Week 5: Welcome October!

The first week of fall brought beautiful weather — and lots of sunshine.  It was one of the best WALK•A•THON weather days we have had in 8 years.   The support for our walk•a•thon was INCREDIBLE.  Watch this  walkathon video  from earlier this week.     Our PTC treasurers have been counting donations since Thursday — and  plan to have the total amount earned along with the winners for each category determined early in the week.cartoon-popcorn-1041

As we look ahead to our fifth week of school, the exciting event is our FIRST POPCORN FRIDAY!   Many thanks in advance to ALL THE PARENT VOLUNTEERS who pop the corn, serve it up into bags and deliver to classroom.  Your generous popcorn $ donations during open house make it possible for us to provide popcorn to all students in our building on the first Friday of each month. NOTE:  We use canola oil to pop the kernels.

artprizeIt’s time for our JUST FOR FUN fall activity.  If you attend ART PRIZE 2014 and would like to share a photo from the event, I will place it in a slideshow that will run on the same day the ART PRIZE winning piece is announced.   Email your photo to before the end of ART PRIZE:  treagan@hpseagles.net

Have a great weekend….enjoy this fabulous weather!

News from the office….

  • It’s hard to believe we already have a month of school in!! The kids were so excited to participate in the walk-a-thon! Thank you so much for all their hard work getting donations!! It is very much appreciated and the donations will bring a lot of fun throughout the whole year! We had hearing and vision screening done at school this past week. This is something that is done every fall. If your child brought home a white slip from them, please sign that and return it to the office. We will make sure it gets to the right place. Just a reminder from the office, please send a dated note with your student if you are going to make changes for how your student gets home. We have had many calls to make switches and it is just easier for the teachers  (and less disruptive) if they have a note. Thanks for helping with this!!! : )
  • Safety/Security Reminder:  We do not allow parents on the playgrounds during recess.  The reason behind this is safety and security.  Staff on duty are responsible for monitoring students and also to watch for adults who enter the playground.  They do not know all of the parents — and they are trained to alert the office by 2-Way if an adult walks onto the playground.

If you arrive at school for pick up while your child is on the playground, the office will 2-Way the staff and ask to have your child sent inside and down to the office for pick up.

PARENTS:  Please keep this in mind and help us out by NOT going onto the playground during school hours — unless you have explicit instruction by the office staff and the playground staff has been informed.

NEWS From the TRANSPORTATION OFFICE:  Students cannot bring ripsticks, skateboards or any large objects on the bus that do not fit into their backpacks.  State law prohibits us from having objects like this on school busses for safety reasons.   If students enter the bus with these items, the drivers must take them away.  Parents will have to pick the item up at the Transportation Dept.  This would be very stressful to the children so I ask that you help them understand that they have to make a choice to ripstick/skateboard to and from school because they aren’t allowed on the bus.  If you child ever needs to bring an object to school that is too large to fit in their backpack, please drop your child off in the morning.  Thank you for your help with this matter.

Baby Stadt Has Arrived!

HenryOur Mrs. Stadt, first grade teacher, gave birth to a beautiful baby boy this morning!  His name is Henry Robert Stadt and he weighs 8 lbs., 15 oz and is already 19.5 inches long.    Henry is Mrs. Stadt’s third child.  His big sisters Amelia and Evelyn are very excited.

Mrs. Stadt was at school this morning preparing for the day when she checked in for permission to head out because her contractions were 10 minutes apart.   Let’s just say, we ‘encouraged’ her to get home to meet her husband and head to the hospital.  Mrs. Stadt arrived at the hospital shortly after 9:30 and delivered Henry at 11:32 am.

Enjoy your time with Henry and the girls, Mrs. Stadt!  Mrs. Baker and your first graders will be in touch to share their learning celebrations and news from the room!

School Calendar Change

date changeThe district has changed a teacher professional development/records day.  The date was originally listed as Friday, March 6, 2015.  The date is now Monday, March 9, 2015.

Why is this important for you to know as parents?  This is a NO SCHOOL day for students because the teachers will be working on report cards for conferences, March 9-11, 2015.   This is also the week of our PTC Sponsored Spring Book Fair.

The date change is reflected on our calendar to the right.

Week 4: Perfect WALK•A•THON Weather

shoe 1The most important event of our week ahead is our Parent Club Sponsored WALK•A•THON.   As a school, we will ROCK the walkathon on Thursday morning from 9:30-11.   All the money donated by families like yours will go toward school events for the 2014-15 school year.

We are looking for willing parents to help run our Holiday Shop, December 2-5.  This special shop is one of my favorite events of the year.  I watch students select gifts for those they love, wrapping the gifts in top secret bags and stowing them away until Christmas Day.   If this is an event that you can assist with, please complete this survey.  If you have questions about the event, contact Cheryl Havens chavens@hpseagles.net

We will also be holding required VISION and HEARING Screening.    Hearing screening is provided to students in K, 2 and 4.  Vision screening is provided to students in grades 1, 3 and 5.   If the screening demonstrates concerns about vision or hearing, your will be contacted by a representative of Ottawa County Health Department.

Here’s to a beautiful WALK•A•THON week!

Safety and Security are Important

drillPractice is a part of school procedures for learning math, reading, spelling, science and social studies.  We also practice social strategies for problem solving with peers in the classroom and on the playground.  Understanding and practicing the procedures for safety and security are also a part of our school routines throughout the year.

This past week, we ran drills (practices) for tornado, fire and lockdown.  For each of these drills, the teachers show their students the expectations and I also walk them through the required behaviors over the intercom prior to the drill.  State law requires that we run 5 fire drills, 2 tornado drills and 3 lockdown drills per year.  With three completed, we have 7 more scheduled October through May.

Our goal is to help staff and students practice these procedures often enough that in the case of an emergency, the procedures are automatic for us.   If you are in the building during a drill, you will become part of the practice.  We expect all adults present to go through the procedures with us.

Please contact me if you ever have questions about the drills.
