Baby, it’s cold outside!

With the many winter weather advisories issued this past month, we have been faced with the issue of checking the wind chill temperatures daily.  This is a task that Mrs. Ripley and Mrs. Nurenberg take on as our incredible school secretaries.  If you take a peak at their computer desktops, you will see that they have the school WeatherBug data posted to enable them to check the wind chill live for our playground.

When the wind chill temperature drops below zero, we keep the children inside for recess.  Wind chill temperature is “how cold people and animals feel when outside. Windchill is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by wind and cold. As the wind increases, it draws heat from the body, driving down skin temperature and eventually the internal body temperature. Therefore, the wind makes it FEEL much colder. If the temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind is blowing at 15 mph, the wind chill is -19 degrees Fahrenheit. At this wind chill temperature, exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes.”  (Information for the NOAA)

We anticipate that the weather will be much better this week.  However, it will be brisk on the playground. PLEASE dress your child warmly.  And, 5th graders:  Wear the warm stuff!  It is more important to be warm that lookin’ cool!

It’s a small world!

I imagine some of you humming the Disney tune in your head as you read this post! Our school blog has had well over 8,000 visitors since it’s launch in early November. This is truly amazing, especially when you consider that these visitors have come from six of our seven continents! The only continent to not yet light up on our board: Africa.

We have had many repeat visitors from schools around the world. I have honored them by creating links to their classroom and school blogs on our main page. This link is titled: Blogs From Around the World.

Enjoy visiting the blogs. I encourage you to leave comments on their blogs. I assure you, they will share these with their students and respond.

Do You Have a New Kindergartener?

If you do, it is important to know that our Kindergarten Round Up will be held on March 17, 2009.  We will run the program at 10 am and 7 pm –with the presentations being identical.  Simply pick the time slot that works best in your schedule.  The goal of the meeting is informational in nature:  registration, screening, and curriculum information.  Children can be enrolled at anytime this spring.  Posted below are all of the registration forms.  You can complete these and drop them off at the Georgetown office.

Children with birthdays between June 1 – December 1, 2009 will be screened on kindergarten readiness skills. If you have a child who will be turning five before June 1, 2009 and would like him/her to be screened, please check the box on the enrollment form. You will be contacted to set up a screening appointment after the Kindergarten Round-Up meetings in March.

Screening dates:  March 18, 19, 20.  These can be scheduled when you drop off your registration information.

*Due to lack of funding, we will not be offering PreKindergarten in 2009-10.  To find out more about this, scroll down to check the posting of 1/14/09.
