HAPPY FRIDAY GEORGETOWN PARENTS!!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……..Can you believe it??!  We have just completed our second week of school already!  We here in the office feel like we are running like a fine oiled machine.  Maybe that is what happens after 6 years?  I must say also that our Kindergartners are doing a fabulous job!  They seem to be handling all day every day kindergarten very well.  Kudos to Kindergartners!  : )

PICTURE DAY……..  Is MONDAY!!!  September 17.  Please remember to send in your order form with your student.  Do not worry if your student is going to be a late arrival on Monday, they can go and have their picture taken when they get here if there class has already gone.

NOTES TO TEACHERS, ETC……….  This is just a friendly suggestion to help out our wonderful teachers.  When sending in notes to the teachers it is EXTREMELY helpful if you DATE the note.  Sometimes inadvertently the teacher will not remove the note from folders or leave it posted up and if there is not date on it, they can get confused as to which day the note is for.  Thank you.

LUNCH INFO……..  I am attaching the SEPTEMBER hot lunch menu and a deposit slip for you.  Remember too that you are able to make deposits to your student’s lunch account online now.  You will need their student ID # which you can get from our office.  The website for online lunch access is www.sendmoneytoschool.com   Sept. 2012 Elementary Menu       Deposit Slip (1)

HEF FAMILY FUN FEST FUNDRAISER………..  has been rescheduled for FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28.  It will take place at the Varsity Stadium from 4:30pm to 7:00 pm.  There will be lots of fun activities for the kids.    Hope to see you all there!!  : )

P.E. NEWS……..  Once again the Hudsonville Elementary P.E. teachers are gearing up for the Turkey Trot!  This race involves all the Hudsonville Elementary school students and families.  The race will be held on October 23 and more information will be coming home soon.  We are looking for businesses to sponsor our Turkey Trot race.  If you have a large or small business and you would like some more advertising this could be for you.  We have over 1,000 runners and families that would see your ad!  Please let Mrs. Nienhuis or Mrs. VanKoevering (your P.E. teachers) know if you are interested and have more questions.

PTC NEWS……….  The PTC is still looking for some help with some events for the school.  They really need volunteers to step up and help out with these fun activities for the kids otherwise the events may not be able to take place.  : (  These are the areas where they are looking for help:  Chairpersons for both the Book Fairs, Conference Dinners for Staff, Box Top Competitions, Mother/Son Event, Father/Daughter Event, and 5th Grade Celebration.  If you are able and interested please contact Stacey Alexander at 616.914.6896.  Thank you

Happy Spring Break Georgetown Parents!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…….  Well we made it!!  Spring Break is here!!  Yes, I know the day is not over, but I look at it this way…. we showed up today so officially we have made it to Spring Break!  What a day we had!  The Talent Show was fabulous as usual and the kids are really excited about having a few days off.  Remember that school resumes on Monday, April 9 and the first Friday we are back to school, which is Friday, April 13, that will be a TUESDAY/THURSDAY PK/K day!

LUNCH INFORMATION……… Here is the April lunch menu and a new deposit slip if you need one.   April 2012 Hud Elem     Menu Deposit Slip

BIKES/RIPSTICKS/ETC…….  Wow have we had a full bike rack this week!!  This warm weather sure does bring out the bikes and ripsticks.  With that being said, PLEASE REMEMBER to send a note with your child to their teacher giving them permission to ride/walk/ripstick home.  Unless you have done so, the teacher will be required to send them home however they normally get home, such as the bus!  Thank you for your help in this matter  : )

STUDENT DROP OFF……..    We have been noticing a HUGE increase in the amount of students being dropped off in the back of the school by the bus loop and the Middle School parking lot.  For student safety reasons we MUST have ALL students dropped off in front of Georgetown in the CIRCLE DRIVE.  The students are then able to walk around the building on the sidewalks to their playground.  Thank you for adhering to this safety rule.

ENTRANCE DRIVE SAFETY…….  As some of you are aware,  we had our first accident at the entrance to Georgetown/Baldwin Middle this week.  The car was attempting to make a left hand turn ONTO Baldwin St and was hit by an oncoming car.  Everyone was ok with minor cuts/bruises, none the less, a scary situation.  We are asking that during the busy drop-off and pick-up times that parents use the service drive by the athletic stadiums if you are needing to make a left hand turn onto Baldwin St.  This way you will come to an intersection with a traffic light.

One more thing in regards to the entrance drive…….. we have a huge concern for student safety here.  Cars are pulling into the drive and exiting the school at a high rate of speed.  This is becoming a safety concern more so now due to the amount of students walking/riding bikes to school.  PLEASE SLOW DOWN as you enter/exit the school drive!!  Thank you!  Remember it is for the safety of the students  : )

SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT EVENTS…….  As many of you know, Spencer Meyer is a very special Kindergarten student here at Georgetown in Mrs. Estefan’s class and his parents, Jason and Jodi, are also staff members within the district.  Spencer is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and in March the family was informed that the cancer had returned in his spine.   The entire district is helping to raise money for the SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT FUND and we have a few things to let you know about.  These are great ways to help the family in this time of need!!

BENEFIT BASKETBALL GAME…….. will be held Friday, April 27 at 7:00pm at the High School.  This will be great night of fun for everyone!!  The game will be between the staff at Baldwin Middle and Riley Middle.  It will be the “Baldwin Street Ballers vs. Riley Street Rim-Rattlers”!  Doors will open at 6:30pm and entrance fees will be a VOLUNTARY DONATION to the Spencer Meyer Fundraiser!  Please come out and join us to show your support for the Meyer family!  Lots of fun things and the Eagle’s Landing will be selling $1.00 Squishees (slushees), there will be Jet’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s, pop and candy!  What could be better?!  So MARK your calendars for FRIDAY, APRIL 27!!

TEAM SPENCER….. Fliers for this event should have come  home with your YOUNGEST/AND OR ONLY STUDENT.  I am also attaching it here in the blog.   TEAM SPENCER kids sign up sheet 2  Please read the attached flier or the one sent home with your student for ALL of the details.  This will be a donation for the Spencer Meyer Benefit Fund through sponsorship of runners and individual donations.  There will be a form coming home through PE for FREE REGISTRATION for the children’s events!  You may also order t-shirts on this form. If you want to purchase a t-shirt PLEASE make the check PAYABLE to:  MICHELE SYTSMA.   Once again this is a great way to help out the Meyer Family!!

ZOX Staps…….  These are really cool bracelets that we are selling to benefit Spencer Meyer AND Jarod/Caleb Mulder.  Jarod and Caleb are also students in the district and attend Park Elementary.  Mr. Mulder is ALSO an employee of the district just as the Meyer’s are!  Jarod and Caleb have a disorder called MPS3A.  These bracelets are being sold for ONLY $7 each in the office and all of the proceeds are going directly back to the families!!  Stop by the office and get one!!  We have been selling a TON of these and have had to get more almost every day this week.  We should have more available also after Spring Break. HURRY IN!!  : )

12th ANNUAL STUDENT ART SHOW…….. Save The Date!  The 12th Annual Student Art Show is just around the corner!  Hudsonville’s annual art show includes masterpieces from students throughout the district, including 100 pieces from our Georgetown artists.  The show runs April 23 through 26 at the Park Elementary Community Room.  There will be a special artist reception for Georgetown students Tuesday, April 24 from 5:30-7:30 PM.  Please check out the attached flyer that will be up in all of the schools to promote this great event.  2012 Flyer-Blog PDF

BLOG BITS 3/2/12

Happy first Friday of March Georgetown Parents!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……..  Well here we go…… ONLY 19 school days until Spring Break!!   The countdown has begun.  Let’s just hope that since March came in like a lamb that it will NOT leave like a LION?!?!  We had a very busy 4 day week here at Georgetown.  Conferences went very well and once again we had a great turnout.  Coin Wars were also a big hit!  We are all hoping that it will be a great fund raiser for our school.  We will be sure and let everyone know how we did and who are the winning classrooms!

Parents please be sure to update phone numbers in the office if any of yours have  changed.  Whether it be home, work or cell.  After we had our snow day last week some parents realized that their numbers were not correct in our system and should have  been updated.  Just send us an email or call the office and we will be happy to update these for you.

PK/K Parents…… please make note that next Friday, March 9 is a MONDAY/WEDNESDAY attendance day.  It gets a little confusing sometimes when we have a Friday off and the on/off schedule gets mixed up.  : )

PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS NEEDED…….. Send in your plastic grocery bags!  The Girls Scouts will be making plastic mats from recycled grocery bags to send to Haiti.  A collection box will be available outside of the office for the next few weeks.  Thanks!

5TH GRADE NEWS………  Immunization Requirements for 2012-2013 School Year ~ All incoming 6th graders (current 5th grade students) will have the immunization requirements as stated below:

2.  One dose of meningococcal vaccine. (Students must be 11 yrs old before getting this dose)
3.  One dose of tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis (Tdap) (if 5 years or more have passed since last dose of tetanus/diphtheria vaccine – DTaP, Td or DT).

If your child needs immunizations, please make work of completing these immunizations during the 5th grade school year. Doing so will be a great help to the Middle School Secretaries who need to check for immunization compliance for every 6th grade student in our district.

BLOG BITS 11/11/11

HAPPY 11/11/11 Georgetown Parents!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……..  Well we did it… we survived Conference week!  Lots of long days, commotion and the Book Fair.  Whew!!  However, to top it all off we had a marvelous Friday with comfy, cozy day!!!  What a GREAT way to end our week, cold weather, a few snow flakes and comfy clothes!

Hold on tight parents, before we know it is going to be Thanksgiving Break and then….. Christmas Break.  Wow the year is flying by.  Just a few important dates to remember to put on your calendar….. November 23-25 NO SCHOOL,  November 28-December 2 our Holiday Shop will be happening AND December 1 will be our Holiday Program at Fairhaven Church.

A note from the office as a friendly reminder.  If you are dropping your students off in the morning please REMEMBER they need to walk around OUTSIDE the building to their playground.  Students are not allowed in the building before 8:45 unless accompanied by a adult.  There is supervision outside on the playgrounds and NOT in the school in the morning.  Please be aware that it is getting colder out and many kids try sneaking inside because they are cold, so make sure they are dressed appropriately in the morning when they are heading out for school.  Thanks for your help and consideration in this matter.

HOLIDAY PARADE…….  The Hudsonville Holiday Parade is coming to town.  It’s a wholesome atmosphere where families can celebrate the season close to home with easy, accessible parking.  Held on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at 10:00am, this annual event is a festive time that draws a big crowd.  Parade Route:  Highland Drive & 32nd Avenue, proceeding north on 32nd Ave to Central Blvd.  The parade ends at the fire station where the children can meet Santa and his live reindeer!  Everyone is invited for refreshments.

DISTRICT HOLIDAY PROGRAMS………. Attached is a letter from our Curriculum Director regarding the schedule for all HPS holiday programs. Georgetown’s holiday program will be held on December 1 at Fair Haven Church on the corner of Baldwin and 28nd Streets.   We will hold two back to back performances, one for PK-2 and Grades 3-5.  In the past, we rented Resurrection Life for this performance.  This facility size permitted us to hold one program.  However, the rental fee is cost prohibitive for our 2011-12 budget.  We look forward to showcasing our students vocal talents on December 1.  In November, details will be provided about the exact start times for the program.  PLEASE READ THE ATTACHED LETTER FROM THE CURRICULUM OFFICE …..  Letter-parents (1)

PE NEWS…….  P.E.  C.A.R.E.S.  …….  It is that time of year again.  Our school will be collecting food for a food drive for PE.  This food will then be donated to Water of Life Church for their food pantry for local families in need.  This food drive begins NOVEMBER 1 and runs through NOVEMBER 16.   The class that donates the most food for this wonderful event will win a P.E.  C.A.R.E.S. t-shirt and a class bowling trip to Hudsonville Lanes.  Woo-hoo!  Start bringing in the food!!  : )

PTC NEWS…….  BOOK FAIR…..  went well this week.  Lots of happy shoppers!  Kudos to our Georgetown students…..  YOU raised $150 for “One for Books”!  Way to go guys.

HOLIDAY SHOP……  is coming soon.  Mark it on your calendars for Monday, November 28 through Friday, December 2.

COMMUNITY NEWS……. GIFTS OF APPRECIATION ………  Are you wondering what gift to get your child’s teacher or bus driver for Christmas this year?  As we all know, Christmas is a great time to recognize those special people – teachers, coaches, counselors, bus drivers, and other staff members – who are a positive influence in your child’s life and school experience. One way to show your appreciation is by making a donation in their name to the Hudsonville Education Foundation.  It’s a gift that keeps on giving!  Please see the attached donation form (or pick one up at your child’s school) for more information and directions for making your gift.   HEF-Gifts of Apprec

HAPPY FRIDAY AFTERNOON GEORGETOWN PARENTS!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE………. Well it was a busy week here at Georgetown!!  We had Kindergarten screening 3 full days, our Spring Book Fair was here all week and our 4th graders went to the Capital in Lansing on Thursday!  Now for the Spring Break countdown …….. 9 more school days!!  Woo-Hoo!!!

BIBLE STUDY…….. Parents please remember that MONDAY, MARCH 21 is the last Monday for Bible Study.  Thanks.

MAY 3 BOND ELECTION……. We are so fortunate to be in a school community which is growing. Over the past 5 years, Hudsonville Public Schools has
grown by 604 students. This trend is not new to Hudsonville as our enrollment has almost tripled over the last 25 years.  In an effort to address the need for additional classroom space, our Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to go before voters with a bond request. The proposal to be voted on May 3 calls for:
•New 9+ building on the existing high school site
•New South Elementary located on Greenly Street
•New competition pool and fine arts auditorium
•New transportation facility
•Reconfiguring the Freshman Campus to an Early Childhood Center
•Technology upgrades to all school buildings
•Athletic upgrades at Baldwin, Riley, and High School
Since the district is part of the School Bond Revolving Fund (SBRF), which the state makes available to rapidly growing districts, we will be able to build the facilities and improvements without a millage increase. Currently, the districts levies  7.0 mills for debt retirement and the rate will remain at 7.0 mills. The total cost of the proposal will be $82,000,000.00. If  you have questions please visit our website, www.hudsonvillepublicschools.org or call our superintendent, Nick Ceglarek,  616-669-1740 ext 1.

YEARBOOKS…….. Your student should have brought home their yearbooks home this week.  The Office just wants to let you know that we have “extra” yearbooks for sale in the office.  These will be sold for $10 per yearbook. They will be available on a first come, first serve basis.  If you will be writing a check, please make it payable to “GEORGETOWN ELEMENTARY”.
