Just Write Celebration was Just Perfect

Thank you to everyone who celebrated our writing with us last week!  We had visitors from all places–near and far—and visitors who were special to us in many ways (grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, cousins, friends, teachers, principals, board members and administrators).

Our stories (students and staff) were published on posters, lockers, in classrooms and in published books via  lulu.com.  If you did not get a chance to visit last week, please stop by this week.  The posters will remain up through June 7 when the writers will bring them home!

The slide show below highlights some of the events that took place.  We concluded the week with our traditional JUST WRITE PERFORMANCES.  Each grade level team (PK-5) selected a story worth performing.  This year we also had a new category…the specialists (art, music and pe) who selected a story that lent itself to the specials. These stories were video recorded and can be found on the JUST WRITE tab above.  We hope you enjoy them as much as we loved performing them for the students.

If you haven’t heard, one of the most important all school celebrations is fast approaching.  The week of May 24-28 is our opportunity to honor 600 writers–students in grades PK-5, teachers and the principal.   This will be our fourth annual celebration.

The week is organized into classroom celebrations which include a reading of their stories, tour of posted poster stories displayed throughout the building, and a scavenger hunt.  Parents and special guests are invited to attend these events.  Each teacher will be posting their celebration/tour time on their classroom blogs.

JWSchedule

In addition to the tours of student writing pieces (displayed on lockers) and specially selected poster stories on display throughout the hallways, the rotunda will also be filled with published classroom anthologies.  During the past two years, writers select their best piece to be published through an online book site called lulu.com.  Please take time to see our publications in the rotunda.   We will be sure to send you the link to our published stories once we have these on the lulu site.

We also have a tradition of wearing special designed Just Write T-Shirts on that day.  If you would like to purchase one for your child, you can download the order form and send this into the office.  Just Write T-Shirt Order Form We will accept orders through May 5.

If you would like to view a photo video from last years celebration, visit the MAY 2009 blog post.

We look forward to celebrating our writing work with you.

Just Write: A Celebration in May

We are in our second year of developing our writing skills–both process and craft.  In May, we will be holding our second annual, We have something to say…JUST WRITE!  Celebration.  For this event, each writer (and this includes staff members) selects a piece of writing to publish professionally.  In addition, we post writing around the building and on our blogs.  There are many other events that take place, and details will be shared as the date draws nearer.  In the meantime, I would like to invite you to visit the stories that were published last May on the lulu.com site.  Any of these titles can be purchased or downloaded for free. To view our books at the lulu.com location, simply type Georgetown Elementary into the search area.

Six Writers Honored by Our Actors Guild

Thank you to everyone who visited our wonderful school to meet our incredible writers last week.  We ended our week of writing celebrations by selecting six stories (one from each grade) for our Georgetown Actors Guild.  Each group of actors performed the story for the author and the student body.  Some of the stories involved a teensy bit of improv and really creative costumes.

You can read the original pieces of writing here:  JUST WRITE SKIT Stories.  The slide show below highlights each author and the actors who performed!

Remember, if you have something to say, JUST WRITE!

It’s Just A Dream by Brooklyn Woody

Brooklyn’s story, It’s Just A Dream, was selected as worthy of a performance by the 4th grade team.

You can view the teacher performance below.  Congratulations Brooklyn on being a JUST RIGHT JUST WRITE author!

It’s Just a Dream
By Brooklyn Woody

“Dad, I’m home’‘ shouted Emily.
‘‘Your just in time for dinner,” said Emily’s dad in a joyful mood.
‘‘What are we having?’‘ asked Emily.
‘‘Your favorite … spaghetti!”
‘‘Yum!’’ said Emily rubbing her hand’s together.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
“Yummy this is good,’’ said Emily finishing her plate.
“Up to sleepy head!’’ her dad ordered.
‘‘Fine!’’ said Emily in a sassy tone.
‘‘Come on, go!’’ ordered dad.
“Thump Thump Thump’ went the stairs as Emily stomped up to her room. ‘‘Good night,’’ said Emily sleepily laying in her bed.

In the middle of the night, Emily heard a noise, so she woke up with her cat Alissa laying on her face! “Off Alissa, off!’’ Emily ordered. When Alissa got off Emily went on the balcony, and there was a shooting star! When she was about to make her wish her stomach growled. “I wish it could rain gummy worms!’’ she whispered to her self then she went back to bed.

The next day, Emily was in Math class she and her class mates heard a loud noise:
BOOM!!!!!

Everyone looked out the window saw a GIANT colorful gummy worm! Every single kid in Emily’s class ran outside and began eating the over sized gummy worm. After an hour or two, kids started getting chubbier and chubbier and the worms were getting bigger and bigger! Soon gummy worms were falling down like there was no tomorrow! Then, Emily started to hear a voice. ‘‘It’s all your fault!’‘ yelled a man.

‘‘No it’s not!’‘ shouted an angry woman. Then Emily’s seat partner remembered that when the first gummy worm fell Emily had said, ‘‘My wish came true!’’

Everyone in town turned to a angry mob and started chasing Emily all around until Emily saw a shadow getting bigger and bigger above her head! BOOM!

Just then, her dad walked into her bedroom. Emily looked at him and said, “Good morning, dad. I just had the weirdest dream.’’
