A COUPLE OF TIDBITS FROM THE OFFICE

FIRST ITEM: SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH
With snow just around the corner, the food service program
would like to remind parents and students about what will
happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district is
closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow
day will be moved to the next school day. An example: if
school is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s
menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was
scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.
Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be
no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to
order a lunch if they need one. The only exception to this
policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s
menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with
the regular menu on Monday. Information on what menu will
be served on the day you return will be available on the food
service web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to
contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have
any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thank

SECOND ITEM:

Just a friendly reminder from the office……..  PLEASE remember to send a note in the morning to your child’s teacher if you will be picking them up at the end of the day. The office is very busy towards the end of the day and it can be very hard to contact the teachers about end of the day changes due to the students being at specials and the teachers getting ready for the buses.  Thankk you for your consideration in this matter!

First Grade ROCKS!

Can I just say this, “THE FIRST GRADERS AT GEORGETOWN ROCK!” I am the luckiest principal in the world because I get to listen to first graders read every week.   For those of you who have forgotten how much brain power it takes to read, try to read to the principal after lunch!

This past week, I had the honor of spending an hour PLUS a few extra minutes teaching Mrs. Stadt’s first grade class. They won the prize for the October Blog Scavenger Hunt. As winners of this most sought after prize, Mrs. Stadt got to work on “teacher stuff” and I got to teach the first graders “principal stuff.”

I picked up Mrs. Stadt’s class after lunch, and while she was looking the other way, we disappeared into a secret location. (My contract does not allow me to disclose this information on the blog.  To find out, you must interview a first grade student from Room 106.)

Once we landed back in the classroom, we got down to very serious work.  We reviewed the principal’s job description which includes (but is not limited to) the following:

  1. Making announcements
  2. Helping kids who are sick
  3. Helping kids who are hurt
  4. Making sure kids are nice (and teacher’s too)
  5. Keeping the building safe
  6. Heating and cooling the school
  7. Buying food for kids to eat
  8. Helping teachers teach
  9. Buying crayons and post it notes
  10. Making calls on the 2-way radio

Once this was done, I demonstrated how the 2-way works -assisted by Mrs. VandenBerg who was in the office.  Each student then received the BEST EVER principal supply kit:  a notepad for lists (principal must have), small post-it notes (memory keepers), washable marker (for the principal who always writes notes on her hand) and a very cool paper clip.

NEXT, each first grader wrote in their very best first grade spelling “IF I WERE THE PRINCIPAL, I WOULD….” I expected responses like “give extra recesses to all the kids”  or  “make no homework the rule”  but instead, these first graders wrote about wanting to BE NICE to others, make sure everyone had food for lunch, and help kids make friends on the playground.  Each one of these students can feel free to list me on their resumes when they apply for their first principal job!

We took our very special writing projects down to the copy room where each child made two copies—one for me and one for them–on our GINORMOUS copy machine. Following this, we headed over to the conference room for an important meeting (see the principal thinking faces below), toured the principal’s office (where we picked up a special snack) and then headed to Art Class…a wee bit late.

After Art Class, I took the principal’s in training for a WELL DESERVED break in the teacher’s lounge. I delivered the first graders back to the classroom in time for them to complete agendas and pack up for the day.

Pizza Lunch with A Special 2nd Grader

Over 120 students entered the October Blog Scavenger Hunt! The individual winner of this hunt was a very special second grader from Mrs. Greenlund’s classroom. I gave Jordyn the option of going anywhere for lunch and she chose to have JET’s Pizza with me at school.  (Jet’s makes frequent deliveries to our building!)

We ate our pizza and talked about fun topics that included Halloween candy totals, puppies, cousins, Thanksgiving celebrations and how much she loves her little sister.

Having lunch with Jordyn was the best part of my day on Thursday!

A December Art Fair

Our art students have been working hard to create spectacular artwork for this fun event.  Your child’s artwork will be displayed in a beautiful mat and frame which can be purchased in the frame during the art fair.

There will be a make-n-take craft table with holiday cards and door prizes too!

Your child will be bringing home an Art Fair invitation soon – please return the RSVP card to school, since this will indicate the number of frames and supplies we need to order for the event.

Come celebrate your child’s creativity!

What:  Kids Art Fair
When: Tuesday, December 1st from 4-7 PM

Scavenger Hunt Winners

The winners of the October Scavenger Hunt are as follows:

  • Mrs. Stadt’s Class: Most students to participate in the blog hunt.  They will receive one hour of “Principal Time” in the coming week!
  • And, Jordyn, in Mrs. Greenlund’s class who will receive a gift card to Barnes and Noble and lunch OUT to a restaurant of her choice with the principal, Mrs. Reagan!

There were 120 students who participated in the scavenger hunt.  Each of the participates will be entered into the reading counts drawing…and this will take place on December 15.

Posted below is a slide show of the hour I spent with Mrs. McDonald’s class-–winners of the September Scavenger Hunt.   We spent an hour writing together in a top secret location.  See if you can tell from the photos where we were!

And…we will have one final scavenger hunt in November that is focused on teachers.  The prizes will be a little different with more chances to win.  Watch the blog for clues.

School Funding Emergency

Time is running out.  Our Governor and legislative leaders in Lansing are proposing devastating cuts to public education.  In addition to the $165 per pupil cut to all public schools, the State Budget Director has notified school leaders another $127 per pupil cut is coming in less than 30 days.  The only way this will not happen is if our Governor and legislators can agree to a funding solution addressing the revenue shortfall.  To find out how to help prevent this funding crisis, please listen to my message and visit the links here:   FUNDING CRISIS

The Flu: A Tool for Learning

With all the coverage about the flu, it is a great opportunity to learn new information.  Not my favorite topic of learning, I must admit — but I have stumbled upon some interesting articles.

A friend of mine sent me a link to a video showing how a virus spreads from one person to the next with one uncovered sneeze.   After watching this, you should be convinced to always sneeze into your elbow.   The video can be found here:   Your body on the fluflu

While driving home from school on Friday, I listened to the NPR segment Science Friday.  Ira Flatow interviewed research on the specifics of washing your hands appropriately.  I was reminded how critical it is to use soap for releasing the dirt and germs from the skin.  If you are interested, check out this podcast found here:  How to Wash Your Hands

And, a reminder: If your child has a fever, PLEASE do not send them back to school unless they have been fever free (with no meds) for 24 hours. The H1N1 virus that is moving through our school is very contagious.  We are working as hard as we can to keep all surfaces clean.  Please help us by keeping your sick ones home.

Scavenger Hunt Pressure

It’s time for me to stir up a little scavenger hunt competition!  I have extended the deadline to Monday, October 26.  The original deadline was Friday, Oct 23–but students do not have school on that day.

So far, we have had over 40 students and three teachers enter the competition.  The class that has the MOST students (along with their teacher) enter wins ONE HOUR WITH THE PRINCIPAL. The current breakdown is as follows:Scav Hunt

So…while you are on your three day weekend from school…staying healthy…read up on teacher’s hobbies and enter the scavenger hunt!

Scavenger Hunt Winners: September

This past September we kicked off our first BLOG scavenger hunt! The goal of the hunt was to increase the readership of our blogs by offering prizes for students who participated.  The theme of the September scavenger hunt was “teacher vacations”.

Each student who participated (140 total) received a ticket for our upcoming Reading Counts drawing.  In addition, the classroom that had the most participants (Mrs. McDonald’s 3rd grade) won and hour of teaching time with ME as their teacher.  Finally, all students who participated were entered into a blog drawing and one student was selected–winning a $10 gift card to Barnes and Noble and a pumpkin carving kit!  Congratulations, Ray!

We have just kicked off our second scavenger hunt, TEACHERS HAVE HOBBIES, TOO! To participate, read through the blogs and enter your finds in the survey answer form. Happy Hunting…and thank you for reading our blogs, too!
