Week 12: November 11-15, 2019

Week 12 marks the calendar point for 1/3 of the school year!  By the end of this week, I will have taken a black and white photo of each of our 600 students.  These will be posted on the wall outside the library — just in time for Parent/Teacher Conferences.  This is a very personal project for me — one that requires me to pause for 2-3 seconds with each child, spend additional minutes uploading, editing and naming, developing and posting to the board.  This is one of the ways that I learn the characteristics of each child’s beautiful face, their first & last name….and current teacher.  The video above highlights all of our kindergarteners!

The 12 week of school is  the perfect time for us to pull together our data to show growth in academics and social, emotional learning.  As I type out this blog post, I have  been fielding questions from teachers about the conference schedule, curriculum data and student support needs — and it’s SATURDAY EVENING.

The teachers are Georgetown are exceptional in every way.  They plan lessons academics and social skills that are highly organized, detailed, goal focused and measurable.  In addition, they interact with their students (your children) as if they were their own children.  They are child focused and present all day and prepare their lessons, analyze data and write reports and parent communication at home on the week nights and weekends.   These professionals also spend hundreds of dollars of their own money each year on their classrooms.

Many of you aware that media coverage of educators is not kind — educators blamed for nearly every social flaw.   We feel grateful to work in a district where bonds are supported (THANK YOU) with parents that support schools.

As proud as I am of them for going above and beyond with time, resources and care I also worry deeply about burn out.  The only way to prevent this from taking a toll is through appreciation of their work and care for your children.  I have been in this profession for more than 30 years and I have never worked with such a self-less team.  We are NOT PERFECT.  We are human and each of us has used the wrong word choice when sending an email or missed returning a voicemail in a timely manner.  And, when this happens we remind one another to own and we also encourage us to move on — allowing room for grace.  In addition, I encourage teachers to step away and let go and take care of THEMSELVES.

When you meet with your child’s teachers at next weeks conferences, be aware that all the information that is shared with you (student work samples, specific details notes about growth, and report card data and comments), this is all compiled after hours.  I ask that you keep all of this in mind during conferences and throughout the year.  Any expression of gratitude, goes a long way with people who are in this profession because they care about raising your children to be successful adults.

As I close, I need you to know how much I appreciate you and your parent involvement at Georgetown.  As I rush from one spot to the next during the day, I am touched by the number of parents who are supporting our learners each day.   We have a very special school family.

According to the weather forecast, next week will be cold and snowy!  If time allows, write your child’s name inside their jackets and snow pants!

PS This blog post was inspired by a friend and parent… thank you, D.G.!

EVERY WORD COUNTS at GEORGETOWN!

REMINDER:   KEEP TRACK OF YOUR BOOKS ALL YEAR!

If you have ever dreamed of being a millionaire, now is your chance.  Every student has the opportunity to become a member of this club if they succeed in reading for 1,000,000 words (or more) this year.

Mrs. VandenBerg, our librarian, keeps the tally of your books read on Reading Counts and Book Blogs.   The word count keep growing as long as you keep turning in your book lists, completing book blogs and/or completing reading counts quizzes. You can also track the books you read at home on this document (just print at home and write down your books).  We celebrate the millionaires at the end of each school year.  Find out about past millionaires by searching our blog with the key word ‘ millionaires ‘.

As a member of the MILLION WORDs club, each member will have their name on the MILLIONAIRE’s BOARD (display case in our rotunda) and receive gift card to BARNES and NOBLE.   How do you log your words?  It’s as easy as this:

  1. READING COUNTS QUIZZES: Each time you complete a  Reading Counts quiz, you get credit for all those words.  Mrs. Vandenberg keeps track of the word count for you.
  2. BOOK SHOUT OUT…If you aren’t a fan of the quizzes, write about your book SHOUT OUT to encourage others to read the book too.
  3. MILLION WORD CLUB BOOK LIST:  If you don’t like READING COUNTS QUIZZES, but you LOVE to read, you can still work on becoming a MILLIONAIRE.  Keep track of ALL the books you read at home (and on vacation) print this form:  Million Word Club History – PDF.

Week 23: February 11-15, 2019

As I write this blog post, my hope is the same as yours:  PLEASE LET US BE IN SCHOOL EVERY SINGLE DAY NEXT WEEK!  I also have some other thoughts about the weather cycle we’ve been experiencing, but I will not type those.

This weekend, most teachers are working on adjusting calendars and lessons — with the goal of maximizing the learning time and content delivery.  We do not like losing instructional time because we pride ourselves on the work we do to help all children learn.

So, we’re using our deep breathing strategies and reminding ourselves to be flexible — something that we remind our students to do daily.

The calendar below looks light on the school level — with the exception of our COUNT DAY on Wednesday, Feb 13.  This is a day that is key for you to get your child to school so we can count them in our district totals — which dictates our school funding.

Have a wonderful weekend…and week ahead.

Mrs. Reagan

PS  SAVE the date for BOYS DAY OUT on March 9 – BAM BOWLING from 1-4 pm.  Registration information coming soon!

READY SET….FIND THAT WINTER CLOTHING!

Tomorrow is Friday and looks like it will be our first day of snow!   I can already feel the excitement coming off the busses, onto the playgrounds and through the doors.

Just a few reminders:

  1.  The kids go outside at every recess.   We only keep them inside if the wind chill is below zero.
  2. WINTER CLOTHING is a must.  Boots, hats, mittens/gloves, snow pants. Write your last name on the snow pants’ tag — or get a white permanent marker and write it on the inside lining.  Use that same marker on the boots and jacket linings.
  3. Be prepared to hang up the winter clothing to air out and dry each night.

And, finally…get ready to hear about the new recess celebrations and concerns.  The SNOW is so much fun on the playground.  And, like most schools we have rules (I know… way to ruin the fun, right?!)  The rules are basic:

  1.  NO SNOW BALLS.  WHY?  Because we have had our fair share of eye injuries, head injuries, bruising etc. when these snow balls hit people in the face.  I always tell kids that if their parents let them have snow ball fights at home, do it at home.  But we can’t do it at school.
  2. NO ICE SLIDING.  WHY?  We have kids break their wrist or arm sliding on ice.  We have also had kids fall and get a concussions.
  3. FORTS…build at your own risk.  Our playgrounds are shared by nearly 600 kids. If you build a fort during one recess, another group might come out the next recess and change your fort — put on an addition or take off the front porch or destroy it for a new subdivision. So…build away…but know it might be changed.

I am sure you’ll hear about these celebrations and concerns. Our priority will be to have the kids dress appropriately for the snow,  have fun in the snow and be safe in the snow.

So….on that note, I am going to go hunt for my own winter clothing!

Mrs. Reagan

First Week of School, 2017-18

Many thanks for your participation and attendance during the Open Houses last week!  Once again parent attendance for Georgetown was excellent — and the positive energy was contagious.  I’ve included some photos from the event in this post and a slide show at the bottom

Every weekend throughout the year, I will post a snapshot of the week ahead — highlighting any special events.  This is our first post of the 2017-18 school year and as you can see, our first week is just three days long.  It will be nice way for all of us to ease into the schedule and new routines of each grade level.

Some tips for you as your prepare for the first day:

  1.  Know your child’s bus number and pick/up drop off location.  Put your child’s bus number on their backpack (K/1) and for older children write the bus number somewhere inside their backpack so they can check if they forget by the end of the day.
  2. Expect that the busses will be running behind for pick up and drop off for the first week.  The bus drivers are being careful to learn their stops and pick up all children safely.
  3. If your child is anxious about school or the new schedule, read this recent post for tips.
  4. Remember to place the registration paperwork (manila envelope from open house) in your child’s backpack.  Every teacher will be collecting these papers daily the first week of school.
  5. The first few days of school we provide extra time for snack and lunch times.  If your child doesn’t eat all their lunch on day 1, don’t be surprised — even with the extra time.  If this continues, please let the teacher know so we can do all we can to encourage equal socializing and eating time!

Most importantly, be patient as we all build a new schedule together.  At Georgetown, we will be helping 570 students adjust to a new teacher and grade, new routines for lunch, recess and learning — and doing all we can to get them safely into school and safely on the busses or to you in the front lobby for car pick up.

We are ready for your children….so let’s get started!  Here’s to a great start to our year!

Week 36: May 22-26, 2017

Just chillin’ before the next camp activity

As I write this blog post, the 5th graders, their chaperones and the 5th grade teachers are settling in at home after a wonderful time at Camp Henry.  This experience takes months of planning — including fund-raising, activity planning, chaperone recruiting, and the careful critical task of building camp cabin and team groups.  Our PTC also makes this event possible (reminder…all parents who donate to our WALKATHON are the PTC) with financial support.  On Friday, 5th graders will celebrate their 6+ years at Georgetown with a special outing!

I have to tell you, as I watched them work through their team building activities, I pictured them as kindergarteners, first graders, second graders…. and amazed by how much they have grown into their personalities and individual spirits.  I am going to miss them SO MUCH!

Here’s to our last full week of May.  Hoping for sunshine on Monday when our adorable first graders will be exploring John Ball Zoo!
