Do You Have a New Kindergartener?

If you do, it is important to know that our Kindergarten Round Up will be held on March 17, 2009.  We will run the program at 10 am and 7 pm –with the presentations being identical.  Simply pick the time slot that works best in your schedule.  The goal of the meeting is informational in nature:  registration, screening, and curriculum information.  Children can be enrolled at anytime this spring.  Posted below are all of the registration forms.  You can complete these and drop them off at the Georgetown office.

Children with birthdays between June 1 – December 1, 2009 will be screened on kindergarten readiness skills. If you have a child who will be turning five before June 1, 2009 and would like him/her to be screened, please check the box on the enrollment form. You will be contacted to set up a screening appointment after the Kindergarten Round-Up meetings in March.

Screening dates:  March 18, 19, 20.  These can be scheduled when you drop off your registration information.

*Due to lack of funding, we will not be offering PreKindergarten in 2009-10.  To find out more about this, scroll down to check the posting of 1/14/09.

Kindergarten 2009-10

A memo from the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Mrs. Suzanne Curro:

It is time to enroll your child for kindergarten if he/she turns five years of age before December 1, 2009. Open enrollment opportunities begin January 26, 2009.  Our Kindergarten Round-Up meetings will be held in each of our elementary buildings on Tuesday, March 17.  There will be a choice of a morning meeting at 10:00 a.m. or an evening meeting at 7:00 p.m.  The Kindergarten Round-Up meetings are designed for parents only in order to provide the necessary forms and information to prepare for the beginning of the new school year.

As many of you have heard or read in the newspaper, funding for pre-kindergarten programs will be cut by 50% next year.  Many educators and parents have contacted their legislative representatives to request reconsideration of this bill.  If this is not overturned, Hudsonville Public Schools, along with most other districts, will be forced to eliminate the pre-kindergarten program opportunity next school year.  All students would then be placed in kindergarten classrooms.

We are going to continue to enroll new five year olds as we normally do, and test those who turn five between June 1, 2009 – December 1, 2009.  Should the law change and pre-kindergarten funding is fully restored, we will adjust our plans accordingly.

Please bear with us as we await the final outcome of the legislative discussion.   Mrs. Suzanne Curro

A Blidget?

Have you ever heard of one? It is a blend of the words blog and widget.  I have created a PTC blidget for our blog.  This is a nice looking RSS feed that links you to current posts on our PTC blog that is managed by Carrie Clark-Berry.  Click on any of the posts within this blidget, and you will be taken to the PTC blog for more information.

I have created a Georgetown Blidget that is posted on the PTC blog that is designed to serve the same purpose.  Feel free to leave feedback by commenting in either location.  Our goal is to provide immediate, interesting and accurate information!

Got Games?

If the answer is YES, and you would like to donate some to our school, we would LOVE TO HAVE THEM!  If you have child friendly board games that your children no longer play with, we would like to have these to build an indoor recess library of games.

This project is being organized by a 4th grade student, Matthew, and his Kids’ Hope Mentor.  The goal is to accumulate games that will be stored in our MPR for indoor recess play.  Games to consider donating:

  • Decks of Cards
  • Connect  Four
  • Candyland
  • Blokus
  • Sorry
  • Chutes and Ladders
  • Chess
  • Checkers
  • Bogle….And many, many more!

Please make sure all the pieces are included!

Donated games can be brought placed on the stage steps of the MPR.

Thank you so much for your help with this student initiated project.    Mrs. Reagan
