A New Year Calendar Year: 2013

We began our school year on September 4, 2012.   The new calendar year helps us kick off the second part of our school year and I have a feeling that 2013 will be full of good things!

I hope your holidays were filled with good times and magical memories.  My only disappointment was the lack of snow for all sledders, skiers, snowboarders, snowball throwers, etc.

As we kick the year off, I would like to remind you to keep your children home if they are ill — especially if they have a fever.  The Health Department is reporting higher than normal cases of the flu for this time of the year.  If your child has any of the following symptoms fever, cough, sore throat, headache, muscle/body aches, diarrhea PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME.  P L E A S E.

  • If your child has any of these symptoms before going to bed, plan to keep your child home.
  • If your child wakes up with these symptoms but begs to go to school, keep your child home.
  • Finally, your child must be free of any of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
Why am I being such a stickler about this?  Because we have had many, many sick kids at school this year.  Sick kids at school spread germs to healthy kids and staff — and the exposure continues to increase.   The influenza virus is very serious.    And…remember…it is not too late to get flu shots.  For more information about the flu vaccine and prevention tips, go to the health department website stickittotheflu.com.
Here’s to a great week of learning as we kick off 2013 at Georgetown!

Our 16th Week of School

As a school community, we have had sixteen weeks together to develop relationships as learners and people who care about one another.  It is precisely these relationships that will carry us through the coming week.

Our focus for the week will be as follows:  consistent, predictable routines and activities; continued focus on curriculum learning and instruction; care, time and attention as needed for children who need to be re-assured about safety at school.   We are not planning to run whole class discussions regarding the Sandy Hook event.  Our hope is to address individual questions as we receive them, however we do undertand that during the course of the coming days it is likely that a student will raise a question about safety while we are together whole group.  If this does occur, we have a plan in place for responding appropriately — referencing our own drill practices, our care and concern for all kids, the locked doors in our building and the rarity of events like this.

We urge you to keep your child’s teacher aware of concerns they may have —and be aware that these concerns may appear days, weeks and months from now.  Simply email or call your child’s teacher as necessary.

Please refer to the Thoughts and Resources  post.  This is a collection of resources for you to reference if needed.

As you can see below, we have a special theme day on Wednesday.  Teachers will be wearing their favorite (or not-so-favorite) holiday sweater.  Encourage your child to wear something that reflects the holidays…socks, shirt, hat, etc.

I am thinking of you as you prepare your children for school this week.  Please hold us in your thoughts and prayers as we do our very best to maintain a caring, safe, nurturing learning environment.

Warmly, Mrs. Reagan

Thoughts and Resources

I know that many of you are following the tragedy in Connecticut.  As you know, I am forever thinking about the audience as I speak and write — and as a result, struggle to compose a post that is sensitive to readers of all ages.

As I work to come to terms with this sad event, know that I am also working to develop resources to support staff as they receive questions from children and parents next week.  I can assure you that the Georgetown staff will do all that we can to sensitively respond to questions.

I will be guided by an amazing team of administrators and support staff through this process—never do I work alone in this amazing community of educators, parents, teachers and community members.

For those of you who are struggling with how to respond to questions from your children throughout the weekend, I offer resources below– received from our Ottawa County Support Team (OAISD).  I recommend that you read these links carefully and review them so that you can filter through appropriate responses for the age of your children.

Please know that we, at Georgetown, will be focused on keeping our school environment safe and focused on learning–and at the same time be prepared to respond sensitively to questions we receive.  We care deeply about your children and our profession.

Warmly,

Theresa

Ten School Days and Counting

Nearly every conversation I have with children right now has to do with the count down to vacation and Christmas Day:  “How many days until Christmas?”  This is quickly followed with, “When are we getting snow?”    I can usually answer the first question but the second one has me stumped.

I am wishing for cold and snow so that our playground is transformed from a mud field to a winter play land.  Until the snow arrives, you can entertain yourself with this online snowflake maker.    Maybe if everyone makes an online snowflake, a cold front with move in dropping beautiful snowflakes all over Georgetown.

Our week ahead is posted below.  Throughout the week, students will be shopping in the PTC sponsored holiday shop (library).  We will end the week with POPCORN DAY–another PTC sponsored event and a favorite day for everyone.

Here’s to a great week!

Mrs. Reagan
