BLOG BITS 3/2/12

Happy first Friday of March Georgetown Parents!

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……..  Well here we go…… ONLY 19 school days until Spring Break!!   The countdown has begun.  Let’s just hope that since March came in like a lamb that it will NOT leave like a LION?!?!  We had a very busy 4 day week here at Georgetown.  Conferences went very well and once again we had a great turnout.  Coin Wars were also a big hit!  We are all hoping that it will be a great fund raiser for our school.  We will be sure and let everyone know how we did and who are the winning classrooms!

Parents please be sure to update phone numbers in the office if any of yours have  changed.  Whether it be home, work or cell.  After we had our snow day last week some parents realized that their numbers were not correct in our system and should have  been updated.  Just send us an email or call the office and we will be happy to update these for you.

PK/K Parents…… please make note that next Friday, March 9 is a MONDAY/WEDNESDAY attendance day.  It gets a little confusing sometimes when we have a Friday off and the on/off schedule gets mixed up.  : )

PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS NEEDED…….. Send in your plastic grocery bags!  The Girls Scouts will be making plastic mats from recycled grocery bags to send to Haiti.  A collection box will be available outside of the office for the next few weeks.  Thanks!

5TH GRADE NEWS………  Immunization Requirements for 2012-2013 School Year ~ All incoming 6th graders (current 5th grade students) will have the immunization requirements as stated below:

1.  Two doses of Varicella vaccine or have a history of having chickenpox.
2.  One dose of meningococcal vaccine. (Students must be 11 yrs old before getting this dose)
3.  One dose of tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis (Tdap) (if 5 years or more have passed since last dose of tetanus/diphtheria vaccine – DTaP, Td or DT).

If your child needs immunizations, please make work of completing these immunizations during the 5th grade school year. Doing so will be a great help to the Middle School Secretaries who need to check for immunization compliance for every 6th grade student in our district.

Please be advised that any child who has not had all of his/her immunizations will not be allowed to start 6th grade.

A Busy Week Ahead!

I hope you had a great snow day!   Thank you to everyone who sent photos to share on the blog.  The day was as an unexpected surprise for many—and the teachers considered an bonus day for finishing up report cards and preparations for conferences.

Throughout this week, we will be hosting our PTC COIN WAR.  This is our final and very important fundraiser for PTC.  The money collected will build the PTC budget for critical school events that are focused on supporting family activities and learning.  Please send in your silver coins so that the PTC can continue all the good that it does for our school community!

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. I will have the esteemed role of TIME KEEPER which means you will hear my voice every 15 over the intercom announcing the end of each conference period.

We also have LEAP DAY on February 29...a special day that appears just once every four years.  If you know anyone who has a birthday on this special day, make sure you remember them with a special birthday wish!

On the first day of March,  we will have our DRESS LIKE A PE TEACHER theme day. Every staff member and student is encouraged to wear PE apparel and dress as a PE teacher.  It’s our way of celebrating Mrs. Neinhuis and Mrs. VanKoevering…two incredible PE teachers who make a big impact on our health and wellness at Georgetown.

Remember:  NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY.  Teachers will be working hard on professional development activities….learning strategies for improving instruction for all learners.

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Reagan

Why do we have LEAP YEARS?

The year 2012 is a LEAP YEAR which means we have one additional day in the month of February and as a result, one additional day in  our year.

It takes 365 days plus a little more for the earth to travel around the sun.   This “little bit more” is evened out every four years with an extra day–February 29.

Babies born on this special day, celebrate on their actual birthdate once every four years.  On their non-leap year birthdays, they must celebrate on a day close to February 29–February 28 or March 1.

Visit HOW STUFF WORKS for more information about the purpose of  LEAP YEARs.

Easing into a Snow Day…Bell Style

A Perfect Start to a Snow Day: Time to Read

Allie and Carson Bell eased into their snow day with reading, legos and stuffed animal time.

Here is Carson watching instructional videos on you tube to design his own Lego clone troopers.

Carson: A Focused Builder

Allie was quite disappointed to have a snow day. Her class was having stuffed animal day, BUT we decided the animals could enjoy a snow day too! So they are all dressed in their PJ’s.    (And…don’t worry Allie–I think Miss Taber will re-schedule your stuffed animal day!)

Snow Day Fun with the Ham Kid’s

ZOOOOOOOOM!

Dear Mrs. Reagan,
I am having so much fun playing in the snow today with my sister and brother.

We made a huge snowman.  It is taller than my mom.  Today was an awesome snow day

I miss school though. See you next week!

Love,
Annelise (and Ava and Tate)

The Ham Snowman

Dear Annelise,

I love the pictures you sent my way of you, Ava and Tate having the best snow day ever.  I missed seeing you at school…it is so quiet when I am there by myself!

I am glad that your snow day was the best ever!

See you on Monday.

Mrs. Reagan
