School Wide Math Fact Fluency Focus

In late spring of last year, our students grade 3-5 were assessed with the new online state test called the M-STEP.  This test measures all students across the state to compare their academic abilities in math and reading (grades 3-5) and science (gr 4) and social students (grade 5).

While watching our students take their first online test, we made detailed notes of systematic instructional changes to implement to better prepare our students for this coming spring’s M-STEP assessment.

One area that stuck out for mathematics was math fluency – the ability to complete basic math facts accurately and quickly.  The students who had strong math fluency were able to solve simple problems quickly and devote the bulk of their math assessment time to the higher levels of work needed for reading through the multiple steps of the math problem.

We have taken on this intervention in grades 1-5 so that by the time our students reach grade 3, they are strong in addition and subtraction facts.

In order to become fluent in math facts, children must practice everyday for 5-10 minutes.  We mathfactsproare building in as much time as possible in school through math lessons, intervention groups, multiple math apps along with one in particular called MATHFACTSPRO .  We like this program because it tracks student progress over the year at school and home.

Great features of this online practice for math facts:

  • Each student’s program is individualized based on the facts needing practice.
  • Students who know their math facts are more confident math students and have greater success in math.
  • Online math fact practice is more effective than paper flashcards.  This online program provides immediate feedback (correct/incorrect) and adjusts the level based on student needs.

How does my child use MATHFACTSPRO?

  •   After signing in, start practicing.
  •   The program will stop once your child has gotten 50-100 facts correct. (Pre-set by each teacher)
  •   Your child will see a chart of their fact progress – and you are able to view this as well.
  •   GOAL :  5-10 minutes of  MATHFACTSPRO each day for homework.  Teachers can check the program to determine who is doing their math homework each night.  Parents can also monitor progress.

login

Thank you for your support of your child’s learning through this simple and effective homework practice.  This is one skill that goes a long way toward building math confidence and it is as simple as daily practice.

We will update you more throughout the next few weeks on other interventions we are putting in place to help our students be more successful readers, spellers, writers, mathematicians and more skilled at showing what they know on the M-STEP test.

Mrs. Reagan

NOTE:  Please do not schedule any vacations or appointments for your grade 3-5 student on these days.  Dates to note:

  • Planning for Enrollment Growth

As some of you may be aware, in November Hudsonville Public Schools (the District) purchased Heritage Christian School’s current building.  To consider future possible uses of this building, the District is conducting a series of focus groups with randomly selected parents and staff as well as meeting with both student and community groups.  Additionally, the District will hold two Town Hall meetings open to the entire community.  These Town Hall meetings will take place on February 4 and February 5 at 7:00 PM in our High School Auditorium.  We are hopeful that many parents and community members will be able to hear the possibilities and participate in providing valued feedback.  If possible, please join us for this important discussion.

    Hudsonville Community Members,

In 2011, you overwhelmingly approved a school bond to build a new competition pool and renovate our current pool/fitness facilities.  Renovation of our main high school campus will result in the following list of enhancements to the current pool and adjacent fitness areas: new family changing areas, new locker rooms, a new cardio fitness room, and an updated weight room.

Construction and demolition of our current pool/fitness facilities will begin Friday, April 3rd, 2015.  The timeline for completion of our new competitive swimming facility and renovations of our old competitive space will be the fall of 2015.  Demolition and construction will result in the temporary closure of the locker rooms with limited access to the pool.

Community morning and weekend events will be canceled.  Our A.M. lap, Saturday open swim, and morning community basketball will be canceled until the completion of the locker room area.  As a result of the spring and summer construction, we will postpone our swimming lesson programming for the summer of 2015.  Limited summer competitive programming will still remain while the pool area is being renovated.  Hudsonville Community Education will offer two sections of lessons in the winter and early spring to offset a reduction in other program offerings.

With the new and renovated spaces, we look forward to offering these fun activities:

    • A.M. open/lap swim

    • Saturday afternoon open swim

    • Noontime lap swim on weekdays

    • Adult water aerobics classes during the day

    • Swimming lessons during the week

    • Age Group Swim Team (HEAT)

    • USA swimming and diving

    • Masters swimming

    • Cardio and weight room access

If you have any questions, please contact Ian Kobes, Pool Director, at 669-1500, ext. #20243.

Four Weeks to Go: May 14, 2012

It is our 34th week of school — just four weeks away from summer vacation.  This week is one of my absolute favorites of the year, the celebration of our writers.  We have worked all year long create just right stories to be displayed all over our building: lockers, walls, doors and windows.

Each grade has a designated time for tours…and all of you are invited!  This year, we have integrated art work into our celebration.  You will be astounded by the pieces produced by our third graders with the help of Mrs. Brouwer and their teachers.  Please come to share this celebration with us.  We promise you will be amazed by our writing.

We also have field trips, Marco’s Pizza Night and the PTC Mother/Daughter event this week too!

I would like to extend warm wishes for a happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful care givers of children and all things family.  I hope you have a wonderful day and get celebrated for all you do for those you love.

BLOG BITS 3/31/11

HAPPY SPRING BREAK GEORGETOWN PARENTS!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……  WOO~HOO it is vacation time!!!  Need we say any more???  It has been a very good week here.  Busy, but good.  We went out with a REAL BANG with the talent show today.  Lots of fun and excitement!  It was another good show as usual.  Well for any of you who are traveling have a safe trip and we will be looking forward to seeing everyone when we all return from Spring  Break.  Enjoy your time off!  : )

A NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT……….  Over the past several years the number of students attending  Hudsonville Public Schools has grown significantly.  During the past eighteen months we have been exploring options to address this growth.  Following a lengthy process of study and community input, the Board of Education unanimously approved a bond proposal to bring to the voters.  While this request does not raise the millage rate, it is a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of our growing K-12 student population.

Please join us for a community gathering to review this proposal that will go before the voters on May 3, 2011.   Location: Hudsonville High School Auditorium  (5037 32nd Ave)   Date: Tuesday, April 19.    Time: 7:00pm.  Thank you!

MAY 3 BOND ELECTION……. We are so fortunate to be in a school community which is growing. Over the past 5 years, Hudsonville Public Schools has
grown by 604 students. This trend is not new to Hudsonville as our enrollment has almost tripled over the last 25 years.  In an effort to address the need for additional classroom space, our Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to go before voters with a bond request. The proposal to be voted on May 3 calls for:
•New 9+ building on the existing high school site
•New South Elementary located on Greenly Street
•New competition pool and fine arts auditorium
•New transportation facility
•Reconfiguring the Freshman Campus to an Early Childhood Center
•Technology upgrades to all school buildings
•Athletic upgrades at Baldwin, Riley, and High School
Since the district is part of the School Bond Revolving Fund (SBRF), which the state makes available to rapidly growing districts, we will be able to build the facilities and improvements without a millage increase. Currently, the districts levies  7.0 mills for debt retirement and the rate will remain at 7.0 mills. The total cost of the proposal will be $82,000,000.00. If  you have questions please visit our website, www.hudsonvillepublicschools.org or call our superintendent, Nick Ceglarek,  616-669-1740 ext 1.

Well we had a pretty uneventful week here at Georgetown.  Now don’t take that wrong……. that is not a bad thing!  Just smooth sailing!  : )   Drum roll please…… ONLY 4 more school days until Spring Break! YIPPEE ~~~~    One more thing, DO NOT FORGET about our 5th Grade fundraiser breakfast this Saturday at Vitale’s!  You may purchase tickets at the door for $7 each.  It will be held from 9am to 11 am.

TALENT SHOW NEWS…….. Remember this will be next Thursday, March 31.  If your child will be performing you will receive something home to let you know at which performance they will be in.  We are having two shows, one at 9:15 am and one at 1:15 pm.  Also do not forget that if you are unable to make  this, Mrs. Reagan records both shows and posts them on our school blog so you will not have miss it!

YEARBOOKS…….. Your student should have brought home their yearbooks home this week.  The Office just wants to let you know that we have “extra” yearbooks for sale in the office.  These will be sold for $10 per yearbook. They will be available on a first come, first serve basis.  If you will be writing a check, please make it payable to “GEORGETOWN ELEMENTARY”.

Visitors from London

ferrylane

This week, Amy and Abena from Ferry Lane Primary in London, visited our school blog.   They were reading our post about PJ Day and Popcorn Day and left this comment:

You are so lucky. We’re going to take a plane to America tonight to come and join you. Only joking, but if we had the chance,  we would.

I wrote them back and thanked them for leaving a comment on our blog.  I also told them that we would welcome them for PJ Day, but that would be an awfully long trip just to wear PJ’s to school.    It might be easier for them to have their own PJ Day at their own school, what do you think?

As I looked through their blog, I noticed that each of them (as  well as other writers in their class) have published poems.   Click this link to read ABENA’s poem, and this link to read AMY’s poem.

I also told Amy and Abena that London is one of my favorite cities in the world.london Maybe they will visit our blog again and share pictures of London with us.

If you want to visit their blog, click on this link FERRY LANE and say hello from Hudsonville, Michigan USA.

Check Out Our Book Blogs!

As a part of our school-wide reading program, we provide time for our students to read everyBB2 day.  We also provide books that are just right in terms of level, interest and genre.  The teachers work closely with Mrs. VandenBerg, our librarian, to match books to readers and to motivate readers to READ MORE.

BB1Mrs. VandenBerg has been instrumental is encouraging readers to share their reviews of books through book blogs.  Each reader is encouraged to write a short review of the book.  This review is posted to the library blog and on the classroom teacher’s blog.

Readers who are interested in earning points toward Reading Counts goals can chose this option over taking tests for points.  Readers who aren’t interested in earning points but want to share a great book to read, select book blogging as an option.  Many teachers have clarified this goal on their blogs.

Our goal at Georgetown is simple:

RAISE READERS WHO ENJOY READING THROUGH TIME TO READ AND THE DESIRE TO PASS ALONG READING RECOMMENDATIONS TO OTHERS.

The ability to read and write provides the ultimate foundation for doing well across all content areas and prepares our learners for their future!

The books in our library, classrooms and guided book room continue to grow with support from our PARENT CLUB (which we could not live happily without), parent donations and district curriculum support.

Geeky Holiday Gift Ideas

As you prepare for the upcoming gift giving and receiving season, I wanted to pass along some ideas to help you grow your readers and writers…both young (that would be you) and younger!  These ideas come from one of my favorite sites, CHOICE LITERACY, which is an invaluable resource for us at Georgetown.

petethecateA book for all ages with a valuable lesson on adjusting to ‘unpredictableness’ of life is Pete the Cat.  My favorite youtube video shows a precious 4ish girl reading to her younger sister.  There are even adorable Pete the Cat stuffed animals–I have one of these on my Christmas list!

A few more ideas for readers include:  a very cool Book Light and $5 books paired with a stuff animal available through Kohl’s Kids Cause.

If you have a writer in your life, you should consider Autobiography in a Box or the Writers Tool Kit.

Readers who like to construct could build a book clock as a gift for someone they love: Book Clock Project

nookcolorAnd, the ultimate literacy tech gift is an ereader–although they are $$$$ on the gift giving end.  If you have some extra $ and want to bring reading alive in a tech rich way, you may want to consider a NOOK or KINDLE for your favorite reader.  A site to check out if you are comparing the ereaders is edukindle.  An ereader has been on my list for two years…but the budget has a different list of priorities!  If you get one for the holidays, I would love to play with it (under supervision, of course).clock

In preparation for anyone who might accuse me of slighting the math geeks out there, I do have a gift or two for consideration.   Don’t all math geeks need an equation clock?  It’s available through Cafe Press. Another one of my favorite sites, Giftsforageek has one of kind t-shirts like these:

math tshirts

ipadAnd, of course, if you want to be the total geek gift giver, get moving on an ipad which would allow you to read magazines, newspapers and do quadratic equations…all in separate apps! I did read a blog post announcing the availability of ipads at TJ Maxx stores for $399.  My thought:  amazing and interesting Apple or TJ Maxx strategy AND price point if this is true!

Whether you spend $5 or more, enjoy giving a gift that your geek will love!
