Our third week of school starts off with school pictures. Geskus Photography turns the school library into a studio, taking photos of all our students and staff. It is complex and efficient schedule — working around specials (art, music and PE), lunch times and recess times—and everyone always looks their finest on this day!
Remember to give the name of your child’s teacher when you order pizza from Marco’s on Wednesday night.
Our week ends with Eagle’s Spirit Day on Friday. This is a great day for staff and students to show their spirit by wearing Eagle’s wear or blue/gold to school. Friday night, the Eagle’s play the Rockford Rams at Eagle’s Stadium. This event also serves as the HUDSONVILLE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION’s big fundraiser for the year. Money raised at the DUNK TANK (pre-game activity) goes toward education grants for HPS teachers. At 4:45 pm, you can have a shot at dunking Mr. Gort (one of our 5th grade teachers). He loves to get wet!
It has been a fast and fun first two weeks of school! I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Mrs. Hoekstra and I am the new face in the office with Mrs. Ripley. I have two kids in Hudsonville Public Schools and I’m so thrilled to be part of the Georgetown staff! The kids at Georgetown are full of smiles and we are having great start to the year!

The 5th Annual HEF Family Fun Fest Fundraiser is coming Friday, September 19th from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Eagles Stadium. The activities will take place before the home Varsity football game against Rockford and will include dunking your teacher or principal in one of our dunk tanks, showing off your football throwing skills, bouncing around in the bounce house, getting your face painted, a raffle for an iPad, and much more. Buy your raffle tickets at any home game to win this great prize. This event is sponsored by the Hudsonville Education Foundation and all proceeds will be used to fund grants for resources and innovations that directly enhance the education of our students in Hudsonville Public Schools. Mr. Gort will be in the dunk tank at 4:45! Get those throwing arms ready!!

The Girl Scouts of Hudsonville are hosting a sign up event for all girls in Kindergarten through 12th grade on September 20th. We will be meeting at the Hagar Park fire pit from 7:00-8:00 pm for a time of crafts, songs, and s’mores, of course! Want to make a bucket to sit-upon? Bring your own 5 gallon bucket with a lid (often available from most bakeries for free, or you can purchase at home improvement stores for a nominal fee) and we will provide the rest of the materials for you. Event patches will be available for purchase ($1) for those that would like them. We would love to have you join us! Pre-registration for the event is appreciated, but not required. MOBILE FOOD DISTRIBUTION – Saturday, October 4, 2014 Hager Park Church is partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to provide a Mobile Food Distribution. The food distribution will take place at Hager ParkChurch’s parking lot, located at 2635 Bauer Road in Jenison. Sign-in is required,although the food is available to anyone that needs it. There will be a large assortment of food, consisting of fresh seasonal produce and other high quality grocery items.

Hudsonville Public Schools Annual Education Report
The Hudsonville Public Schools Annual Education Report (AER) was presented to the Board of Education on September 11, 2014. The AER is designed to meet state and federal requirements for reporting to parents and communities. The report provides detailed data on state administered student assessment results, accountability results, teacher qualification information, and the state results for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).Parents and the community can access AER information for the district and individual schools by clicking on the Annual Education Report tab on our website, www.hudsonvillepublicschools.org. Greetings parents and students and welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! We have officially kicked-off our 2014 ROCK THE WALK, which is our primary fundraiser for the year. Our goal is to have all students participate and for each to strive for a personal goal of raising at least $25 to support their school! This is the ONLY Parent Club Fundraiser of the year. All money raised goes toward funding family activities, school activities and books/materials for the library and classrooms.
The Walk is SEPTEMBER 25 between 9:30 and 11:30. If you’d like to participate, please check your child’s class blog for walk times.
Here are some ways you can add some fun on the day of the walk-a-thon:
Wear blue, gold and Eagle spirit wear
Dress up like your favorite Rock Star
Accessorize with socks, bandanas, beads and hats
To make participation easy for everyone, we are holding the event during the school day, where students can walk, jog or run around the course. If you raise $25, you will receive a special treat at the end of the event: A cool blue flashlight.

On September 12, 2014 Hudsonville Dental will hold our 2nd annual Dentistry From the Heart, Free Dental Day. We believe passionately in being active participants in the community we have served since 1978. Our goal is to help make West Michigan a better place to live.
We will treat patients on a first come, first serve basis. The team of dental professionals at Hudsonville Dental will provide patients with a free extraction, filling or cleaning.
We had a fantastic first week of school! Four days into a new year, and we have learned all the routines of arrival, transitions in the hallway, learning expectations in the classroom, recess, lunchroom and departure.
One of my favorite parts of the day occurs at 3:35 when our PK and kindergarteners are picked up at their classrooms by their BUS BUDDIES and escorted to their busses. Walking side by side, chatting about their days, you see an older student with a younger headed to the busses. The photo above is of Rachel, a 5th grader and someone who has been at Georgetown since her preschool days, with Lily, a kindergartener who is just starting her educational life at Georgetown. As I watched the two of them walk to the bus together, I could still picture Rachel walking to the bus five years ago with her bus buddy. Just think how choked up I will be in five years when Lily is with her bus buddy!
Our second week of school involves more routine building along with setting expectations for the BE NICE part of our school mission. Our school mission statement is simple and to the point: Be Nice • Work Hard • Learn Well. While working hard and learning well are constant companions of academic settings, establishing guidelines for friendship, play and day-to-day communications at school are different from other settings.
At Georgetown, we not only want all children to welcome one another, we also want to make sure that children know how to identify when they are teased or bullied. In addition, we want to teach children how to respond to teasing or bullying done to them or to others.
We have a common set of lessons that we teach throughout the week in grades K-5. We call them the BE NICE • BE SAFE lessons. Each grade modifies these to meet the development needs of their class. Also, these lessons serve as a kick off to lessons that occur throughout the year. At the end of the week, your child will bring home a school pledge to share with you. Our hope is that you will go over this with your child and sign it and return it to school next week. The BE NICE BE SAFE lessons are below.
I have also included a snapshot of our weekly events. This week we have two JET’s PIZZA nights. These are organized by our Parent Club. A percentage of the JET’s PROFITS on these two nights goes back to our school, funding PTC activities (books for classrooms, student/family activities and events). If you order a Jet’s Pizza on Tues or Wed, provide your child’s class name (teacher name). The class that orders the most pizza’s wins a PIZZA LUNCH PARTY compliments of Jet’s.
School pictures are coming on Monday, September 15. This comes at the beginning of the year when everyone is still getting used to busy fall events…so mark your calendars!
Thank you to everyone who attended our open houses (PK, K and 1-5) last week. During the open houses we took many photos of family members, friends and students and teachers. My favorite collection of photos this year (above) captures brothers and sisters together.
As we open the year, I want to remind you to stay in touch with the blogs (your child’s class blog and this blog) for details about events throughout the year. As the year unfolds, the blogs will highlight Parent Club Events, inform you about upcoming Parent/Teacher meetings and serve the main tool for learning about the climate and culture of Georgetown. At the beginning of each week, I will provide a snapshot of the week ahead.
Some helpful hints for this week:
If you have a child entering PK, K or 1 AND you have a child in grade 2,3,4 or 5 encourage the older child to walk the younger child to the Pk/K/1 playground on the first few days of school. There will be many staff members out in the bus loop and on the playgrounds directing children as they get off the bus. Our very best assistants are older siblings who walk their younger’s to their playground and then walk to their playgrounds.
If your child walks/bike rides to school:
Mrs. Fabbro is our crossing guard and she is present in front of the driveway beginning at 8:30 and 3:40. She crosses the children across the driveway each day. If you are driving to school, please enter the drive slowly.
If you are a parent who drops off/picks up your children, please follow these rules:
Morning drop off: 8:30 am has playground coverage; 8:45 the first bell rings; 8:50 the second bell rings: Drop off in the front — DO NOT USE THE BUS LOOP. No cars are allowed in the bus loop. When you drop your child off, s/he walks to their playground: PK/K/1 (fenced in the front of the building); 2/3 – rear of the building (walk toward the PK/K/1 playground and then along the bus loop sidewalk); 4/5 playground- rear of the building along the Baldwin side (walk on the sidewalk across the front of the building and then around the back).
Afternoon pick up: Please be parked in the front lot by 3:40 at the latest. You may wait in the front lobby. Your children will be walked to the lobby to meet you. All PK/K/1 children need to be matched to their parent. If you have older children (grades 2-5), they may wait for you in the front outside area — however, they may NOT walk through the parking lot on their own. When you park, be prepared to walk up to the school to pick up your child. This is for SAFETY.
For all parents: Do not enter the bus loop area to pick up your children. Go to the office for pick up. If you do not see your child, ask the secretaries for assistance. The secretaries will 2-way the staff who will look for your child in the bus loop area or in the building. Again DO NOT GO TO THE BUS LOOP. We are responsible for getting all children on the bus safely and when parents enter the bus loop and take their children, it is disruptive and creates safety concerns.
Also, the front bus loop is closed to cars in the afternoon. For afternoon pick-up, do not use the front loop in the afternoon. It is absolutely critical that you be on time for pick up. We do not have supervision for children left behind due to late pick up.
At Georgetown, we are beginning our 8th year as a school community. We are excited to get the year started with your children! Thank you for your help with drop off/pick up. These are busy times for us — and we want all 600+ children to safely make it their playgrounds, classrooms, busses and cars.
