“Mmmmmm,” I muttered dreamily batting my eyelashes on my chocolate brown eyes. “Slurp, slip,” The sauceified noodles blurted slapping my cheeks, dripping down and making lava red splatter marks on the dinner table.
“Good spaghetti Mom,” I fluttered with my mouth full of delicious wonder.
“Yeah, it’s really good Karman,” cheerfully added my friend Mikayla.
“Thanks,” Mom remarked.
“Can we go swimming in bathtub?” I asked. “Sure I’ll go get your bathing suits,” My mom said charging downstairs like a bull, wasting no time to grab them.
“Grupple, grupple,” spewed the drooping faucet, as it erupted, rapidly filling up the bathtub.
“Let’s go through the checklist,” I said in a commander voice.
“Okay,” Mikayla agreed.
“Rubber ducky?”
“Check,”
“Bubbles?”
“Check,”
“Bathing suits,”
“Uh, check,”
“Bathtub,”
“Okay seriously. Who wrote this list? A bathtub really of course there’s a bathtub!”
“One, Two, Three,” We exaggerated gliding into the bathtub.
“Ssssssssssss,” the soapy water SIZZLED as I sunk down drowning all my feelings and thoughts letting them soak into the crystal, clear bubbles that floated up to my neck.
“Hey, Kennedy look,” Mikayla scrambled. “I’m Santa Clause,” she announced putting soapy liquid bubbles on her chin and hair trying to mimic Santa Clause, but not really succeeding.

“That’s funny,” I replied starting to tip my head upside down and flattening it on top of my head!
“I’m George Washington, your first president, now respect me,” I insisted giggling. “Yeah, I can see the resemblance between you two,” Mikayla mocked.
“That was so funny I forgot to laugh,” I mocked back, though she didn’t seem offended.
I gulped in an Enormous gulp when some bubbles dribbled down my throat.
I started coughing, but not just any cough, I was choking! ‘This is it I’m done for,’ I thought. I felt the bubbles cringe my throat strangling me, collecting together, linking arms, forming a stop in my breathing.
Finally, I knew I had to regurgitate the bubbles up, if I wanted to live, which I did. I felt a little touch on my back it was Mikayla helping me get the clogging object out of my throat passage.
“It’s okay Kenz,” Mikayla comforted with her special, warm smile on her face.
‘I shouldn’t have mocked George Washington’ I thought hopelessly. All of a sudden everything got dizzy.
The good news was I got the bubbles out, but the bad news was I threw up all of my ‘delicious wonder’ (spaghetti) into the sink. So from now on I will never ever mock George Washington EVER again!

HAPPY FRIDAY AFTERNOON GEORGETOWN PARENTS!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE…….. WOW, what an exciting and BUSY week here at Georgetown! “Just Write” was held all week long so we had MANY visitors throughout the building reading all of the great stories from the students. Our wonderful Liverpool guests were here with us this past week also if any of your students happened to mention that they had a nice British teacher with them!! We have one more week with the Liverpool students before they return home so make sure your kids all send them off with a great farewell.

MEDS IN THE OFFICE……. This is just a reminder to those of you that have student medication here in the office. It WILL NEED to be PICKED UP before the office closes the week after school. Any medication that has NOT been picked up by WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15 will be discarded. Thank you for remembering this for us! : )

HUDSONVILLE ROCKET CHEER…….. Is your daughter going into 1st-8th grade next fall and interested in cheering? Hudsonville Rocket Cheerleading will be having their sign up dates on Saturday, June 11^th and Saturday, July 23^rd. Registrations will be held at the Hudsonville High School cafeteria from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The cost of registration is $50 and includes an end of year banquet and trophy. An additional uniform cost applies for those that do not have one. Used uniforms will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. The 1st-6th grade girls will be cheering at the Hudsonville Youth Football games and the 7th & 8th grade girls will be cheering at the Hudsonville Club Football games. COMMUNITY NEWS……. St. Balderick’s Fundraiser honoring Bauer Elementary 1st Grader, Ryan TerHaar (Brain Cancer Survivor)…….. The TerHaar family is hosting a St. Baldrick’s event honoring 1st Grader Ryan TerHaar who is a 2 year brain cancer survivor! The event will be held at Bauer Elementary School on Saturday, June 4th from 2 pm – 6pm. A bake sale is being planned as well as a cake walk and kids games.

HOPE COLLEGE SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES…….. Hope College is offering exciting opportunities this summer for students to explore the wonderful world of science and more (over 51 camps to choose from). BLOG BITS 5/13/2011

HAPPY CARNIVAL FRIDAY GEORGETOWN PARENTS!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……. Well what can we say other than it was another good week here at Georgetown. The weather has improved (at least for awhile) and we had many field trips this week for our Kindergartners, 1st graders and our 5th grade safeties. Parents do not forget that tonight, Friday, May 13 is our school Carnival! It will take place between 5:30 and 8:30. Wristbands will be available for anyone 2 or older at the Carnival. It should be a great time for all!!!

Parents please remember that next week is our “Just Write” Celebration. Please make sure you check your child’s teacher’s blog for most current information regarding this event. Times for each grade are also posted at the end of the blog under upcoming events.

NOW for the countdown………… 18 fun filled school days until summer vacation!!!

One VERY important message from the office…… we could really use some help from our Georgetown parents. It would help the office staff AND the teachers greatly if you could PLEASE make sure to send a note in the morning with after school changes or early dismissals. Lately we have been receiving many phone calls and emails to make changes to a student’s regular routine. (Now with that being said, we are aware that there will be the occasional emergency change that will come up). However, when we get calls to make changes for a student it causes us to interrupt the classroom and lately we receive ALOT of these changes at the END of the day and it is very hard to track down the teachers. As far as emails go, the teachers are not able to check their incoming emails multiple times throughout the day as they are busy teaching and some of these messages are getting missed. Notes are great, so if you could please help all of us out and make sure to send these with the students in the morning that would be GREAT!!! : ) Thank you!

SCHOOL CALENDAR……. I am attaching the school calendar for the upcoming school year of 2011/2012. I know this seems way too soon to think about this already, however, I know some people like to plan ahead for vacations. So here you go….. Student-11-12-revised

YEARBOOKS…….. Your student should have brought home their yearbooks home this week. The Office just wants to let you know that we have “extra” yearbooks for sale in the office. These will be sold for $10 per yearbook. They will be available on a first come, first serve basis. If you will be writing a check, please make it payable to “GEORGETOWN ELEMENTARY”.

PTC NEWS……… A Jet’s Pizza Night announcement…….. once again our parents did a great job in participating in this event. Our pizza nights have gone over very well this year!! Thanks to all of you!!! On our past Jet’s night we raised $144 for Georgetown Elementary! The classroom that won the pizza party is Mrs. Jabaay’s T/TH Kindergarten class. Way to go Kindergartners!!

HOME ENERGY AUDIT CLASS…….. The purpose of this class is to give homeowners the knowledge and tools they need to conduct a simple home energy audit. Week 34 of School!

Wow….the final weeks are flying by at amazing speed! As you can see below, we have many events taking place this week. The most important, We have something to say….JUST WRITE! takes place at varied times throughout the next five days. I do have JUST WRITE t-shirts. If you are interested in purchasing one, please download this order form Order Form 2011 and send the money in. You will get the t-shirt on the day that you order it.

We also are hosting 15 student teachers from Liverpool, England. This is an amazing opportunity for them and us. I am sure that you will get a chance to meet them during the JUST WRITE TOUR. Enjoy their accent and brilliant word choice!

The British Are Coming!

It is that time of the year when we host student teachers from Hope Liverpool University. Each May term, Hope College participates in an exchange program with Hope Liverpool. Just as we host their teacher candidates, the Liverpool schools host Hope College teacher candidates.

The goal of the program is to help these future teachers experience global teaching and learning settings and through that experience understand the commonalities and differences in helping all learners to achieve.

Over the past three years, we have hosted 30 student teachers. This year, we will host 15 teacher candidates and they will be placed in grades 1-5 and PE. Some student teacher names your child may be referencing: Miss Blomely, Miss Davies, Miss Ebbrell, Miss Godfree, Miss Penny, Miss Robertson, Miss Whitton, Mr. Sedley, Mr. Fidler, Miss Chivers, Miss Bayliss, Miss Lennon, Miss Chivers, Miss Daly, Miss Smith.

If you come to visit during our JUST WRITE celebrations, be sure to introduce yourself and welcome them to Georgetown.

In three days…

we begin our week long celebration of writing at Georgetown! Each classroom has a designated open house time and these are listed below. These are also on the school calendar!

Many parents ordered JUST WRITE t-shirts for their children. We have a stock of shirts in the office if you are still interested in placing an order. They are $15 each. Simply print this order form (Order Form 2011) and send cash or check to school with your child. (Make checks out to Georgetown Elementary.) We will send the shirt home the same day.

Mrs. Woodring’s first graders are incredibly techno-brilliant. They created this wonderful video with their ipod touches which serves as a digital invitation for all you to attend our celebration next week. Enjoy!

Week 33: May 9-13, 2010

I hope everyone was able to take some time today to honor all mother’s in your life! It certainly was a beautiful day to be outside. The spring weather is long overdue.

We will be hosting GEORGETOWN’s CARNIVAL on Friday of this week. This event will be held after school on Friday and I hope that you can attend. Susie Coxen, Stacey Alexander and many others have worked hard to organize an event that will be fun for families and friends.

The staff at Georgetown will be busily preparing for JUST WRITE…a celebration of our year long work in writing. This event will be held daily next week–with each grade showcasing their stories on different days. Be sure to check your child’s class blog for details. We would love to have you stop by and read our work.

HAPPY FRIDAY AFTERNOON GEORGETOWN PARENTS!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……… Wow what a busy week here at Georgetown. We have just been hopping around here! Our Raey Guang guests arrived here on Wednesday morning and participated in classroom activities and then spent their two evenings with their “host” families. What a great experience for the Raey Guang students as well as for our Georgetown students! Then thanks to our wonderful PTC members and all of the great Georgetown volunteer parents the staff here has been pampered all week long with breakfast and great lunches! Wow, you are all way to good to us!! Thanks for everything from each and everyone of us!

Now for the most exciting news from the office……. only 23 more school days until summer vacation!!! YIPPEE

PTC NEWS………. Well it is that time of year again, Spring Carnival! Woo-Hoo!! CALLING ALL GEORGETOWN BAKERS!!
(Or if you do not tell anyone …… bakery shoppers!) Our wonderful Spring Carnival committee has asked me to put out a PLEA for baked goods for one of our most popular carnival games…. THE CAKEWALK! This game is one of the biggest hits of the carnival. (for both kids and adults!) So we would love to have a great turnout for the amount of baked goods that are donated. Once the baked goods are gone, the game is over. : (
We will GLADLY start accepting the baked goods donations starting WEDNESDAY, MAY 11 in the afternoon here at school. You may just drop them off in the office. These donations will be accepted until 5:00pm on Friday, May 13.

SPRING CARNIVAL….. Is coming right around the corner!! It will be held on Friday, May 13 from 5:30p to 8:30p!! Wristbands purchased in advance will be $8 per person, BUT if you wait they will be $15 the night of!!! The deadline for pre-purchased wristbands is MAY 6th!! COMMUNITY NEWS……. OFF ROAD FAMILY NIGHT/CHARITY RACE…..On Saturday, May 7 at 6:00 pm, West Michigan Off Road is having a Family Night / Charity Race. The community is invited to come and see an off road derby race at the Hudsonville Fair Grounds. Kids 16 and under are free with a paid parent admission.

TASTE OF HUDSONVILLE……On Saturday, May 7th the Hudsonville Band Boosters will be sponsoring “Taste of Hudsonville” in the Hudsonville High School gymnasium from 2-5pm. This community-wide event will showcase food from at least thirteen area restaurants as well as the instrumental music talent of the Hudsonville Band program. In addition to great food and music, a large silent auction and 50/50 raffle will be held. Tickets for the event can be purchased daily in the Hudsonville High School and Middle School offices, in the high school lobby on Tuesdays from 5-6pm, at the Avon Store and at Lake Michigan Credit Union on 32^nd Ave. beginning Monday, April 11^th. Advanced sale tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for children 10 and under (all tickets are an additional $2 at the door).

BENEFIT DINNER FOR ALYSSA CROOK…….. Please read the following flyer in regards to this great benefit!! This is one of our wonderful Baldwin Street Middle School students. HAPPY FRIDAY GEORGETOWN PARENTS!!!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……… Can you believe it……. only ONE more week of APRIL!! Time is flying by, hold on because before you know it school will be done for the year. Just a few quick notes from the office. First of all, now that the weather is getting a little nicer out more students are riding their bikes and ripsticks to school. PLEASE make sure and send a note giving the teachers permission to ride these things home. Unless they have a note the teachers will place them on the bus to go home. The other note that we have for all of you is that in the morning BEFORE school (unless it is raining of course!) students MUST go to their playgrounds. They are not to be coming into the building OR walking through the building to get to their playground. If you as a parent are coming in with your student this is fine. We understand that sometimes you come in to meet with teachers, etc. THANK YOU!!! Know for the COUNTDOWN…….. 33 days until summer vacation!! WOO-HOO!!!

A NOTE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT………. Over the past several years the number of students attending Hudsonville Public Schools has grown significantly. During the past eighteen months we have been exploring options to address this growth. Following a lengthy process of study and community input, the Board of Education unanimously approved a bond proposal to bring to the voters. While this request does not raise the millage rate, it is a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of our growing K-12 student population.

Please join us for a community gathering to review this proposal that will go before the voters on May 3, 2011. Location: Hudsonville High School Auditorium (5037 32nd Ave) Date: Tuesday, April 19. Time: 7:00pm. Thank you!

MAY 3 BOND ELECTION……. We are so fortunate to be in a school community which is growing. Over the past 5 years, Hudsonville Public Schools has
grown by 604 students. This trend is not new to Hudsonville as our enrollment has almost tripled over the last 25 years. In an effort to address the need for additional classroom space, our Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to go before voters with a bond request. The proposal to be voted on May 3 calls for:
•New 9+ building on the existing high school site
•New South Elementary located on Greenly Street
•New competition pool and fine arts auditorium
•New transportation facility
•Reconfiguring the Freshman Campus to an Early Childhood Center
•Technology upgrades to all school buildings
•Athletic upgrades at Baldwin, Riley, and High School
Since the district is part of the School Bond Revolving Fund (SBRF), which the state makes available to rapidly growing districts, we will be able to build the facilities and improvements without a millage increase. Currently, the districts levies 7.0 mills for debt retirement and the rate will remain at 7.0 mills. The total cost of the proposal will be $82,000,000.00. PTC NEWS…….. MOTHER/SON ROCK JAM ~~ CALLING ALL GEORGETOWN MOMS AND SONS: The Georgetown Elementary PTC is inviting you to ROCK JAM on Saturday, May 7 from 6-8:30 at the school. Get ready to have fun and celebrate Mother’s Day in a rockin’ new style with awesome music, dancing, basketball activities with our high school players, games, photos and sweet snacks. Tickets are $15/couple (and $5 for each additional son). The Mother/Son flyer has all of the details and the registration form that must be returned to school by THURSDAY, APRIL 28th with your payment

FEEDING AMERICA WEST MICHIGAN……. Hager Park Church is partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to provide a Mobile Food Pantry on Saturday, April 30th. The food distribution will take place at Bauer Elementary School’s parking lot, located at 8136 – 48th Avenue in Hudsonville, from 10:00 am to Noon. Sign-in is required, although the food is available to anyone that needs it. There will be a large assortment of food, made up of seasonal produce and other high quality groceries.

BLOG BITS 4/15/11

Happy Friday Georgetown Parents!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……. Well Spring Break is over and man did it go FAST!! Looking at the calendar April here at school is fairly quiet, but hold on tight because May is going to be busy!!! Then before you know it school is done! Soooo on that note, I say lets count down the school days until summer vacation…….. 38 days!! : )

FOOD SERVICE NEWS……… Attention Parents: The food service department is going “green” and will be piloting a new program in your building this month. Starting with the April menu, you will receive the monthly lunch menu and deposit slip form by email through the School Messenger system. If you have an email address registered with the school system, you will receive this information the third week of every month. You can also print a copy of the monthly menu off of our web page at www.jenhudfood.org. If you do not have email or access to a computer, you can request from your building secretary to have a paper copy sent home each month. Paper copies will also be available in each building for pickup. Please feel free to contact Stacey at 667-3352 or swykoski@hpseagles.net if you have any questions or concerns.
