Week 29: April 11-15, 2016

Welcome back from Spring Break!  If you were somewhere warm and breezy this past week, I hope you pulled the warmer weather back in this direction.

Looking ahead to the week, you’ll notice that the state required M-STEP test is scheduled for grade 5.  Our fifth graders have six days of testing (3 days this week and 3 days the following week). All test sessions take place in the mornings between 9-12:30pm.   If you have a fifth grader, they must arrive on time (by 8:45 am) and they cannot leave once the test has begun.  Because of this, do not schedule appointments during the testing time periods.  Grade 3 testing takes place beginning 4/26 and grade 4 testing begins 5/1o.

Some other highlights of the week:  JET’s PIZZA NIGHTS (remember, a portion of the profits goes directly to our school) and POPCORN FRIDAY (compliments of the PTC and an amazing group of parents who volunteer to pop and serve)!

Here’s to a great week!

What is a BOILER?

The traditional definition of a boiler via wikipedia:  boiler is a closed vessel in
which water is heated.  The fluid does not necessarily boil.  The heated or vaporized fluid exits the boiler for heating.

old boilerWhen I think of a boiler, I imagine a huge metal tank with valves and dials, roaring away as it heats water to push through the building to heat the rooms.  The first school I taught in had a boiler that looked like the blue beast pictured to the left.

The water at Georgetown doesn’t come to a boil.  As a matter of fact, we don’t have a boiler innov.water tank.  Our “boiler” is a tankless design which means that our boiler takes up less space…and it is very quiet (especially when it isn’t working).   The water is pulled from the ground and it is flash heated, then cooled down to the perfect temperature to move through the building and keep us comfortable.  (Disclaimer…this is a very simplified explanation of a very complex system.  For all those heating and cooling experts out there, forgive me for what I have left out!)

Feel free to watch this video to become an expert on the AERCO INNOVATION 1350…the model we have in our school. The people who work on these systems need to have an understanding of plumbing, electricity and technology — which means they
pleune (1)need to have solid reading, math, science and technology skills, along with the ability to work as a team to communicate as they problem solve a breakdown.

The team from PLEUNE  is hard at work on our system right now.  Fingers and toes crossed that they get it up and running soon!

PILLOW POLO CHAMPS… AGAIN!

staff (1)

Yes.  It’s True.  The teachers managed to beat the 5th graders for the 8th year in a row.    We played multiple teams of 5th graders (3 minutes per game) for a 45 minute period.

Each three minute period brought fresh faced, vibrant, athletic and energetic 10 and 11 year Rob (1)olds matched against a team of flush faced, barely rested, formerly athletic and good humored teachers.    We managed to pull off a win…but it took some serious effort and some creativity.  It helped that we had Mr. Rob as our goalie, too.  Score 3 Teachers, 0 Students.

The fifth graders demonstrated great sportsmanship by not bouncing me out of the game when I spent three minutes in the goalie box trying to distract goalie, Aaron Spears.

Thank you 5th graders for taking us on….and giving us a great workout.

Signed Mrs. Reagan…who is typing from the couch.

Four Week Countdown: May 11-15, 2015

calendar

There are four weeks remaining until the end of the 2014-15 school year….and these weeks are going to fly by.

You will be receiving emails and see blog posts about upcoming events.  Teachers are exceptionally busy staying on top of M-STEP testing (new…stressful and time consuming for both students and teachers), finishing up important curriculum instruction AND completing final assessments for end of the year report cards.  If you are unsure about an event, check the blog.  If you don’t see it on the class blog, email or call your child’s teacher.

The final week of school will be our JUST WRITE celebration.  In the past, this has been mid-May, however we had to move it due to the state testing that now takes up the final 8 weeks of school for grades 3-5.    Tours for each grade will be as follows:  Grades 3, 4, 5 will be on JUNE 1; Grades K,1,2 will be on JUNE 2.  Teachers will soon be getting the time of the JUST WRITE tours out to you so you can put this down on your calendars.

Below is a snapshot of some of the events for the coming week.

Wishing every mother a WONDERFUL Mother’s Day weekend!  Save those precious notes and cards.  You’ll want to pull these out and re-read them when your children are older and too embarrassed to share such sweet thoughts and sentiments with you!  And…if you get a moment, watch this video segment, #iwishmymotherknew.

News from the office….

Well, we knew the weeks would fly by and they certainly are!! We are half way done with M-Step testing and the kids are doing well! We are glad the weather is cooperating so the kids can get outside and take some well deserved breaks! We are going to start our last countdown of the year! Here it goes, 24 SCHOOL days until we are done!! Our last day of school is June 5 and the kids will be dismissed at 1:00.

This is also just a reminder to parents that we are receiving an increased amount  of calls to change how students are going home. We would like to remind parents to please send a note to the teacher in the morning as this is a huge help to them and also less disruptive to the class time. We appreciate your help with this so much!!

The last reminder we would like to send out is if your child brings in a frozen treat for birthday or just for fun, please bring them in a cooler. We do not have a lot of room in the lounge freezer to store these. Again, thank you for your understanding!

Vote May 5!….

VoteANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL

On May 5, voters will be asked whether to renew Hudsonville Public School’s non-homestead millage. This is an annual renewal generating approximately $4 million dollars of operating revenue each year for our school district.

The non-homestead millage was established in 1994 with the passage of Proposal A. Proposal A shifted a large portion of property taxes to a state education tax and an increased sales tax. As a result of Proposal A, school districts must levy 18 mills on non-homestead properties to receive the full per-pupil foundation allowance

It is important to note this is NOT a tax on primary residences and is NOT a new tax.

It is a proposal to continue the existing 18 mill assessment on only non-homestead properties such as industrial and commercial property and second homes. State law requires school districts levy this tax or lose a significant portion of their state per-pupil foundation allowance funding, which would potentially require cuts to student programs.

Hudsonville Education Foundation Gifts of Appreciation….

The end of the school year is near. This is a great time to honor a special person who has been a positive influence on your child’s life or school experience. Teachers, coaches, counselors, bus drivers, and many others, influence and guide them. One way to show your appreciation is by making a donation in their name to the Hudsonville Education Foundation. When a donation is made to the Foundation, the name of the honoree will be posted in each building and an acknowledgement will be sent to them.

The Hudsonville Education Foundation is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that was founded to foster educational opportunities for Hudsonville Public School students by providing funding for resources that enhance education and encourage innovative learning. The Hudsonville Education Foundation is managed by The Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area. Donations qualify as a charitable contribution. Your donation will not only honor a staff member but will help fund future grants that will directly impact Hudsonville students.
