SUMMER HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

Host Families are needed (of any size, age, etc.) to open up their home for 4 or 6 weeks this summer for teenage students from Spain who are coming to this area to practice their (already good) English.

The 4-week program is roughly June 25-July 23 (dates to be determined), and the students attend activities every Tue/Thu out of Hudsonville.  The 6-week program is roughlyJune 26-August 6 (dates to be determined), and these students do not attend any activities but only live with the host family.

Both programs are flexible and students may go on vacation or to summer camp with you.  Students come fully insured and with their own spending money.  Host Families are also needed for the school year for public or private high schools. Please contact Mayah Bischoff at mayah.bischoff1@gmail.com or 616-607-4769 for more information.

Rolling into a 2014 Routine!

We are hoping for a five day week of routine.  A week without an ice day, snow day, wind chill day and a polar vortex day.  As fun as snow days can be — every now and then — three in a row crimps our teaching and learning routine. So, kids…no more snow day tricks like ice cubes in the toilet and wearing  your PJ’s inside out because we have some catching up to do at school!

This week our fourth graders finish up their swimming lessons at the high school.  We also have another school pizza night — this time with Marco’s.  Remember….if you order a pizza, pass along the teacher’s name and your child’s class will get credit.  The orders are tallied by class and the winning class receives a pizza lunch at school.  This is one of the many fundraising events that our PTC board organizes.  All profits going toward supporting family and school events.

Remember to check your child’s class blog for events that are classroom specific.

Have a great week!

Surviving the 2014 Polar Vortex

polar vortexThe extreme cold weather has expanded our vocabulary with words/phrases such as:  polar vortex, drifting, wind chill, accumulation, lake effect, advisory, warning, etc.  While working on this post, I searched for a “I survived t-shirt” and of course a screen printing company has sissiesseized the moment!  Although I do have to say, that I do believe that this t-shirt sums up our state hardiness best.

Even though roads are still extremely slick, I am very hopeful that the conditions improve for tomorrow morning.  I am more than ready to have everyone back to school.

Please PLEASE make sure you send your child to school with ample outdoor clothing.  We will not send the children outdoors for recess if wind chills are below zero — but keep in mind this can change throughout the day.  I want all the children to be protected if they are outdoors — even if walking to and from the busses.

Also, the school will be chilly inside as well.  It will take sometime for our system to catch up and heat all the rooms evenly.   Layers of indoor clothing will be helpful for these cold winter days.

Looking forward to getting the second half of the year started!  Mrs. Reagan

Hand to Hand: THANK YOU

hand2handDid you know that we have a Hand2Hand program at Georgetown?  It is run by Georgetown parents who volunteer their time, working closely with Chapel Pointe Church to provide weekly food donations to certain families in our school.  The chair of this program, Shelly Telfor has been instrumental in starting and maintaining this program — and has continued to serve as the lead coordinator long after her children have graduated from Georgetown.  Shelly works closely with a team of volunteers who each week quietly and stealthy deliver bags of food to student lockers — A total of 603 food bags in the past year!

Shelly completed an annual report which outlines the number of families touched by the program.  I am sharing this report with you because it is programs such that exemplify the caring service oriented characteristics of our school community.

Many thanks to Shelly and her team for ALL that they do for our school families.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2014

NOTE:  School has been cancelled for Monday, January 6, 2014 due to dangerously cold conditions.  The Girls on the Run Shoe Fitting will be rescheduled—date to be determined.

While we were away, we kicked off the new year!  It is officially 2014 — and it feels like it is going to be another great year!

I hope that you had a wonderful holiday vacation with family and friends.  As we re-enter the school environment and schedule, we will be easing into our usual routines and help our students turn re-activate their learning brains.

If you are a parent of a fourth grader, remember to get ready for swimming which begins on Monday.   All school JET’S PIZZA NIGHT is Tuesday.  The week wraps up with Friday POPCORN DAY….a great way to kick off the first week of January.

Please be sure to check out your child’s class blog for updates that are specific to the classroom level.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Reagan
