Welcome Vernal Equinox!

Did you feel a spring in your step at  7:02 A.M. this morning?  If so, you have a great read on the axis points of the earth and the fact that they are not facing the sun.  Today marks the official first day of spring — also called the vernal equinox.   It is the one day of the year when days and nights are considered to be close to equal everywhere on the planet.

Can you balance and egg on it’s end today?

One way to celebrate the first day of spring and the unique axis points of the earth is to try to balance an egg on end.  Folklore (and some equinox geeks) profess this to be true.  I have never tried this….so if you get it to work, send a photo and I will share it on the blog.

The best part of March 20, it marks the official beginning of longer days for us!

Team Spencer Fun Run

What is Team Spencer?  Our goal is to raise money for the Spencer Meyer Benefit Fund for the Meyer family to go towards medical expenses.  Runners in the Fifth Third River Bank races (any race) will wear orange Team Spencer shirts & collect donations from individuals and businesses.

Spencer Meyer is a 7 year old from Hudsonville who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2010.  He overcame many obstacles and was doing well.  As far as the family knew, Spencer was on the path of remission.  In February of 2012, after a year and a half in remission, Spencer relapsed and the cancer was found in his spine.  In March 2012 Spencer started an intense three year chemotherapy regiment.  Current road blocks in his treatment have included pancreatitis, brain swelling, epilepsy, and intense emotional issues.

Spencer enjoys puzzles and is a big Star Wars fan.  He has an older sister Mikayla, who attends Georgetown Elementary, 9, younger brother Vincent 5, who attends Bauer Elementary, younger sister Tiffany 3, and a baby sister Quinnly.  Spencer’s parents, Jason & Jodi, are both teachers at Hudsonville High School.

If you would like to know more about Spencer’s journey, you can follow him on carepages.com.  His ID is one word:  spencermeyer

I am looking for kids and adults who are interested in joining Team Spencer for the junior run, 5k, 10k, or 25k. The 5/3 junior run will take place at the old Roger’s High School on May 8, starting at 5:30pm.  The 5/3 Riverbank 5k, 10k, and 25K will take place downtown on May 11 with the 5k starting at 7:20 am.  We will be collecting donations again, selling orange Team Spencer 2013 t-shirts and Team Spencer wristbands.  Proceeds will go to the Spencer Meyer Benefit Fund.  If interested, please contact Michele Sytsma at cmsytsma@sbcglobal.net616-662-2858, or find Team Spencer on facebook and ask to join.

March Robins…Brrrrrrr!

Mrs. Brouwer and her fifth grade class spotted a flock of 20 robins searching for worms on our 4/5 playground this week.  As we brace for a bitterly cold week, these robins are here to remind us that spring will come!

Another sign of spring:  Our 5th graders travel to Baldwin Middle School to tour the building as future 6th graders.   Some of these students (18) have been with us for seven years and the majority of them six year.  I have learned that even for those who I have known for a shorter time period, it is exciting and sad to see them mature into the next stage of their educational career.

We are fortunate to have our 5th graders move onto one of our outstanding middle schools.  Both of our middle school staffs, Riley and Baldwin, prepare well for our students in terms of courses, climate and culture.   I am truly excited for all our students…they are ready!

Have a great week – and stay warm!

Mrs. Reagan

Week 26: March 11-15, 2013

Did you spring ahead one hour?  If not, now’s the time to do it!  Daylight saving time started at 2 a.m. this morning. The down side, we lost an hour of sleep.  The upside, we have an extra hour of light each evening.  If you want to brush up on your daylight savings history, check out theses five quick facts.

The headliner this week is our Scholastic Book Fair, organized by Cheryl Havens and held in the Library.  Many thanks to everyone who is volunteering to help the children select and purchase their books.

Thank you to the PTC volunteers for wrapping up our week with POPCORN DAY.  This is a small event that brings smiles to many faces!

Have a great week!

Mrs. Reagan
