The funds raised by our students (and graciously donated by you and your family/friends), go toward supporting our school family social events and learning programs.  Some events:  Popcorn Days (all school, once a month), Reading Counts (motivational reading program and prizes), Raz-Kids (online reading program for K-3), Library Books, Prizes for Millionaire Word Club, Prizes for MobyMax Winners (another learning incentive program, GAGA PIT set up (Playground game), materials and equipment for MUSIC, PE, ART; Frames for our permanent student artwork exhibit, and MUCH MUCH MORE.    If you ever have a question about how to be involved in PARENT CLUB (beyond donating money), please attend a meeting or contact a board member.  All contact information and meeting dates found on Parent Club tab above.

WALK•A•THON winners will be announced this week via school announcement and posted on the blog.  We are still in the process of counting money and tallying results.

Our first POPCORN FRIDAY is October 2.  The popcorn is made with a nut-free oil.  If your cartoon-popcorn-1041child cannot have popcorn for any reason, please notify your child’s teacher.

Friday is also HOMECOMING DAY.  All staff/students will be dressing in BLUE/GOLD EAGLE’s Wear/Colors.  The SUPER FANS from Hudsonville High School will visit our school at 10:3o to show our students what it means to be an EAGLE FAN!  We are hoping for nice weather so we can meet them outside for this event.

Finally, another highlight of Friday:  THE HOMECOMING GAME and FUN FEST aredunk tank this Friday, October 2.  Events include 50/50 Raffle and a Staff Dunk Tank and much more.  Check out this flyer 2015-HEF Fun Fest poster for more event details.  Our two PE Teachers (Mrs. VanKoevering and Mrs. Nienhuis will be first in the DUNK TANK at 4:30 on Friday.  To have a shot and getting them in the tank, be there with your warmed up pitching arm!  They love to be in the water, so we need you there to make this happen!

Have a great weekend!

PTC Fundraising Needs

It’s really quite easy to raise money for Georgetown. Money raised helps fund field trips, assemblies, Reading Counts, Just Write, classroom materials; as well as art, music, gym, and library expenditures. Thanks for your help!  Click on this PDF for a paper version to print for your refrigerator. Fundraising Flyer 2011-2012

Popcorn Money Request: The PTC is happy to help fund “Popcorn Fridays” throughout the school year. The past couple of years, we have asked for monetary donations to help cover the cost of supplies and the annual cleaning of the popcorn machine. If you can donate just $1 per student to this fund, it would be greatly appreciated. Please send the money to school in an envelope marked “popcorn money” to insure its proper fund assignment. Thanks!!!

The Walk-a-Thon: Our annual Walk-a-Thon is in two days! This year the event will have a “green” theme. It is scheduled for September 21 and 22.

NEW FUNDRAISER for 2011-2012: A Coin War (Replacing Classroom Basket Fundraiser)

This year we thought it might be fun to try a new spring fundraiser: a Coin War. So start saving your coins (but no pennies!) for our competition. Money will go toward classroom learning materials. The collection will occur the week of February conferences: February 27th through March 1st.

Papergator: Don’t forget to bring your newspapers, magazines, old phone books, etc. to the Papergator dumpster in the parking lot. The more we bring, the more money we make for Georgetown!

Spartan Cash for Labels: We receive cash for any UPC symbols clipped from Spartan brand products that you purchase from your local Family Fare and D&W stores. Just clip and collect UPC Symbols from any Spartan brand products (refer to the sample UPC symbol shown here). You can send any collected labels to school with your child, or drop them off in a special drop box that is located outside the office (next to the Box Top and Campbell Soup Label drop boxes).

Campbell Soup Labels: We receive points from certain product labels (Campbell Soup, V8, Spaghetti Os, Pop Secret, etc.) which the school can redeem for items in a catalog. In the past we have redeemed points for playground balls, pencil sharpeners for classrooms and last year we got a wii to encourage students to raise money for the Walk-a-Thon. The orange “Labels for Education” can be brought to the drop box outside the office or sent to school with your child.

Box Tops: Remember to save the little “Box Tops for Education” rectangular labels on various food and household items. Information about competitions will be posted at a later date.

Meijer 1 Card: If you shop at Meijer, please consider getting a Meijer 1 card to scan when making purchases; or you can add Community Rewards to a Meijer credit card. Our school’s organization code is 402529. This site:  MEIJER will walk you through the steps to get your card and help you make your purchases count for Georgetown!

Target “Take Charge of Education:” If you have a Target Red Card, please be sure your card is linked with Georgetown. One percent of your purchases will be donated to our school! Go to the following page to enroll… TARGET
