Memorial Day Tribute

memorialday2011Memorial Day is a day that helps American’s to honor those who have died serving for our country.   The History Channel has an excellent video that documents the history of Memorial Day, formally called Declaration Day.

I hope that you will be able to take a few moments to remember the veterans who have served and continue to serve so that our great country can celebrate it’s continued freedom in this ever changing world.

BLOG BITS 5/26/2011

HAPPY THURSDAY GEORGETOWN PARENTS!  (How is that for a change?)

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……..Well we had a very good week here at Georgetown.  The Hope-Liverpool students were here for the week, so ask your students if they got to spend any time with them while they were here.  I think the students really enjoy having them around.  Our 5th Graders got off to camp without a hitch.  However, due to the lovely weather we have had they may be covered in mosquito bites from head to toe but I am sure they still had a GREAT time!  It is something they will never forget.  : )

PK/K LETTERS……. If you have an incoming PK/K student you should have received your letter in the mail stating what day your child will be attending as well as who their teacher will be.  We are just overwhelmed here at Georgetown how many new PK/K students we have entering the building this upcoming fall.  We will be having 4 Kindergarten classes and 2 Pre-Kindergarten classes!  WOW

A THOUGHT FROM THE OFFICE……. Just a little something to think about….. Remember as much as the rain is getting to each and everyone one of us, please remember we could have it MUCH WORSE as those in theSouth do right now.  Let’s remember to be thankful for what we have and do what we can to help others less fortunate!!  Let’s not forget about our Memorial day holiday on Monday and remember to think of those who have fought for us to be where we are today.

MEDS IN THE OFFICE……. This is just a reminder to those of you that have student medication here in the office.  It WILL NEED to be PICKED UP before the office closes the week after school.  Any medication that has NOT been picked up by WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15 will be discarded.  Thank you for remembering this for us!  : )

5th GRADE NEWS……. Wow, did I not tell you this time would fly by?!  Your 5th graders have two more big events and then we might as well consider them middle schoolers.  Enjoy these last few days with them as 5th graders,  they will be making lots of fun memories that they will have forever!  If you think elementary school went fast, middle school goes even faster.

Girls on the Run Team is AMAZING!

gotr

As part of their community service project, Georgetown Elementary Girls on the Run raised more than $400 for Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Through bake sales, garage sales, pop can drives, allowance donations and more, these girls amazed us with their generosity, energy and dedication to others. A big thank you to everyone who participated! With the money raised, Girls on the Run was able to purchase ALL the items below for children in the hospital:

· Books for Infants/Toddlers  · DVDs  · Athletic Balls

· Sports Equipment  · Water Bottles and Lunch Boxes

· Games  · Journals  · Puzzles  · Healthy Snacks and Drinks

· Scrap booking supplies; paper, photo books, stickers, etc.

· Distraction Toys  · PS2 Controller · Games (E Rated) for PS2 and XBox

· Lights and Sounds Toddler Toys · Craft Supplies · CD’s

· Nintendo DS Games  · Nintendo DS Game System · Child Friendly Headphones

And, in addition to this community service work, the girls trained for 10 weeks to race in a 5K run.  They truly are amazing in every single way.  Many thanks to Jennifer Waters and Elly Bainbridge for coaching this amazing group of girls.

It’s Just A Dream by Brooklyn Woody

brooklyn woody

Brooklyn’s story, It’s Just A Dream, was selected as worthy of a performance by the 4th grade team.

You can view the teacher performance below.  Congratulations Brooklyn on being a JUST RIGHT JUST WRITE author!

It’s Just a Dream
By Brooklyn Woody

“Dad, I’m home’‘ shouted Emily.
‘‘Your just in time for dinner,” said Emily’s dad in a joyful mood.
‘‘What are we having?’‘ asked Emily.
‘‘Your favorite … spaghetti!”
‘‘Yum!’’ said Emily rubbing her hand’s together.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
“Yummy this is good,’’ said Emily finishing her plate.
“Up to sleepy head!’’ her dad ordered.
‘‘Fine!’’ said Emily in a sassy tone.
‘‘Come on, go!’’ ordered dad.
“Thump Thump Thump’ went the stairs as Emily stomped up to her room. ‘‘Good night,’’ said Emily sleepily laying in her bed.

In the middle of the night, Emily heard a noise, so she woke up with her cat Alissa laying on her face! “Off Alissa, off!’’ Emily ordered. When Alissa got off Emily went on the balcony, and there was a shooting star! When she was about to make her wish her stomach growled. “I wish it could rain gummy worms!’’ she whispered to her self then she went back to bed.

The next day, Emily was in Math class she and her class mates heard a loud noise:
BOOM!!!!!

Everyone looked out the window saw a GIANT colorful gummy worm! Every single kid in Emily’s class ran outside and began eating the over sized gummy worm. After an hour or two, kids started getting chubbier and chubbier and the worms were getting bigger and bigger! Soon gummy worms were falling down like there was no tomorrow! Then, Emily started to hear a voice. ‘‘It’s all your fault!’‘ yelled a man.

‘‘No it’s not!’‘ shouted an angry woman. Then Emily’s seat partner remembered that when the first gummy worm fell Emily had said, ‘‘My wish came true!’’

Everyone in town turned to a angry mob and started chasing Emily all around until Emily saw a shadow getting bigger and bigger above her head! BOOM!

Just then, her dad walked into her bedroom. Emily looked at him and said, “Good morning, dad. I just had the weirdest dream.’’
