Week 36: May 28-June 1, 2013

mem day

We open the school year with Labor Day weekend and close on the heels of the Memorial Day holiday.  Memorial Day is our most solemn holiday — a time for us to remember those who have served and those who are serving today and tomorrow.

We have just 8 days of school remaining to our 2012-13 school year.  The days will be busy with final assessments for June report cards, field trips, locker and desk clean out.  There will also be field days and other various end of the year traditional activities.  Your child’s class blog will provide the most up to date information about these events.

Below is a snap shot of our event this coming week.  Be sure to visit BIGGBY on Tuesday from 6-9pm.  There will be several staff members serving as Barista’s!

Have a great week!

Week a-a-a-a-choooo 35!

Do you feel like you’re looking through green colored glasses?  Are your eyes itchy and your nose sneezy?  If so, you are suffering from spring allergies…and it is a miserable season.  Many of our students (your kids) have watery eyes, headaches, and all the other symptoms that go along with intense allergen exposure.  ACHOO is heard in every classroom!

Highlights of the week ahead are show below.  We open with 5th grade safety White Caps Game and wrap up with our school carnival.  The carnival is sponsored by our PTC and it is a great time for families to play games, eat candy corn and socialize together.

Enjoy the beautiful weekend weather!

The British Have Arrived!

Student Teachers from Hope-Liverpool University, Liverpool England

It is that time of the year when we host student teachers from Hope Liverpool University. Each May term, Hope College participates in an exchange program with Hope Liverpool.  Just as we host their teacher candidates, Liverpool Elementary Schools host Hope College teacher candidates.

The goal of the program is to help these future teachers experience global teaching and Liverpool emblemlearning settings and through that experience understand the commonalities and differences in helping all learners to achieve.

Over the past three years, we have hosted 30 student teachers.   This year, we will host 15 teacher candidates and they will be placed in grades 1-5 and PE.  Some student teachers you may hear about: Miss Mikaela Clarke, Miss Sophie Clarke, Miss Amy Durman,  Mr. Thomas Faulkner, Miss Chloe Leech, Miss Lindsay McQueen, Miss Abigail Warburton and Miss Hannah Whales.

Week 34: May 13-17, 2013

It’s the middle of May which means teachers are racing against the clock to get through necessary learning material before the school year ends.    Your children may be talking about online math tests, MEAP prep work and year end assessments for reading, writing, science and social studies.  All of these assessments need to be completed so teachers can mark report cards for the final time this year.  At the same time, we are busy preparing for next year with new enrollments, class list work and trainings for new Common Core Curriculum and Testing.  Spring time is very, very busy!

We welcome our HOPE LIVERPOOL student teachers and end the week with one of our favorite PTC sponsored events:  POPCORN DAY!

Have a great weekend…and Happy Mother’s Day to all the fabulous mother’s out there!

AN AFRICAN ADVENTURE…….
This summer I will be spending three weeks doing research and working in Africa. I will be teaching African children in a school called St. Timothy’s. Education is extremely important in African culture and their needs are very different from our needs in regards to their education. When asked what they needed, they simply stated three basic things: paper (notebooks), pens, and chalk. I would love it so much if I could bring them the supplies that they need for learning. If you would like to help me support this school and these students, there will be a bin outside the office to collect supplies from May 6-17.  Shipping costs are also expensive. If you would rather make a donation to help with shipping costs, please send it to school with “Ms. VanderStel – Africa donation” written on the envelope! Any extra amount given beyond the shipping will be used to buy more supplies.  Hakuna matata,  Ms. VanderStel

In the News!

We have had two big events that have put Georgetown in the news in the past week.  Our PTC sponsored a mother/son Whitecaps game this past weekend which was featured on NEWS 8.

The event was a great success with beautiful weather and a good ‘ol fashion game of baseball–Whitecaps style!  Many thanks to our PTC for organizing and sponsoring this event.

The second big event was the Team Spencer Junior Race tonight followed by the RiverBank Run this weekend.  Miranda spotlighted this very special project and this will be broadcasted Friday, May 10 at 7 pm on WOTV 4.

Miranda interviews TEAM SPENCER!
