A SHORT WEEK AHEAD

In preparation for the Thanksgiving Holiday, we will have just two days of school this week.

When we return the following week, the PTC Holiday Gift Shop will be open and we will rehearsing/preparing for our all school holiday musical performance on Thursday, December 1 at Fair Haven Ministries.

As we have mentioned in early blog posts, the performance will be divided into two performances:  PK-2 from 6-6:30 and Grade 3-5 from 7:15-7:45 pm.  Details about the arrival time for each group will go home next week via email, the blogs and paper copies.  We want to make sure we reach parents with all communication tools to inform you about this event.

November 14-18: Eleventh Week of School

While looking through the morning paper today, I realized that Thanksgiving was just a week and a half away.   I simply can’t believe the holidays are right around the corner.

We’ll have five days of school this week, followed by a two days next week.  School is closed on Wednesday, November 23-25 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Our Holiday Musical Program is just around the corner.  We will be performing on December 1 at Fair Haven Ministries on the corner of 28th St and Baldwin St.    The PK-2 children will perform from 6-6:30 pm.  Our children in grades 3-5 will perform from 7:15-7:45 pm.

We have held the performance in the past at Res Life Church in Grandville.  This church could accommodate all of us for ONE performance.  However, the rental costs for this facility do not fit into our 2011-12 budget.   A move to Fair Haven was necessary due to budget contraints.  We are very grateful to Fair Haven Ministries for renting their facility to us for the 2011 holiday performance.

More details about the performances will be available after Thanksgiving.

Have a great week!

A very busy week ahead!

It’s our 10th week of school and to celebrate we have packed our schedule with important and excited events.  This week is all about the two things we value most at our school:  CHILDREN AND PARENTS.

Our incredible Parent Teacher Club will be sponsoring an ALL SCHOOL ASSEMBLY on Monday (Jerry Jacoby’s Character and Integrity Traits) and the Scholastic BOOK FAIR (Monday-Friday in the Early El Sensory Motor Room).  In addition, the PT Club is also sponsoring a dinner for teachers on Monday from 4-5pm to kick off Parent Teacher Conferences.  Thank you, PARENTS for doing this for us!  It is such a treat to know that one night this week we do not have to worry about dinner plans.

We wrap up the busy week with COMFY COZY DAY on Friday.  It’s a day to learn in slippers, sweatshirts and sweatpants…anything comfy and cozy!

We are looking forward to meeting with parents this week to share the amazing progress your children have made as learners during the first 48 days of school.  During PT Conferences, you will hear me call the end times for each conference over the school speaker system.  This is done to help teachers and parents stay on time in a BE NICE way.  We want to make the 15 minutes focused and meaningful…and also honor your time by staying on TIME.

Here’s to a great week!

BOO! It’s Week 9 of SCHOOL!

It’s rare that we begin our week in such a boo-rific way.   Many classrooms will celebrate Halloween on Monday which prepares you for an evening of trick or treating with your children.  (NOTE:  PK/K and Mrs. Bouwen’s 5th grade class celebrated Halloween last week.)

As we look ahead to Tuesday-Friday, we would appreciate a very limited supply of candy in the children’s lunches.  To help them recover from Halloween, we advocate extra sleep and limited amounts of sugar during the day.  We always advocate for healthy snacks during the school day.

This coming Friday is POPCORN DAY!   And mark your calendars for the end of Daylight Savings Time on Friday, November 6.  We will FALL BACK one hour and resume our normal amount of daylight until early April of 2012.

Here’s to a great week!

Our 8th Week of School!

WOW!  We are into our 8th week of school.  Truly, this year is flying by at breakneck speed.

We finished our MEAP testing (grades 3-5) last week and all of our students worked exceptionally hard to do their best on these tests.  The tests were harder and this required more intense focus for our students.  We are relieved to have these behind us.  An upcoming post (later this week), will provide information about the new cut scores for the MEAP for the coming year.  Not only are the tests harder, they are also going to be scored harder.  As always, we are working at a rapid pace to keep up with the state requirements and making changes to our curriculum to support our learners.

The week ahead looks calm and quiet from the school snapshot end….but, as always, I encourage you to check your child’s class blog for special events or announcements at the classroom level.

The big excitement this week will be the district wide PE sponsored Turkey Trot!  This will happen on Tuesday and it will be held at the Baldwin Stadium.  I will be there with my camera and my Turkey Trot shirt.  Let’s hope for nice weather.

Halloween celebrations will be happening this coming Thursday through next Monday.  Because there are multiple classrooms celebrating on different days, you will need to visit class blogs for dates/times.

Have a great week!

A Four Day Week Ahead: October 17-20

It is our 7th week of school!  We have established great routines and procedures for learning, eating and playing together.

During the coming week, our students in grades 3-5 will complete their MEAP assessments.  There will be no school for all students on Friday, October 21.  The teachers and I will be scheduling parent teacher conferences and working on report cards.

If you have not yet provided us with your preferred day for conferences, please complete this survey as soon as possible.

Remember…MARCO’S PIZZA NIGHT IS ON WEDNESDAY.

Have a great week!

Another Beautiful Week Ahead

As we begin week 6, we are happily embracing the gorgeous fall weather…knowing that soon it will be dark longer and much colder!

Many thanks to our PTC for the best ever popcorn Friday!  I wish all of you could have seen the happy faces when the popcorn was delivered to classrooms.  And, my thought was this:  What a simple treat that makes an ordinary Friday special and fun.

Our week ahead has field trips for our PK classes, fire safety for grades PK, K and 4th  and MEAP testing for our learners in grades 3-5.  The MEAP tests are administered over a four day period and the results determine our school ranking in the state.  We take the tests seriously focusing on high quality instruction throughout the year in grades PK-5 as the best source of preparation.

I hope you are enjoying the stunning weather this weekend!  Here’s to a great week ahead.

October Has Arrived!

October signals autumn’s arrival–time for apple picking, pumpkin carving and all things spooky.

Did you know that October is also the month to recognize animal safety & protection, baking & decorating, caramel, chili, chiropractic, crime prevention, dental hygiene, Down syndrome, ergonomics, field trips, kitchens & baths, medical librarians, orthodontic health, physical therapy, reading groups, roller skating, RSV awareness, sarcasm awareness, seafood, spina bifida awareness, world blindness awareness, emotional intelligence, Polish American heritage, positive attitudes, workplace politics and raptors (yes, raptors).

My personal favorites for October:   It is National Squirrel Awareness Month and October 12 is International Moment of Frustration Scream Day.    And, you thought October was all about Halloween!

The weather forecast for this coming week will set us up for a perfect start to the month. A snapshot of our school events is below.  Remember, Jet’s Pizza Night is on Tuesday and Friday is our first PTC sponsored Popcorn Day.  Enjoy your week!
