Morning Drop Off Request

If you drive your child to school in the morning, use the front lot for drop off.  Do not drop your child off in the BUS LOOP area.  This is for busses only.

When your child arrives to school, s/he needs to walk directly to the playground.  Explain to your child that s/he cannot go through the building to the playground — all students must walk from the front loop to their playgrounds.

The front door can be used if:

  1. It is raining outside.
  2. Your child arrives after 8:45 am.

Thank you for your help with this!

WALK LIKE A PENGUIN

iceIt’s coming…snow and ice.  At Georgetown, we specialize in ICE — much of this due to its location — allowing the wind to blow over the snow all day long.

Our AMAZING Mr. Rob salts at regular intervals (early morning, late morning and early afternoon) but keep in mind two critical factors:   1) Wind can blow the salt away; 2) Salt is not effective if the temperature/wind chill is 10 degrees or less.

The most dangerous areas on our property:  Parking Lots and Walkways.  Because we do our best to limit the ice and because it is impossible to completely eliminate the ice, we encourage everyone to be more penguin like in the winter.   To learn how to walk like a penguin, check out this info-gram.
*Note:  You do not need to dress like a penguin for the walk to work.  It does help for fashion points, however.

Week 16: January 4-8, 2016

2016 new year

I hope your holidays were wonderful!  While you were gone, our internal building entrance was remodeled.  When you walk into the building, there are now three doors in lock position that prevent visitors from entering the academic area.  All visitors will be buzzed into the office to sign children in or out as well as for volunteering purposes.

Safe Secure Entrance

The two sign in areas are unchanged.  Parents who are picking up/dropping off sign in at the front desk facing Mrs. Hoekstra, one of our secretaries.  If you are picking your child up early or for an appointment, wait in the office for you child to be called to the office.

Parents who are volunteering sign in at a table across from Mrs. Hoekstra.  Once you are signed in and applied a name tag, Mrs. Hoekstra or Mrs. Ripley (our amazing secretarial team) will buzz you into the academic area of our building.

Safe Secure Entrance-2

We ask for your patience while we learn to operate and manage the new entrance system.  The purpose of this new system is to help us maintain a safe/secure entrance system for your children while we work with them daily.  If one of us (the secretaries or myself)  are not at the door when you arrive, we are likely in the Health Room with an ill or injured child.  Please be patient — we will be at the door as soon as possible.

A snapshot of our first week of 2016 is below.  We have POPCORN DAY on Friday — a great way to ease back into school after our holiday break.

Welcome back to school!  I can’t wait to get back and get the new year started!

Georgetown: New Facebook Page

facebook

I have created a new Facebook page for our school.  Our former page was linked to my personal Facebook account which I have closed — an effort on my part to start limiting my screen time for the new year.

The new page is located at this address:  www.facebook.com/georgetown.hps

Each time the blog is updated (or our school twitter feed @georgetownelem), our school Facebook will also be updated.

Kindergarten and Staff Coin Drive for JDRF

jdrfDuring the month of November, Mrs. Stutz’s kindergarten class engaged in a coin drive for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.  Emmie Simpson, a kindergartener has Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes — and the money earned in honor of Emmie will go toward research to help improve treatment for those with diabetes and hopefully eliminate the disease entirely.  Emmie, her mom and Mrs. Stutz were featured on Miranda WOTV4Women to recognize this cause.

Together, Mrs. Stutz, her kindergarteners and the Georgetown Staff raised $1,000 for JDRF.  We have a huge heart for all the children at our school who are learning to live with a chronic disease and we’re hopeful our efforts make their lives better.

A Post from Aiden Henderson: Remember Niger

Hello Georgetown Families,

My name is Aiden Henderson.  I am in fifth grade in Mrs. Walenta’s class.  I have a passion for a non-profit organization called Remember Niger.

I first heard of Remember Niger through our church’s sponsorship.  nigerRemember Niger’s primary goal is to provide quality education to the Nigerian children in Niger, Africa.  With an education, they can provide for their country and make their country stronger economically. Schooling is very important to us kids here in the states, and it is very important to them too.  I was wondering if you would be interesting in supporting these kids in Niger and put a smile on their face.

This program is currently in need of money to purchase Mosquito nets, school supplies, desks, sponsorships of students, etc.  If you would like to support this organization, visit their website:  REMEMBER NIGER  Next, click on one of these links: ALTERNATIVE GIVING CATALOG or GENERAL DONATION.

If you have any questions, email my mom, Mary Henderson at rmhenderson5302@sbcglobal.net

Thank you, Aiden Henderson.

News From The Office….

We want to say thank you to all the parents and students who brought in gifts to us before break. We appreciate it so much and we are so fortunate to work with such wonderful families here at Georgetown! We hope everyone has a great Holiday break! Enjoy your time with family and friends and we will see you back on January 4.

Gifts Of Appreciation….

Christmas is a great time to recognize those special people – teachers, coaches, counselors, bus drivers, and other staff members who are a positive influence in your child’s life and school experience. One way to show your appreciation is by making a donation in their name to the Hudsonville Education Foundation. It’s a gift that will continue to give. When a donation is made to the Foundation, the name of the honoree will be posted in each building and notification of your donation will be sent to them.

The Hudsonville Education Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that was founded to enrich and enhance education in Hudsonville Public Schools by funding projects and programs that will directly impact Hudsonville students. The HEF is managed by The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.

Your donation will not only honor a staff member but will help fund future grants that will directly impact Hudsonville students. See the attached flyer here for the form to be filled out with your donation.Gifts of Appr-Dec2015

New Year…New Entrance

entThe new year will mean a new safe, secure entrance for our building — made possible through voter approval of our August School Bond Proposal.

Features of the new entrance:

  • Increased visibility of the lobby area from the office.
  • Secured lobby area.   All visitors go through the office.
  • Electronic control of all doors from the office.  Visitors will be buzzed into and out of the office area.

Student Drop Off:  All students must go to their playground area if they arrive between 8:30-8:45 am.  No longer can they walk through the front door and through the building to their playgrounds.  EXCEPTION:  Students who come for breakfast may come in the front door.

Student Pick Up:  If you pick you child up after school, the lobby area will be a bit smaller.  Wait patiently in the lobby, and children will come to the front and exit the new doors and enter the lobby area to meet you.
