Week 23: February 20-24, 2012

I hope your winter (slash that) mini-SPRING break was fantastic!  Teachers were very busy on Thursday working on assessments and report cards.  I am hopeful that everyone was able to use the extra day or two for rest and fun–which is well deserved all around.

I must admit, as far as the weather is concerned, I have crossed over from mourning the lack of snow to hoping we can push this weather through March and straight into spring.

This is our last full week of February — welcoming March in next week. The schedule below is a snapshot view.  Be sure to check out your child’s class blog for additional details.

Health Education Update

From our Curriculum Office:

In compliance with Michigan law, the HPS Sex Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) has approved a program of instruction for teaching students about blood borne illnesses including HIV/AIDS. Lessons specific to HIV/AIDS are taught as part of a comprehensive K – 12 health curriculum.  We have recently updated the 5th grade heath curriculum to include a lesson on blood borne illnesses to align with the Michigan standards.

According to Michigan law, public review of new or revised health curricula must be provided prior to formal board approval.  Therefore, we are making the new 5th grade HIV/AIDS lesson available for parent review until February 22.  Our next step will be to seek final board approval to include this lesson in our comprehensive health program.

Appreciate Your Teacher

Barnes and Noble Booksellers is hosting a very special contest this month: The Teacher Appreciation Writing Contest.

Who Can Participate:  Students in Grades 1 through 12
Here’s How It Works:  Students write an essay, poem, or thank-you letter (500 words or less, in English on 8.5″ x 11″ white paper) sharing how a teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them.  Each entry should be submitted with the entry form and a parent or legal guardian must sign the entry form acknowledging that they have read the Official Contest Rules:  BN Teacher Contest
Turn your essay into our office by March 1 so we can submit to our local Barnes and Noble store.  Deadline for entries is March 1, 2012. Winners are selected, and the local store and community celebrations begin!
What Students Get: The students who author the winning essays, poems, or thank-you letters will receive a certificate of recognition and be honored at their local store during a ceremony for the winning teachers from their schools.
What Teachers Get: The winning teachers will be recognized at a special event at their local Barnes & Noble store and will receive a special award acknowledging their achievement, together with a selection of Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classics series (for high school teachers) or a set of five (5) Classic Starts® series (for grades 1-5 and grades 6-8 teachers).
The six regional winners will each receive a NOOK™ eBook Reader and a $500 Barnes & Noble Gift Card. The winner of the “Barnes & Noble Teacher of the Year” award will receive $5,000 and will be recognized at a special event at a Barnes & Noble store. The winning teacher’s school will receive $5,000 as well.
The winner will also receive five copies of the winning essay published in hardcover by Tikatok.com, the site where students create and publish their own books, and a $250 Tikatok Gift Card that will allow the teacher to publish select stories written by students in their class.

Can you find Georgia Lea?

Welcome to Georgetown, Georgia Lea!

Hiding somewhere in our school is a special pet for our school.  She is 10 year’s old and her owner, Rob Shryock, is now a college student at Reed College in Oregon.  He has cared for her since she was a baby…and now we are trusted with her care.

Rob gave her the name of Lea (Lee – a) and I added Georgia to help her feel at home at Georgetown.

What kind of an animal is Georgia Lea?

What does she eat?

Where is she living at Georgetown?

  • Hmmmm…..you will have to see if you can find her!

When you do find her, please make sure you stay calm and keep your hands to yourself—not on her home.

Would you like a giant to come and stand over your house and pound on the windows?  This is what Georgia Lea feels like if we tap on the glass.  Please respect her habitat.

We will have special updates about Georgia Lea on our blog.  If you are interested in researching leopard geckos, observing and photographing Georgia Lea and using this information to write a blog post, please let me know.  I would love to feature guest gecko bloggers on our school blog.
