Week 12: November 11-15, 2019

Week 12 marks the calendar point for 1/3 of the school year!  By the end of this week, I will have taken a black and white photo of each of our 600 students.  These will be posted on the wall outside the library — just in time for Parent/Teacher Conferences.  This is a very personal project for me — one that requires me to pause for 2-3 seconds with each child, spend additional minutes uploading, editing and naming, developing and posting to the board.  This is one of the ways that I learn the characteristics of each child’s beautiful face, their first & last name….and current teacher.  The video above highlights all of our kindergarteners!

The 12 week of school is  the perfect time for us to pull together our data to show growth in academics and social, emotional learning.  As I type out this blog post, I have  been fielding questions from teachers about the conference schedule, curriculum data and student support needs — and it’s SATURDAY EVENING.

The teachers are Georgetown are exceptional in every way.  They plan lessons academics and social skills that are highly organized, detailed, goal focused and measurable.  In addition, they interact with their students (your children) as if they were their own children.  They are child focused and present all day and prepare their lessons, analyze data and write reports and parent communication at home on the week nights and weekends.   These professionals also spend hundreds of dollars of their own money each year on their classrooms.

Many of you aware that media coverage of educators is not kind — educators blamed for nearly every social flaw.   We feel grateful to work in a district where bonds are supported (THANK YOU) with parents that support schools.

As proud as I am of them for going above and beyond with time, resources and care I also worry deeply about burn out.  The only way to prevent this from taking a toll is through appreciation of their work and care for your children.  I have been in this profession for more than 30 years and I have never worked with such a self-less team.  We are NOT PERFECT.  We are human and each of us has used the wrong word choice when sending an email or missed returning a voicemail in a timely manner.  And, when this happens we remind one another to own and we also encourage us to move on — allowing room for grace.  In addition, I encourage teachers to step away and let go and take care of THEMSELVES.

When you meet with your child’s teachers at next weeks conferences, be aware that all the information that is shared with you (student work samples, specific details notes about growth, and report card data and comments), this is all compiled after hours.  I ask that you keep all of this in mind during conferences and throughout the year.  Any expression of gratitude, goes a long way with people who are in this profession because they care about raising your children to be successful adults.

As I close, I need you to know how much I appreciate you and your parent involvement at Georgetown.  As I rush from one spot to the next during the day, I am touched by the number of parents who are supporting our learners each day.   We have a very special school family.

According to the weather forecast, next week will be cold and snowy!  If time allows, write your child’s name inside their jackets and snow pants!

PS This blog post was inspired by a friend and parent… thank you, D.G.!

Week 8: October 14-18, 2019

This weekend, I could feel the first hints of winter blowing across Lake Michigan.  I broke out my winter coat and gloves…but drew the line at pulling out my boots!

Remember…as you get prepare your child’s winter clothing, write your last name on the tag (if the tag is big enough).  This is a huge help to us when items land in our LOST and FOUND.

Speaking of WINTER, two of our staff members volunteered for the URBAN HAY DAY DUNK TANK this Saturday!  It was 40 degrees and windy…and they were all smiles! MANY THANKS TO MRS. Ball (Gr 5 Teacher) and MRS. Nienhuis (PE Teacher)!  Photos of their bravery at the top of this post!

We are well enough into the school routines that we have parents volunteering to assist with reading and math activities in many classrooms, grade K-3.  Thank you, parents, for your support and involvement.  One of my favorite volunteer activities are those of you who come in to be mystery readers.  It is so much fun to see the excitement on your child’s face when you enter the room with a book to share.

Parent Teacher Conferences are the evenings of November 18 and 20 this year.  We schedule these for parents.  Please help us by providing us with your preferred evening and we will notify you of your time by November 1.  We schedule siblings on the same evening — so that parents of more than one child need to come one night only.  The conference survey can be found here: NOVEMBER PT CONFERENCE SURVEY

A snapshot of our week is below.  It’s early release Friday, which means we will also have POPCORN DAY!

Here’s to a great week ahead!

Holiday Program 12/13/18

Fair Haven Ministries is located down the road from Georgetown Elementary at the corner of Baldwin Street and 28th Ave.

Why is it held at a church?  Our elementary schools have grown so big that we need a big space to perform!  We are too big for the High School or Freshman Auditoriums.  Fair Haven seats about 1500 and graciously allows Hudsonville schools to rent their auditorium for our performances.

What time do students need to be there?
Students need to report to their assigned classroom 15 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE PROGRAM.

  • 6:30 – 7:00   K-2nd     (Students report at 6:15)
  • 7:45 – 8:15   3rd-5th   (Students report at 7:30)

It is very important not to be late so teachers have enough time to line students up in their riser orders, pass out props and make sure everyone who has a special part is accounted for. Please do not send your child to the classroom unsupervised or prior to their scheduled time.  Please keep their coats with you.

Where does my child need to go when they get to the church?
There will be signs directing you to your child’s classroom.
Below are the room assignments by grade along with a map of the rooms.

  • K and 5th – Family Life Center
  • 1st  and 3rd –  100 Wing
  • 2nd  and 4th –  400 Wing

How long will the program be?  Each group will perform for about 30 minutes. There will be 45 minutes between the two programs for K-2nd grade students to leave and upper elementary students to arrive for the next program.

What order are the grades singing? The grades are singing in order of age: Kindergarten perform first, then 1st/2nd grade, then 3rd grade and finally 4th/5th grade.

Can we save seats earlier in the day? No. The only reserved seats will be marked off and are for the directors, students and teachers.
Seating is first come first serve when the doors open.

PLEASE be respectful and courteous to other families. Everyone wants a good seat and we will do our best to fit everyone into the auditorium.  Please try to keep young children on your laps and not to take up unnecessary seats in order to leave more space for others.

Is food or drink allowed in the church? Absolutely no food or drink is allowed in the church. This is strictly enforced.

Do the students need to wear anything special? No. Most students love to dress up and will wear special holiday dresses or outfits, but there is no requirement. The exception to this is if your child has a special part. Some parts require special costumes. Many costumes are provided, but some may have to be brought from home. If your child has a special part, they should have brought home a “congratulations” letter that would say if they need to wear or bring anything special. Please note that if your child has a special part that requires a costume, they will NOT have time to change in between songs and will need to wear their costume for the entire performance.

How do students get special parts? For most parts, students audition during the school day. Sometimes simple parts are randomly chosen by pulling a class number from a jar or assigning my ipad to randomly pick a name. I also keep track of every student who has ever had a Christmas program part from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Whenever possible, I try to give parts to students who have not ever had parts or who have not had parts in the past couple years. Typically, I will have about 50-100 students audition for one part! I narrow the students down to about 20 and put those names in a bowl and draw a lucky winner. Although I would love everyone to have a part, having almost 600 students and only a handful of parts each year is very difficult. I discuss this with the students and they realize everyone cannot have a solo part, but that EVERY single person is important to the success of the program. Most songs have special props or motions that involve everyone as well.

How do we order a DVD of the performance? WCET TV records the performance each year.  They sell DVD’s for $15.

Please fill this form out and return to office.  GEORGETOWN HOLIDAY PROGRAM DVD

Who do I contact if I have questions? Please email Mrs. Bretz at abretz@hpseagles.net.  This is usually the fastest way to communicate with me- especially the day or two before the program.   I am often out of my classroom during dress rehearsals so phone messages are not always able to be checked.

For those of you who have been ignoring all my emails during the month of August, this is a blog post reminder that our Grade 1-5 Open House is tonight…Wednesday, August 22 from 6:30-7:30 pm.

The teachers have been working hard to prepare their rooms so that they are a safe, calm and welcoming environment for your children.  Mr. Rob has the building and the grounds looking PHENOMENAL!  I and the secretaries have been working to get class lists prepared and pulling together endless details to make sure we welcome every child and parent to our school tonight and next week Tuesday.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Word of the Week: DRAW

draw

This is our last word for the 2016 year:  DRAW.   The new year will bring a new list for us to learn…and absorb and apply.  On the surface, DRAW means to use a tool to create a visual representation of an object or person.   We would like to expand that definition as follows:  to take or pull out

This song for our word, draw , helps to understand the broadened meaning of this word.

If the district is closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow day will be moved to the next school day.  An example: if school is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.  Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to order a lunch if they need one. The only exception to this policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with the regular menu on Monday.  Information on what menu will be served on the day you return will be available on Twitter or the foodservice web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thank you! ~ Stacey L. Wykoski, Food Service Director
