Snow Day = No School!

snow dayAs I walked around the lunchroom, hallways and classrooms today, I was told to do the following as soon as I got home:

  1. Turn my PJ’s inside out and wear them backwards.
  2. Put a spoon under my pillow.
  3. Flush ice cubes down the toilet–at least 6.
  4. Run around the table screaming the snow day chant, “SNOW DAY, SNOW DAY, SNOW DAY!”

I must have some amazing pull with Mother Nature because before I had gotten to number 4, school was cancelled!

Due to the Blizzard Like Hazardous Conditions, there will be

NO SCHOOL on FEBRUARY 2, 2011.

EAGLE’s NEST DAY CARE is also CANCELLED.

Be safe and stay warm tomorrow!

Background Checks: Volunteer Requirement

To ensure safety for all of our students, we are adding a layer of protection that requires all volunteers to submit a background check.  You will receive the paperwork home with your packet of student information forms that must be completed at the start of the school year.

The form must be completed for parents who plan to support classroom instruction (web reading, center support, general classroom assistance, and field trips).  Forms will arrive home in the start up packets.  You can also stop by the office and pick up a form to complete.  All information will be submitted to the Human Resources Department.  Link to Background Check Form.

Each teacher will have a list of parents who have completed the background check.  Volunteers for classroom work and field trips will be pulled from these lists.

Thank you for you help in ensuring that we have a safe climate for learning.

Got Talent?

Got Talent

Are you in grades 3rd-5th? Can you juggle?  Play an instrument?  Do a special jump rope routine?  Magic tricks?  Gymnastics routines?  Dance?  Sing?  Play the recorder? Be an MC for the show?   Then Georgetown wants YOU!!

Our annual Georgetown Talent Show is right around the corner!  Since May is so busy with end of year activities, we have decided to move our Talent Show earlier in the year to help celebrate the day before spring break??!!  Its time to pull out all the stops and start practicing those acts!!

If your child is interested in participating in our Talent Show, there are some very important dates and details coming up that they need to be aware of to be considered for the show:

IMPORTANT DEADLINES:

  • Decide on act and start practicing alone or with friends:   NOW!
  • Pick up Official Talent Show Audition Sheet (located outside music room door):  Available on Tuesday, March 2
  • Talent Show Audition Sheets must be turned in on or before:  Monday, March 15
  • Auditions will be held:  Wednesday, March 17 – Friday, March 19
  • Talent Show:  Thursday, April 1

IMPORTANT RULES:

  1. Students must be in grades 3rd-5th to be in Talent Show.  All other grades will watch only.
  2. Act must be 2 minutes or less.
  3. If song/act to perform is longer than 2 minutes, we can fade music out at the 2 minute mark.
  4. When submitting Audition Sheet, lyrics for songs performed must be attached to sheet.  Only appropriate   music will be allowed.
  5. Students must come to Audition PERFORMANCE READY.  That means that they should perform as if it is the actual Talent Show.  They should have all CD’s and props with them in order to be considered.
  6. If auditioning to be an MC/announcer for the show, student should memorize one joke to tell for their audition.

So start practicing!  We are so excited to see all the amazing talents that Georgetown has to offer!!!  We can hardly wait for April 1!

Snow Day = No School Day

As I made my way through classrooms, the hallways and the lunchroom today, I was told to do the following when I got home:

  1. Flush ice cubes down the toilet.snow day
  2. Wear my PJ’s inside out and backwards.
  3. Put spoons under my pillow.
  4. Say the snow chant repeatedly and loudly, “SNOW DAY!  SNOW DAY!”
  5. Run around the room five times.

And….I have some serious pull with Mother Nature because it worked…and I haven’t even run around the room yet!

Today is our first official snow day of the 2010-11 school year.

SCHOOL IS CLOSED TOMORROW, FEBRUARY 2, 2011 DUE TO THE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS.

EAGLE’S NEST DAY CARE IS ALSO CLOSED.

Stay warm…and be careful!

Our First Snow Day

It is December 4th and we are experiencing our first snow day of this school year!  Use this day to relax, play in the snow and participate in the BLOG SCAVENGER HUNT! We will have our drawing on Monday…so that gives you three extra days to get it done.snow day

A tip for finding the “silly” scavenger hunt posts on each blog:  TYPE THE WORD  silly OR scavenger hunt INTO THE SEARCH BAR OF EACH BLOG.   By doing this, you should pull up the post you are looking for!

Enjoy the snow and the day to play.

Moon Over Georgetown

When I pulled into the school parking lot this morning, I was struck by the way the full December moon was poised over Georgetown…and set against an indigo sky.  I had to take a picture and share this with you.

We will have another full moon on December 31…and this will be a BLUE MOON.  If we have a clear sky, I will take pictures to share on the blog along with a HAPPY NEW YEAR post!

Based on the percentage of cloudy days we typically have in the winter months ahead, our current full moon may be the last one we see for sometime.  Enjoy!

Recess Games = Team Building

During the second week of school, we continued to focus on climate (BE NICE) in the classroom, hallways, lunchroom and playground.  To help students learn games for the playground, we paired upper el students with lower el students focused on fun, trouble free games.

Mrs. Jurewicz and a team of teachers led outside recess game training on September 18th.  You can view photos from this day on Mrs. Quigley’s blog. We will hold another day of training for grades 3,4 and 5 — and this training will culminate in a PULL (tug-o-war) to determine which local college is tops (Hope or Calvin).  This will be held on September 25 which is also our first popcorn day.  Details coming about how to pick your team in a post later this week.

We also created a video tutorial for inside recess games during rainy or very cold Michigan days.  Actors featured are from Mrs. Boersma, Mr. Gort, Mrs. Jurewicz, and Mrs. Bouwen’s classes.   These are games that can be played at home, too.

Blog Spotlight

As I have mentioned before, one of my favorite Sunday afternoon activities involves reading through our school blogs and then highlighting the work being done by our incredibly skilled staff members.  The teachers in this building are progressive and focused at all times on how to improve their instruction so that they can improve student learning–no matter what it takes.  Their plates are full…and their hearts are huge.

In addition, they happen to work with me, a tech geek principal who understands the future of paperless communication, and the need to create blogs, wiki’s and classroom/personal learning networks.  They are very patient with me…willingly take baby steps with me toward this goal.  And they do this IN ADDITION to everything else!

For these reasons, I feel it is imperative that I celebrate their work on blogging and encourage you to visit our blogs.  Please leave comments…and we will do our best to get back to you!

This week, I would like to celebrate our specialist blogs.  We are very lucky to have teachers within our building who have additional training in cognitive impairments, speech/language, and learning challenges.  Because these teacher’s roles range from servicing students within the classrooms (inclusion) as well as pulling out (focused instruction in a separate classroom), their blogs are a work in progress.  Each teacher is sorting out how to best support parents–with resources and information about student learning.

Staff Holiday Breakfast

Christy Hultink and Kristi Fellows, Parent Club members, hosted a beautiful holiday breakfast for all the staff members of Georgetown.  The tables were lined with evergreens and candles and smells of pastries, quiche and coffee filled the air.  Staff members received notes of appreciation, along with stipends to put toward the purchase of classroom materials.  (I do believe that Krista Lawrence pulled an “all-nighter” writing these notes and making out checks!)  Tremendous thanks to all the parents who donated the food–and made this event possible.  We, the staff of Georgetown, feel honored to work with you and your children each day!
