Blog Bits 4/2/2015

News from the Office….

It’s Spring Break!! Hope everyone that is going away travels safely! For those of us staying here, I hope the weather cooperates and we can enjoy some outside time ourselves! I can’t believe we are on the last leg of the school year already! Mr. Rob put the GaGa Ball Pits together and the kids are loving it! The weather should be perfect to put these to good use when we return to school.  The talent show was also a fun way to end the week! What a lot of talent we have here at Georgetown! Hope everyone has a wonderful break!!!

M-Step Testing….

Immediately following Spring Break, we will begin an intensive period of on-line testing for the state assessment.  This test, formally called the MEAP, is now called M-STEP.  To find out more about the test, please read this letter issued by the State Superintendent of Schools, Mike Flanagan:  M-STEP Parent Letter

Our fifth graders will take the tests over a 2-3 week period of time beginning April 13.  Fourth graders will take the test in the three weeks following this and finally, third graders will take the test the last three weeks of school.

Our Fifth Grade testing schedule is roughly outlined below.  We ask that your child attend full day, everyday during the testing.   Once  a student has started the test, they cannot stop until completed.  If the students stops midway through the test without completing it, all unanswered questions are wrong.

Classes taking the test every  morning (9-12):  Mrs. Walenta, Mrs. Gort, Mrs. Ball.  Class taking the test in the afternoon (12:30-3:30), Mrs. Burdis.

Vote May 5….

VoteANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL

On May 5, voters will be asked whether to renew Hudsonville Public School’s non-homestead millage. This is an annual renewal generating approximately $4 million dollars of operating revenue each year for our school district.

The non-homestead millage was established in 1994 with the passage of Proposal A. Proposal A shifted a large portion of property taxes to a state education tax and an increased sales tax. As a result of Proposal A, school districts must levy 18 mills on non-homestead properties to receive the full per-pupil foundation allowance

It is important to note this is NOT a tax on primary residences and is NOT a new tax.

It is a proposal to continue the existing 18 mill assessment on only non-homestead properties such as industrial and commercial property and second homes. State law requires school districts levy this tax or lose a significant portion of their state per-pupil foundation allowance funding, which would potentially require cuts to student programs.

Just Write Skit Performances 2012

Mason DeYoung

The Hockey Game, By Mason DeYoung, (Kindergarten – Mrs. Estefan’s M/W Class)

We are going to the Griffins hockey.
We are going to our seats.
I watched the hockey game.  Griffins won 2 to 6.

Kaycie Lawrence

Jumping off the Deck, Kaycie Lawrence, Mrs. Woodring’s First Grade

This story is dedicated to my brother because I love when he tells me to do new stuff.

On a warm sunny day in summer my brother dared me to jump off the deck in my backyard. I said, “uh-oh”. I was scared. I was really scared. I love when my brother told me to jump in the pool then…I finally jumped off. SPLASH! I jumped into the pool. I had a big smile on my face. I was so happy. I love when my brother told me to jump into the pool. “ I did it, I did it” I screamed. I was so happy. My whole family was proud. I was so so so happy. I love when my brother told me to jump into the pool.

About the Author
My name is Kaycie. I am in first grade. My first story was written when I was four years old. I was born in 2005. My favorite color is blue. My family is my brother, mom, and dad.

Aiden Klein

Going to Medieval Times, Aidan Klein, Mr. Jurewicz, Grade 2

We were in Chicago.  We were going to Medieval Times.  We were there and there were shields on the wall. We were in line to get a crown and to get inside the castle.  I wanted a blank crown and we got it!  I was with my mom, dad, Nora, Ella, Jackson, Alley, Jackson’s mom, and dad.  That was the people who went.

We were finely in the castle, but not in the arena yet.  My dad was getting me a black Medieval Times cup (we already have a gold one.)  They were selling real metal swords for $200!!!
We were finely in the arena and they serve each person a whole chicken!  They also serve huge french fries, tomato soup, bread, dessert rolls, and pop!  There were handles on the soup bowls and no silverware!

They did full metal jousting!  It was awesome.  We were the black and white knight.  We were also voting for the red knight and the black and yellow knight.  The knights we weren’t voting for were the green knight, red and yellow, and the blue knight.  We didn’t like them.
They also had a sword fight with real metal swords that make sparks!  When the knight jousted they had to put nets down because pieces of long wooden spears fly everywhere.
At the end they pulled the bad guy back and there was a guy with a huge wip and it was to frighten the bad guy and it was like CRACK!  The end.

Allie VanderWall

Dance Class, By Allie VanderWall, Mrs. McDonald, Grade 3

“Creeeeeeeeeek” the door grumbled as I enthusiastically opened it. It was a big crisp one and as brown as a steaming hot bowl of oatmeal. I inched into the room opened my backpack and jerked out my black tennis shoes. I tied them anxiously to be done (because I hate tying my shoes) and I talked to my teacher Miss Stephanie.

“I have something for you,” I stated looking everywhere in my backpack. I couldn’t find it anywhere. “Oh no!” I thought.

“I’ll bring it next week. It is instructions to see me at the talent show,” I said excitedly.

“Oooooohhhhh,” replied Miss Stephanie.

Then I walked onto the dance floor and found my spot.

“Okay let’s do it with the music,” yelled Miss Stephanie. I waited at the side of the room while Mindy was doing her fast part. All of us joined in to the dance.

I got really tired especially because it was Hip-Hop. When class was over I had a break. I talked to my friends: Hadley, MaKenna, and Julieanna. This is what we always did. After our forty-five minute break, class started. I tugged out my jazz shoes from my dance bag and put them on.

“Let’s learn our combination,” Miss Diane suggested when everyone was ready for Lyrical. “One and…two…and…three…and…four, five, six, seven, eight,” Miss Diane said as she modeled some dance moves. “Now you try,” ordered Miss Diane.

We all did as we were told and did the dance. Miss Diane stood in front and did the dance with us. I didn’t get it right away.

“Questions,” asked Miss Diane. I raised my hand nice and high on my tippy toes.

“Will we do it across the floor?” I asked. She nodded. We did it across the floor.

After practicing about four times, right side…left side…right side…left side…class was over. I quickly walked to the lobby, slid off my shoes, and put them in my bag. I grabbed my outside shoes and put them on. I couldn’t wait to get home to read. I hope that I remember to bring my instructions to Miss Stephanie next week.

Cam Fortuna

Meeting Michael Jordan, By: Cam Fortuna, Mr. Bowen’s 4th Grade Class

As I walked around the United Center, I desperately looked for a way to get in.
As I saw all the people handing in their tickets to get in the arena, I saw my opportunity…..  I needed to get in the Chicago Bulls game. There’s a little hole, but the security guards are everywhere. What am I going to do?  I see the back door, so I hurried to it.As I opened the back door I saw the biggest court ever.  Fan’s were screaming everywhere.  “The game is about to start,” I said as I walked around.  There’s my chance I yelled.  The security guard spotted me and yelled to the guard “ STOP THAT KID.”  I started running into the tunnel of the locker room. “Phew, I got away, and then all of a sudden another guard came from inside the locker room and grabbed me. I thought to myself the security guards must of called it out on the walkies.  So, the security guards are taking me to the security office.  As the two guards are walking me down the hallway, I think of plan B.  Sneakily, I kicked on of the security guards in the knee.  The guard begins to fall and swings a punch at Cam and hits the other guard in the gut.  I ran to a bench and flip it over to hide for cover. Both guards start fighting each other, the media, and the fans all come running down the hall to see what all the commotion is all about.  Other security guards arrived at the scene for back up support and became a part of the fight. It was complete madness watching from behind the bench everyone punching and kicking one another.

Suddenly the the buzzer went off,and I looked up at at the clock, it  is half I thought to myself.I saw the Bulls coming down  the  hall  to the locker room, so I
made my next move. With all the fighting still going on I know I could easily sneak back to the locker room.  I scurried down the hallway past the fight and into the locker room!  Completely relieved, “I made it in!”  Now to find Michael Jordan.

I heard loud voices and followed the sound in the locker room. The Bulls players are here and I see Michael Jordan.  I walk up to him slowly like I was in a trance.  I opened my mouth, trying to spit the words out to talk to him.   After a few seconds, I finally was able to ask him for his autograph.  Michael Jordan said sure I will give you my autograph after the game. He sees I don’t have a pass, and it was time for the players to go back to the game.  I was walking out of the locker room with the team, and the security guards spotted me!  They say, “Get Him!” Running towards Cam.  Michael Jordan yells stop, and says,” It is okay he is with me.”  The guards backed off and walked away.

I was thrilled to be able to watch the rest of the game court side.  The Bulls won the game 102 to 92.  Michael Jordan saw me jumping up and down court side,  and came  over to me with the game ball.  Then he had the entire team sign the ball.  I was in utter amazement and so very happy!!!!!!!!!!  I thought to myself that everything I went through today was so worth it!

Sarah Montroy

Spicy Pickle  by Sarah Montroy, Mrs. Bouwens’ 5th Grade Class

As I opened the big doors to the Mexican restaurant, I jumped all around. I ran straight to the little toy machine.
“Mom, can I get one?” I asked.
“Not right now Sarah,” Mom told me. The waitress showed us to our table and asked what we wanted to order. All my family members ordered, then it was my turn.
“I will have the nachos,” I said. When I was done ordering the waitress left to give the cooks our orders. We waited for a little while before anything came. When all our food came I looked at my plate. There in the corner was a small green pickle.
I looked at it for a second and then inched my hand to the plate. I picked up the small pickle and put the whole thing in my mouth. A couple of seconds later my mouth was on fire! It felt like a bomb exploded in my mouth.
“That was a spicy pickle,” I panted looking at my mom. She broke out laughing! Then everyone started laughing.
“Sarah, I think that was a jalapeno pepper,” Mom laughed.
“I thought it was a pickle,” I told her.
“Drink some milk. It will help. I don’t know why they would put a jalapeno on a kid’s plate,” Mom told me. So I drank and drank because I would have done anything to get that burn out of my mouth.
After drinking a lot of milk, my mouth stopped burning. My family stopped laughing too. Now I know never to eat something you don’t recognize.

Happy Spring Break Georgetown Parents!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…….  Well we made it!!  Spring Break is here!!  Yes, I know the day is not over, but I look at it this way…. we showed up today so officially we have made it to Spring Break!  What a day we had!  The Talent Show was fabulous as usual and the kids are really excited about having a few days off.  Remember that school resumes on Monday, April 9 and the first Friday we are back to school, which is Friday, April 13, that will be a TUESDAY/THURSDAY PK/K day!

LUNCH INFORMATION……… Here is the April lunch menu and a new deposit slip if you need one.   April 2012 Hud Elem     Menu Deposit Slip

BIKES/RIPSTICKS/ETC…….  Wow have we had a full bike rack this week!!  This warm weather sure does bring out the bikes and ripsticks.  With that being said, PLEASE REMEMBER to send a note with your child to their teacher giving them permission to ride/walk/ripstick home.  Unless you have done so, the teacher will be required to send them home however they normally get home, such as the bus!  Thank you for your help in this matter  : )

STUDENT DROP OFF……..    We have been noticing a HUGE increase in the amount of students being dropped off in the back of the school by the bus loop and the Middle School parking lot.  For student safety reasons we MUST have ALL students dropped off in front of Georgetown in the CIRCLE DRIVE.  The students are then able to walk around the building on the sidewalks to their playground.  Thank you for adhering to this safety rule.

ENTRANCE DRIVE SAFETY…….  As some of you are aware,  we had our first accident at the entrance to Georgetown/Baldwin Middle this week.  The car was attempting to make a left hand turn ONTO Baldwin St and was hit by an oncoming car.  Everyone was ok with minor cuts/bruises, none the less, a scary situation.  We are asking that during the busy drop-off and pick-up times that parents use the service drive by the athletic stadiums if you are needing to make a left hand turn onto Baldwin St.  This way you will come to an intersection with a traffic light.

One more thing in regards to the entrance drive…….. we have a huge concern for student safety here.  Cars are pulling into the drive and exiting the school at a high rate of speed.  This is becoming a safety concern more so now due to the amount of students walking/riding bikes to school.  PLEASE SLOW DOWN as you enter/exit the school drive!!  Thank you!  Remember it is for the safety of the students  : )

SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT EVENTS…….  As many of you know, Spencer Meyer is a very special Kindergarten student here at Georgetown in Mrs. Estefan’s class and his parents, Jason and Jodi, are also staff members within the district.  Spencer is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and in March the family was informed that the cancer had returned in his spine.   The entire district is helping to raise money for the SPENCER MEYER BENEFIT FUND and we have a few things to let you know about.  These are great ways to help the family in this time of need!!

BENEFIT BASKETBALL GAME…….. will be held Friday, April 27 at 7:00pm at the High School.  This will be great night of fun for everyone!!  The game will be between the staff at Baldwin Middle and Riley Middle.  It will be the “Baldwin Street Ballers vs. Riley Street Rim-Rattlers”!  Doors will open at 6:30pm and entrance fees will be a VOLUNTARY DONATION to the Spencer Meyer Fundraiser!  Please come out and join us to show your support for the Meyer family!  Lots of fun things and the Eagle’s Landing will be selling $1.00 Squishees (slushees), there will be Jet’s Pizza, Jimmy John’s, pop and candy!  What could be better?!  So MARK your calendars for FRIDAY, APRIL 27!!

MEDICATIONS…… Thanks to all parents who have turned in their student’s medications and forms.  We are still waiting for a few to be returned and if parents could get those in ASAP as we need to have the medication accessible if the student needs it and we MUST have the medication form ALSO to administer the medication.  Thanks for you help in this matter.

NOTES ABOUT DAILY CHANGES…….Parents we cannot STRESS enough the importance of sending notes with your children in regards to CHANGES at the END of the day.  It may seem like it is a hassle to send a note in the am, but already in the first two weeks of school we have been needing to INTERRUPT classes frequently  with changes for students at the end of the day.  We DO REALIZE there are some instances where you are not aware of changes due to unexpected appts and such, and will be happy to let the teachers/students know for these.  Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

LUNCH INFORMATION…….  Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year.  Just a reminder that starting this year, the elementary hot lunch menus will be emailed to you once a month through the district’s School Messenger system.  We do not have the ability to remove individual emails from this system so please feel free to just delete this message each month if you do not want to see the menu.  Hard copies are available at the buildings if you would like one. If you want to print the menu without the colored graphics, please go to our webpage at www.jenhudfood.org to find a less ink version of the menu.  Nutritional information on all of our menus items is also available on our webpage.

Breakfast and lunch will be offered on the first day of school (Tuesday September 6) at all buildings.  If you do not want your child to have access to the lunch program, please contact the food service office at 457-2400 or email lunchacctinfo@hpseagles.net and ask to have your child’s lunch cards pulled.  Please feel free to contact the food service office if you have any questions otherwise our webpage has a lot of valuable information that may help answer any questions.
I hope you have a great start to the new school year and thank you for your business.

Background Check Forms

To ensure safety for all of our students, we are adding a layer of protection that requires all volunteers to submit a background check.  You will receive the paperwork home this week. You can also print the form from this location and send it in with your child at any time.

The form must be completed for parents who plan to support classroom instruction (web reading, center support, general classroom assistance, and field trips).   You can also stop by the office and pick up a form to complete.  All information will be submitted to the Human Resources Department.  LINK to BACKGROUND CHECK.

Each teacher will have a list of parents who have completed the background check.  Volunteers for classroom work and field trips will be pulled from these lists.

Thank you for you help in ensuring that we have a safe climate for learning.

More on Babies!

The Memorial Weekend rain and thunderstorms forced our family to re-organize our weekend priorities.  We managed to pull off a rain free pool party for the Hope Liverpool student teachers on Saturday (thank goodness for a heated pool), but all other outdoor events have been pushed off to Monday—when hopefully the sun will shine again.

baby robinWhile working on my school projects today, I was visiting Mrs. Kuieck’s blog.  She posted a photo of a baby robins nesting in a tree on our 2/3 playground.

This photo shows a baby bird  with open beak waiting for some food to be delivered.  While watching this momma robin build her nest and lay her eggs, the children have asked many questions about why robin’s eggs are blue.  It is the pigment in the bird’s blood that creates the color of the egg shell.  Robin’s happen to have pigments that give their eggs a shade of blue.

Discussions about the baby robins, reminded me of the baby animals  I shared on our school blog during spring vacation (eaglets and giraffe) and wondered if there were new videos on the web highlighting animals born this spring.

I discovered a site sponsored by BBC EARTH called LIFE IS.  They feature a video which demonstrates how important it is for baby elephants to learn how to drink from their trunks.  To watch a baby elephants from a zoo cam, be sure to visit the San Diego Zoo elephant cam.

The web has links to a treasure trove of zoo cams that allow you to view animal behaviors and habitats from home.  Some cams you may want to visit on a rainy day like today:
