Kindergarten Readiness Program

2009/2010:   HPS Kindergarten Readiness Program

Research shows that most children who turn five by December 1 are ready for kindergarten. As a district, Hudsonville Public Schools has many supports in place to ensure that students will be highly successful in school. As an initial step, screening will be conducted in March for children whose birthdays fall between June 1 and December 1. Following the screening, teachers will meet with parents to inform them of their child’s strengths as well as to define readiness areas that can be developed during the months
leading up to kindergarten.
If however, after the screening parents still feel that their “young five” child is not ready to attend kindergarten in the fall, Hudsonville Public Schools will be offering a tuition-based, Kindergarten Readiness Program, on two full days per week located at one or two of our elementary buildings (depending upon enrollment). The Kindergarten Readiness Program will focus on fun, hands-on learning, incorporating Zoo-Phonics, Handwriting Without Tears, and math/literacy skills essential for future school success.

The stars are coming out!

 

An Update from Mrs. Roon, our Reading Counts Chairperson:

The Reading Counts bulletin board is full of stars!!  Remember, the last day the students can make their goal is Friday, February 27. 

Party plans are in the making! The students will be “launching” into outer space for the next Reading Counts Party on Friday, March 13.  Watch for more party details, but at this time aluminum foil, thin mylar ribbon, and regular ribbon are items needed for the party. If you can donate any of these items, they can be dropped off at the library or sent in with your child.  Thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping to make this party a success!

FRIDAY FACTS FTO (FROM THE OFFICE!)

Happy Friday Afternoon Georgetown Parents!

Just a few things from the office!  We are going to try something new!  Are you excited??  We are going to try updating the blog on Friday afternoon with “FACTS FTO” (FROM THE OFFICE). Hopefully this will cut back on all the cyber mail flying out of here!  Unless there is something time sensitive, I will try and gather things throughout the week and send one blog on Friday afternoon.  Sound Good??  So here we go!

There is a girls grades 3-6th volleyball clinic being offered through Community Ed.  Attached you will find the flyer with all the details.  If you have any questions please call Community Ed at 669-7747, Ext. 3.

GEORGETOWN LITTLE LEAGUE INFO

Georgetown Little League in‑person registration will occur on January
24 from 9 ‑ 1 at the Jenison High School Media Center .  Online
registrations are open now and will run through at least February 14
with some divisions having late registration with a $10 late fee until
February 28.  Little League is open to girls who are 5 before 12/31/08
and boys who are 5 before 4/30/09.  If you live north of Port Sheldon
and east of 56th Ave , Georgetown Little League is your Little
League.  More information is available at www.GeorgetownLL.com or you

NEWS FROM FOOD SERVICE

The food service department is accepting applications for food service substitutes.  These are on-call positions that offer flexible hours in a variety of positions at a starting rate of over $9.00 per hour.  This is an excellent stepping stone to a permanent position within the food service department.  If you are interested, please stop by the food service department located in Jenison Senior High School at 2140 Bauer Rd or call 457-2400 to have an application mailed to your home.

A reminder that free and reduced price lunch applications can be filled out anytime during the school year.  If your financial situation has changed since the beginning of the school year, help maybe available for your student’s lunches.  You can apply online at www.Lunchapp.com or a paper application can be downloaded from the food service webpage at www.jenhudfood.org.  You can call the food service office at 457-2400 if you have any questions or want an application mailed to your home.

Locker Clean Out Day!

Mr. Rob, the very best custodian in the world, has asked that we clean out our lockers on Friday, January 23. The winter clothing is overflowing from the lockers, and I am sure that there are many pairs of mittens, gloves — as well as numerous scarves, hats, and sweatshirts residing in some children’s lockers.

We will also have all the lost and found spread neatly on two tables in the rotunda. As students walk through the halls on Friday, they will have the opportunity to look for missing items to bring home.

If you know that your child is missing an article of clothing, please encourage him/her to look during locker clean out day, January 23, 2009!

Presidential Inauguration, 2009

Our country is amazing in that we can peacefully transfer presidential power from president (George W. Bush) to the Barack Obama, one party to another in the midst of millions of celebratory people within a few hours! Today, January 20, 2009, the United States of America welcomed it’s 44th President, Barack Obama, to the highest position of power in our great and free country.

At our school, students and teachers watched the event, witnessing an event as great as Constitution Day, which we just honored this past semester.  These discussion were poignant in that teachers modeled political party affiliation was not the focus of this event.  The focus of the learning experience:  Living in a great country with unimaginable freedoms and rights.   Please note that the soundtrack, though not patriotic, is symbolic of the city that President Obama has resided in for the past several years, Chicago, Illinois! Enjoy the sounds of Blowin’ in from Chicago!

Snow…snow…and more snow!

I took some fabulous and very impressive pictures of Georgetown on a beautiful snowy Monday in January. Compare this most recent photo of our school to the school photo on our header!

In addition to the icicles and sparkling, crystalized tree branches, I snapped photos of the mounds of snow…and children playing in it (with the help of Mr. Bowen). Enjoy the video slideshow!

A Shout Out to Ethiopia…and Mrs. Fabbro!

It is official!  We have had our first internet visitor from the continent of Africa.  This mysterious visitor logged in from Ethiopia, located on the eastern edge of Africa, situated in the Horn of Africa.  I suspect that Mrs. Fabbro, one of our fabulous Georgetown parents, had something to do this with this visit.   Many thanks to you, Mrs. Fabbro and the mystery visitor from Ethiopia.  You made this techie principal very happy.

Snap Shots: A New Blog Tool

While snowed in today (AGAIN), I visited some beautiful blogs around the world.  A new favorite of mine is the Green Park School Blog in the UK.  Their main school page links to the many classroom blogs, just like ours.  On their brilliant site (to borrow a word from Mr. Rafferty), I found nice little tool called Snap Shots.  Thank you Green Park School!

This tool enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, and more.

Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you “look ahead,” before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.

Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.
