Moving into October, Week 5

We have had absolutely amazing weather to kick off the 2013-14 school year.  The first week of October (our 5th week of school) looks to be a continuation of this pleasant weather pattern….and you won’t hear complaints from the Georgetown team!  This nice weather boosts everyone’s mood AND allows for outdoor recess (rather than indoor).

This incredible weather pattern allowed us to have one of the most beautiful days for our WALKATHON.  It was held last week Thursday, 9-26-13.  We had many parents and grandparents join us as we walked around the track.  Mrs. Impens and her team created a festive and fun event for all 660 participants.  If you have not yet turned in your WALKATHON donations, please do so tomorrow (Monday).     We are currently at $7000…and hope to earn $8000 more so that we can watch Mr. Rob, Mr. Gort, Mr. Bowen, Mr. Bialochowski and Mr. Kooiker sumo wrestle for the international sumo wrestling championship!

Our school photographer, Malachi Hollis, captured some amazing photos of the day.  These are featured in a video below.

Our week ahead is busy with fire safety lessons, Vision and Hearing screenings run byt the Ottawa County Health Department for select grades, a pizza night AND it ends with our first POPCORN DAY!  I want you to know that POPCORN FRIDAYS are very popular elevating the popcorn poppers to hero status!

Welcome Fall Equinox: Week 4

Our fourth week of school opens with Fall Equinox — day and night in both hemisphere’s will be nearly equal.    And as you know, soon we will be experiencing less daylight and cooler weather. The youtube video below shows how the movement of the sun looks from space.

Our week ahead includes the ANNUAL WALK•A•THON.  Please contribute to this very important event.  It is our only all school fundraiser — and the money earned funds events and tech tools for the 2013-14 school year.

A special post about the walk•a•thon will post separately soon.

Have a great week!

Week 3: September 16-20

const

It’s our third week….already!   Routines and procedures are very well established due to a great community of learners and staff.

If your child is still not eating lunch, please let your child’s teacher know so that this can be passed along to lunch staff.  It takes awhile for our youngest learners to get used to the lunchroom and we want to make sure we are aware so we can provide extra TLC as necessary.  We add on extra time as needed.  Lunch is important…so please keep us posted.

We kick off the week with PICTURE DAY!  You will see the final results of the photos in late October.  A retake day will be scheduled for those who are absent or need another session.  Photos will be taken in the library.

Tuesday of this week is National Constitution Day — an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the writing of the Constitution.  Each classroom will discuss this historical document on Tuesday in a way that is appropriate to the age group/grade.

We also have another PIZZA NIGHT.  This week…MARCOS.  When you order your family pizza, provide a teacher name.  The class with the most pizza’s ordered under the teacher name will earn a pizza lunch on Marcos.  A portion of all profits goes back to our school PTC — and this money goes toward funding family activities.  Our first Pizza Night was with JET’s.  Winning class:  MRS. WALENTA’s 4th Graders.

At the end of the week, we kick off our one and only PTC all school fundraiser:  THE Trek for Tech Tools WALK-A-THON.  The Walk-a-thon takes place on September 26.  Each student is asked to raise money (asking friends and family to donate money for laps walked at school) with this money funding all of our events this year.  The events are run and managed by parents with the goal of supporting the school/family relationship and supporting learning in the classroom.  Prizes are awarded to top earners at each grade and individual awards.  Details for this will be arriving home soon.   Watch your child’s backpack…blog posts and emails.  This is our single most important fundraiser…and your donations are needed and appreciated!

Have a great week!

Week 36: May 28-June 1, 2013

mem day

We open the school year with Labor Day weekend and close on the heels of the Memorial Day holiday.  Memorial Day is our most solemn holiday — a time for us to remember those who have served and those who are serving today and tomorrow.

We have just 8 days of school remaining to our 2012-13 school year.  The days will be busy with final assessments for June report cards, field trips, locker and desk clean out.  There will also be field days and other various end of the year traditional activities.  Your child’s class blog will provide the most up to date information about these events.

Below is a snap shot of our event this coming week.  Be sure to visit BIGGBY on Tuesday from 6-9pm.  There will be several staff members serving as Barista’s!

Have a great week!

Week a-a-a-a-choooo 35!

Do you feel like you’re looking through green colored glasses?  Are your eyes itchy and your nose sneezy?  If so, you are suffering from spring allergies…and it is a miserable season.  Many of our students (your kids) have watery eyes, headaches, and all the other symptoms that go along with intense allergen exposure.  ACHOO is heard in every classroom!

Highlights of the week ahead are show below.  We open with 5th grade safety White Caps Game and wrap up with our school carnival.  The carnival is sponsored by our PTC and it is a great time for families to play games, eat candy corn and socialize together.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend weather!

Week 34: May 13-17, 2013

It’s the middle of May which means teachers are racing against the clock to get through necessary learning material before the school year ends.    Your children may be talking about online math tests, MEAP prep work and year end assessments for reading, writing, science and social studies.  All of these assessments need to be completed so teachers can mark report cards for the final time this year.  At the same time, we are busy preparing for next year with new enrollments, class list work and trainings for new Common Core Curriculum and Testing.  Spring time is very, very busy!

We welcome our HOPE LIVERPOOL student teachers and end the week with one of our favorite PTC sponsored events:  POPCORN DAY!

Have a great weekend…and Happy Mother’s Day to all the fabulous mother’s out there!

Week 33: Sunshine and Dandelions!

Kaylin and Sophia’s Dandelion Bouquets

The rain followed by sunshine provided a boost to our moods and dandelion growth.   If you haven’t received a bouquet this spring, stop by Georgetown during recess.  Our expert flower arrangers will be happy to make your day!

Spring time also brings field trips…and you can see a few are on our schedule for this week.   Please be sure to check your child’s class blog for details about the trip.

Enjoy the sunshine!

May is Coming!

Even if our weather pattern has not leveled out to spring trends, it helps to know that May starts this week!

The weather will be the talk of the school…especially if it hits 80 degrees on Wednesday, as predicted.  This will be our quietest week school-wide.  Our four weeks in May and the final week in June are very busy with a variety of different spring events.

Have a great week!

Week 31: April 22-26, 2013

The final week in April brings our DISTRIC T ART SHOW — a celebration of our amazing art program for our K-12 students.   We will be displaying unbelievable pieces of student work at the Hudsonville City Hall, 3275 Central Ave.   Georgetown Artist’s special artist reception night is Tuesday from 5:30-7:30 pm.  You can also view the art pieces throughout the day any day next week.   This video (created by our Mrs. Brouwer) gives you a sneak peak into the art display.

In addition to the art show, we will celebrate our STAR secretaries/administrative assistants on Wednesday.  Mrs. Angie Ripley and Mrs. Doni Nurenberg are absolutely the best in the entire universe!

Have a wonderful weekend and a great week!
