We are also preparing for our annual JUST WRITE Celebration.  This will be the week of May 14-18.  We have T-Shirts available for writers to wear on their special celebration day–and we encourage them to have their classmates sign the shirts.  Order forms for this can be found on our JUST WRITE is COMING post.

Of course, there are many other events coming up.  Please pay careful attention to the school calendar and your child’s class blog.  Watch for field trips, field days, celebrations of all kinds and details about the final day of school (June 8 – dismissal at 1 pm.).

PTC Fundraising Needs

It’s really quite easy to raise money for Georgetown. Money raised helps fund field trips, assemblies, Reading Counts, Just Write, classroom materials; as well as art, music, gym, and library expenditures. Thanks for your help!  Click on this PDF for a paper version to print for your refrigerator. Fundraising Flyer 2011-2012

Popcorn Money Request: The PTC is happy to help fund “Popcorn Fridays” throughout the school year. The past couple of years, we have asked for monetary donations to help cover the cost of supplies and the annual cleaning of the popcorn machine. If you can donate just $1 per student to this fund, it would be greatly appreciated. Please send the money to school in an envelope marked “popcorn money” to insure its proper fund assignment. Thanks!!!

The Walk-a-Thon: Our annual Walk-a-Thon is in two days! This year the event will have a “green” theme. It is scheduled for September 21 and 22.

NEW FUNDRAISER for 2011-2012: A Coin War (Replacing Classroom Basket Fundraiser)

This year we thought it might be fun to try a new spring fundraiser: a Coin War. So start saving your coins (but no pennies!) for our competition. Money will go toward classroom learning materials. The collection will occur the week of February conferences: February 27th through March 1st.

Papergator: Don’t forget to bring your newspapers, magazines, old phone books, etc. to the Papergator dumpster in the parking lot. The more we bring, the more money we make for Georgetown!

Spartan Cash for Labels: We receive cash for any UPC symbols clipped from Spartan brand products that you purchase from your local Family Fare and D&W stores. Just clip and collect UPC Symbols from any Spartan brand products (refer to the sample UPC symbol shown here). You can send any collected labels to school with your child, or drop them off in a special drop box that is located outside the office (next to the Box Top and Campbell Soup Label drop boxes).

Campbell Soup Labels: We receive points from certain product labels (Campbell Soup, V8, Spaghetti Os, Pop Secret, etc.) which the school can redeem for items in a catalog. In the past we have redeemed points for playground balls, pencil sharpeners for classrooms and last year we got a wii to encourage students to raise money for the Walk-a-Thon. The orange “Labels for Education” can be brought to the drop box outside the office or sent to school with your child.

Box Tops: Remember to save the little “Box Tops for Education” rectangular labels on various food and household items. Information about competitions will be posted at a later date.

Meijer 1 Card: If you shop at Meijer, please consider getting a Meijer 1 card to scan when making purchases; or you can add Community Rewards to a Meijer credit card. Our school’s organization code is 402529. This site:  MEIJER will walk you through the steps to get your card and help you make your purchases count for Georgetown!

Target “Take Charge of Education:” If you have a Target Red Card, please be sure your card is linked with Georgetown. One percent of your purchases will be donated to our school! Go to the following page to enroll… TARGET

We Found A Dog by Mikayla Meyer

Mikayla

Mikayla’s story,  WE FOUND A DOG,  was selected as worthy of a performance by the 1st grade team for our all school JUST WRITE CELEBRATION.

You can view the teacher performance below.  Congratulations,  Mikayla, on being a JUST RIGHT JUST WRITE author!

We Found a Dog!
by Mikayla Meyer

To my cousin who encouraged me to help the dog find its owner.

It was a bursting hot day.  My family was celebrating my twin cousins’ birthday when… we found a dog, and it wasn’t our dog.  The dog had a collar on, but it didn’t have an address.  So, me, Sierra, Lauren and Whit went around the neighborhood and looked for its owner because Spencer is allergic to dogs and my cousins already have a dog.  Some houses gave us an idea of whose dog it was, but none of them worked.  And, one even told us to call the vet, and it still didn’t work.  After awhile I said, “I’m too tired to go any further!”  So, Whit said, “You can go home if you want?”  But, I didn’t!  We looked and looked until Conner came and told us it was time for us to open presents.  So, we finished our last house.  We couldn’t find the owner.  So, we left the dog in our backyard to see if she would find her owner.  (So she did.)  But, it took a long time for her to leave.  But, we still had an upside down smile on our face.

Car Wash
by:  Sarah Spears

One steaming hot, hot, hot sunny Sunday afternoon when I thought I was going to fry up, I thought of a brillant idea.

“Hey Aaron, do you want to give the car a wash?”, I asked.
“Sure just let me get my swim suit on”, he replied.
“Ok”, I answered.  “I’ll be waiting outside.”

Well it only took a few seconds to get the car wet and start scrubbing when another idea came to my head.  That’s when a car with a window drove right past our house and I yelled……..

“FREE CAR WASH!!!!!”

The lady in the car looked at me like I was CRAZY!

“Oh brother!!!!”, I thought. “She probably thinks I am crazy!”

Well, more and more cars past and Aaron and I kept yelling…..

“FREE CAR WASH, FREE CAR WASH!!!!”

But still everyone thought we were crazy!  After a few minutes a motorcycle rode by and Aaron yelled, “FREE MOTOR WASH!!”

I wish people would have come, but oh well it was still fun.

Paintball at Spring Hill Camp

by Spencer Alexander

“Hurry get on the train Spencer it’s about to leave!” Tom screamed.

It was around nine o’clock in the morning at Spring Hill Camp, the best summer camp ever. The sun was shining through the trees and there was  a slight breeze.  At that moment I said to my self, “It’s a perfect day for paintball.”

At around nine fifteen my team and I were at the front of the paintball field. The first thing I noticed was a giant net, but I looked closer and there it was, the paintball field.  There were also bunkers, pillboxes, and fox holes.

Next, I ran to the new paintball shack and reserved all of my supplies,  which consists of a paintball gun, mask, Co2, and ammunition.  After that my team and I hit the field.  We took the far side of the field, and the other team took the other side.  At last, everyone was waiting for the whistle to blow.

“Go, go, go!” one of the older kids yelled at me, “Spencer get in that bunker, and make sure the other team doesn’t take it!”

So I did, but I should not have listened to that older kid because now I was down on my back and couldn’t move or I would get shot.

Finally, about five minutes into the game one of our bunker busters shot their machine gunner. So when I had the chance, I jumped up out of the hole and sprinted around to find a sniping spot. I settled around a big fat thick soggy smelly log.

After finding a spot, I immediately started to fire my gun. I actually hit about three guys, even though that does not seem like a lot. There was a total of fifteen team members on their team. But when I ducked down to reload my gun I heard, “Surround him.” I looked up and found four people where looking me straight into my eyes. I realized at about that time that I was ambushed.

But within seconds, four paintballs were about to hit me! It felt like one hundred hornets had stung me in my chest. When I started to crawl out of the field I realized it does not matter, I got out because I had a whole week left at summer camp!

Wow, that week must have gone by quickly because before I new it, my week at camp was over. I will always remember the time I had at Spring Hill summer camp, forever.  I have already reserved my spot for next summer, and I will be bringing a few friends with me.  I cannot wait!

Wake Up
By Hannah Eggers

It was 7:00 am in the house. I went out of my door. I was going to play a trick on my brother. I was going to wake Caleb up.
“Was that a good plan or was it like the time I threw eggs on the walls?” I thought to myself.
“Oh, well, I’ll just do the trick. I said in my head.
I went quick and quietly to his room. I opened his door and tip-toed to his bed. I slowly bent down and screamed as loud as I could into his ear. I tried to escape quickly but he saw me and yelled, “ I WILL GET YOU!”
He needs a conscience or needs to do yoga or eat a spicy Italian sandwich from Subway. I’ll use my noise maker when I scare Caleb again.
