WALK•A•THON 2013

walkathon
Greetings parents and students and welcome to the 2013-2014 school year!

We have officially kicked- off our 2013 Walk-a-Thon, which is our primary fundraiser for the year. Our goal is to have all students participate and for each to strive for a personal goal of raising at least $25 to support their school!

Here are some ways you can add some fun on the day of the walk-a-thon:
– Wear blue, gold and Eagle spirit wear
– Paint your face or spray your hair
– Accessorize with socks, bandanas, beads and hats

To make participation easy for everyone, we are holding the event during the school day, where students can walk, jog or run around the course. All participants will receive a special treat at the end of the event.

To find out more about the prizes, check out the presentation below. All questions can be directed to Amanda Impens…or lead organizer for this important event: amandabeaimpens@yahoo.com

Welcome Fall Equinox: Week 4

Our fourth week of school opens with Fall Equinox — day and night in both hemisphere’s will be nearly equal.    And as you know, soon we will be experiencing less daylight and cooler weather. The youtube video below shows how the movement of the sun looks from space.

Our week ahead includes the ANNUAL WALK•A•THON.  Please contribute to this very important event.  It is our only all school fundraiser — and the money earned funds events and tech tools for the 2013-14 school year.

A special post about the walk•a•thon will post separately soon.

Have a great week!

Rainbow Over Georgetown

Rainbow over Georgetown
Rainbow over Georgetown

Did you see the rainbow this morning?  If you didn’t our wonderful crossing guard, Mrs. Fabbro captured it for you.  It was beautiful…and one of those rare times when you could see both arches.  A beautiful start to the day!

This photo also introduces you to the GEORGETOWN WALKATHON which is our BIGGEST BEST and ONLY  fundraiser for the school year.  This is sponsored by our parent club and funds raised go toward tech tools for classrooms and parent/child events.

The PTC have set up excellent prizes for students who participate:

1.  Top earners for the school will have a MAY pool party at the principal’s house!

2. Top earning class will have a limo ride to Pizza Ranch for lunch and dessert.

3. Top earning grade level earners will have a pizza lunch and dessert with Mrs. Reagan (principal).

4.  Drawing for a collection of fun prizes for all to have an opportunity to win.

5.  A BLUE cowbell for all walkathon earners.

Finally…an ALL SCHOOL prize if we raise $15,000 total.

Mr. Rob the WRECKER, international sumo wrestler will wrestle against some of the local Georgetown Sumo Wrestlers.  Names to be announced soon!  Top secret while they are away at the national training camp.

Watch the blog for more breaking news on this!

Week 3: September 16-20

const

It’s our third week….already!   Routines and procedures are very well established due to a great community of learners and staff.

If your child is still not eating lunch, please let your child’s teacher know so that this can be passed along to lunch staff.  It takes awhile for our youngest learners to get used to the lunchroom and we want to make sure we are aware so we can provide extra TLC as necessary.  We add on extra time as needed.  Lunch is important…so please keep us posted.

We kick off the week with PICTURE DAY!  You will see the final results of the photos in late October.  A retake day will be scheduled for those who are absent or need another session.  Photos will be taken in the library.

Tuesday of this week is National Constitution Day — an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the writing of the Constitution.  Each classroom will discuss this historical document on Tuesday in a way that is appropriate to the age group/grade.

We also have another PIZZA NIGHT.  This week…MARCOS.  When you order your family pizza, provide a teacher name.  The class with the most pizza’s ordered under the teacher name will earn a pizza lunch on Marcos.  A portion of all profits goes back to our school PTC — and this money goes toward funding family activities.  Our first Pizza Night was with JET’s.  Winning class:  MRS. WALENTA’s 4th Graders.

At the end of the week, we kick off our one and only PTC all school fundraiser:  THE Trek for Tech Tools WALK-A-THON.  The Walk-a-thon takes place on September 26.  Each student is asked to raise money (asking friends and family to donate money for laps walked at school) with this money funding all of our events this year.  The events are run and managed by parents with the goal of supporting the school/family relationship and supporting learning in the classroom.  Prizes are awarded to top earners at each grade and individual awards.  Details for this will be arriving home soon.   Watch your child’s backpack…blog posts and emails.  This is our single most important fundraiser…and your donations are needed and appreciated!

Have a great week!

Wonderful First Week!

Ready to Learn...and Play!

We had an amazing first week of school!  I think that is was our smoothest kick off since we opened in September of 2006.  Many thanks to all of you (parents) who prepared your children so well and to you (staff) for helping them transition into school routines and expectations.  And…most importantly, thank you to ALL of the children for working hard.

We are excited for another week ahead.  Below is a screenshot of some of our events.  JET’S PIZZA NIGHT is a simple and fun way to take care of a meal for your family AND support the school.  For each pizza order on a pizza night, Georgetown receives a percentage of the profits.  The class that places the most orders receives a pizza lunch.  So, if you order from Jets, be sure to provide the teacher/class name so that your child’s class can get credit.

Have a fantastic week!

Our First Week of School for 2013-14

Beautiful Beckett Children
Beautiful Beckett Children

The staff at Georgetown is so excited to be back to school!  We loved seeing you at the OPEN HOUSES this past week.  I have included a few of my photos in this post.  You can also check out the photo stream (which grows through the year) on the ride sidebar.

During the past two weeks, teachers spent their days in classes learning new strategies for teaching and learning.  The school was

buzzing with conversations about how to meet the needs of our many ability learners and in the background you could hear the lawn mower running, the floor polisher humming and the copy machine JAMMING!  All the normal sounds are back!

Many thanks to our Head Custodian, Mr. Rob Thurkettle and his team for preparing our grounds, the hallways and classrooms this past summer.  Our building is headed into it’s 8th year but because of Mr. Rob’s attention to detail, it looks brand new!

As you prepare for the year, we want you to be aware of these procedure changes.

  • BUS PASSES for Grades 1-5:  Please read through the information on this page.  Children will not be permitted to change busses unless it has been approved by the TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR.   We need you to go through this process so that we are not put in the position of disappointing your child during the day.  We will not allow children to get on a different bus unless  we have permission from Transportation–which they can only provide if you go through the process of requesting a change and this must be done before 10 am the day of the change.
  • Parking for PICK UP:  The front loop will be closed in for end of the day pick up due to the number of busses for dismissal.  We will have five special education busses in the front loop allowing room for our 8-9 general education busses in the rear loop.  Please do not use the front loop for pick up. All parents will be directed to park in the lot next to the fenced K/1 playground.  Mrs. VandenBerg (librarian), Mrs. VanOoyen (one of our invaluable parapros) and myself will be out in front to help direct traffic so that we can help with this new plan.

For all of you who are sending your child off to school (or Georgetown) for the first time, know that we will do our very best to take care of your child.  They may not eat all of their lunch on the first day and maybe not the second, but it will get better.  If it doesn’t let us know so we can help out.  I am always happy to sit down at lunch and help a child feel more comfortable at school.

Here’s to a wonderful week!

Warmly, Mrs. Reagan

PS:  Friday is our first home football game at Eagle Stadium.  Wear Blue and Gold or your Eagle wear to get in the fall spirit.

Guess Who I Ran Into?

The Kuieck Boys Posing with Butch!
The Kuieck Boys Posing with Butch!

While eating dinner with my family, I spied Mrs. Kuieck and her three boys outside the restaurant window.  It was a fun surprise to see them in Holland and to also see them enjoying the Thursday night Street Performers.

I promised the boys I would put them on the blog.  So, now you know, if you run into me outside of school I will take your photo and feature you on the blog.
